It has been suggested that market structure will have an impact on within-industry differentials in efficiency, or cost disadvantages of small firms. To test this hypothesis, this paper examines the effects of market structure on the productivity (relative to industry productivity) of small manufacturing firms in Japan. The results show that market structure elements such as concentration and capital requirements work to the disadvantage of small-firm efficiency. The findings provide support for the hypothesis.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the, often strained, contractual relationships between banks and small firms in the UK. In the UK both the adequacy of the supply of debt finance to small firms (the so-called finance gap) and the contractual conditions attaching to it have frequently been seen as a major constraint on the development of the small firm sector. In this regard, the main UK clearing banks have been identified as the main culprits and have frequently been criticised for being too risk-averse, particularly in relation to the financial needs of rapidly growing small firms. Our analysis of the theoretical and empirical literatures suggests, however, that the perception of a finance gap and other contractual conflicts between banks and small firms can be more adequately explained in terms of the differences in the economic functions, relative risks, payoffs and, therefore, the economic interests of the suppliers of equity and debt finance.  相似文献

During the past quarter of a century, Asia has risen to become the world's factory. This trend has, however, coincided with the relative decline in value of manufacturing compared to other value adding activities, including R&D, design, and branding. This significant “value shift” has eroded the margins of manufacturing firms and sparked considerable interest among executives in Asia to design, brand, and market their own products. To date, though, this transition from being manufacturing oriented to becoming brand owners has largely only been accomplished by Japanese and Korean firms. In the rest of Asia—including in the rising giants of China and India—there are very few valuable brands. In fact, there is not a single Asian brand from a country other than Japan and Korea in Interbrand's 2008 valuation of the world's top 100 brands. Our article discusses, in depth, the challenges that Asian manufacturing firms encounter as they try to become “branders” and how these challenges can be overcome. Based on our collaboration spanning academia and consulting, we have been able to tap a wealth of information made available through research, case studies, and Interbrand's database of completed brand related assignments across Asia.  相似文献

Japan's per capita GDP growth has been decelerating for at least three decades, despite groping towards better ways of accommodating individualistic Smithian market forces. Japan has made great progress in opening markets and fostering profit seeking, yet it has not reaped the benefits anticipated so far. Facing the most severe economic downturn of the post-war period, it is now rethinking the fundaments of its economic and management system. The necessity of developing competitive advantages in new industries has been identified but a crucial question is how they will affect the way industry has organized itself to maximize quality, efficiency and flexibility. It is said that an entrepreneurial culture was not needed during the post-war period in Japan because a group-based industrial organization could generate about the same dynamism and outcome. Nevertheless, this time, a venture-type business culture may be a key factor in the renewal of the Japanese economy to put it back on a sustainable growth path. The objective of the article is to make a critical assessment of the trends in entrepreneurship in Japan, using secondary data. They are complemented by partial results of two surveys made by the author, the first one in 1997 in ten electronic companies on intrapreneurship schemes, and the second one in 1998 in 40 small companies in the Hiroshima prefecture, centred on human resource management. To these are added information obtained through interviews in the small business agency, MITI, and a number of universities on business-university research collaboration schemes.  相似文献

During the last two decades small firms in developing countries have received more and more attention from researchers and policy makers. For this, several reasons have been brought forward. The decline in labour absorption in agriculture and the slow growth of employment opportunities in the other sectors of the economy, combined with the fact that the growth of the labour force has accelerated, have led to un- and under-employment problems in many of these countries.Small firms are generally viewed as a useful means of alleviating these problems, because medium and large firms only would not help to solve the problems. However, from this study it can be concluded that the medium and large firms in the manufacturing sector in Indonesia are doing better in employment and income than generally anticipated. The purpose of this study is to examine the relative pattern of change and development of small firms in the manufacturing sector in Indonesia in the last two decades and possible factors affecting their growth. Also the relative importance of small firms in terms of income generation will be assessed. The study will use national data collected from the Department of Industry and Central Bureau of Statistic in Indonesia. Further, the study will be based, for its theoretical analysis, on relevant literature on the subject and on some empirical studies in Indonesia as well as in other developing countries.  相似文献

This paper examines the determinants of export behaviour for a panel of UK service industry firms from 1988 to 2001. Export behaviour is modelled in a dual manner: as both the decision to export and the intensity of exporting. The results indicate that firm size, research intensity, average director's pay and the variance of the sterling–dollar exchange rate all increase the probability of becoming an exporter. In addition, the results indicate that the process underlying a firm's decision to export is a separate one from that determining export intensity, implying that the two decisions should be modelled separately.  相似文献

The view that the productivity performance in UK manufacturing compares unfavourably with that in other European countries is ill-founded. The important conclusion from this analysis is that the fundamental problem in UK manufacturing has been the low level of investment. This would seem to provide the major part of the explanation for the „poor“ comparative performance of UK manufacturing when measured in terms of both labour productivity growth and output growth.

In this article, the authors argue that manufacturing experiences much of the turbulence and conflict imposed by the dynamic global marketplace through its relationship with marketing, because marketing is usually responsible for introducing changing competitive priorities and demand patterns to the organization. Through a survey of manufacturing and marketing managers within international firms, the authors develop a profile of manufacturing-marketing conflicts experienced in each of four international strategy environments: export, multidomestic, global, and transnational. As international strategies became more complex, firms made use of more techniques for coordinating between marketing and manufacturing, with more use of decentralized and informal approaches. Coordinating techniques included individual MBO-reward systems, joint task forces for problem-solving, and direct involvement of manufacturing and marketing in establishing the competitive priorities of the firm.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper investigates strategic and organisational context determinants of the sophistication of adopted sales force automation (SFA) systems in three UK industries: financial services, pharmaceuticals, and building/construction. Sophistication of adopted systems is associated with the organisation placing greater emphasis on information orientation, which is itself driven by an increased integration of IT and sales coupled with increased organisational slack. Increased integration of IT and sales is itself driven by increased strategic importance of sales coupled with increased use of internal communication networks. Importantly, a firm's marketing orientation, although also driven by the strategic importance of sales, has no impact on either information orientation or SFA sophistication. We discuss the implications of our findings to aid understanding of SFA implementation failure.  相似文献

This paper examines the role which small firms in East Germany have played under the system of combines and the important contribution they can make in the current reform process. The evolution of a striking trend towards the centralization of economic power in the GDR during the last three decades is documented. Not only has the share of economic activity accounted for by the combines greatly increased, but the number of establishments, and particularly small establishments, has drastically decreased. It is concluded that the establishment of a vital entrepreneurial sector is essential if East Germany is to succeed in its process of economic reform and the transition to the market economy.  相似文献

It is often claimed that, especially in mature industries, European firms can compete against low-cost NICs firms only if they are able to implement quality based strategies. The emphasis on the strategic role of quality, however, often leads to underestimate the extent of organizational and economic efforts, needed to turn quality from a potential opportunity into a real advantage. The lack of a thorough comprehension of the requirements of a quality based strategy can question the effectiveness of the investments some firms plan to improve their quality level. These firms can in fact remain stuck in the middle, if they do not have enough resources to turn quality into a source of sustainable competitive advantage. This paper is aimed at a better comprehension of both benefits and costs of a quality based strategy, with regard to a specific class of firms, Small Size Firms (SSFs), where a strategic use of quality is more difficult. The paper is articulated into two parts. Part one discusses the main obstacles facing the adoption of a quality based strategy by SSFs. A dynamic model for the adoption of this strategy over time, aimed at minimizing the risks for SSFs, is also presented.Part two describes the results of an empirical research, aimed at verifying the viability of quality based strategies in an industry composed only by SSFs, the shoe-machinery industry. The empirical research supports the viability of the model presented in the first part of the paper.  相似文献

Exporting raises productivity in sub-Saharan African manufacturing firms   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Proponents of trade liberalization argue that exporting helps firms to achieve higher productivity levels. This hypothesis is examined for a panel of manufacturing firms in nine African countries. The results indicate that exporters in these countries are more productive and, more importantly, exporters increase their productivity advantage after entry into the export market. While the first finding can be explained by selection-only the most productive firms engage in exporting-the latter cannot. The results are robust when unobserved productivity differences and self-selection into the export market are controlled for using different econometric methods. Scale economies are shown to be an important channel for the productivity advance. Credit constraints and contract enforcement problems prevent firms that only produce for the domestic market from fully exploiting scale economies.  相似文献

This paper examines the interactions between entry size, growth rate, and probability of survival of firm. Standard microeconomics states that firm growth stems from relative efficiency differentials and that growth positively affects the likelihood of survival. Therefore, the selection hypothesis is unable to explain how a wide number of small newly born firms can survive at length even without growth and how an even larger set of firms with a higher than average growth rate exits the market in the first few years after the foundation. It is shown that one way out of these apparent paradoxes is to relax the hypothesis of a one-to-one link between initial relative efficiency and survival, and then develop a model based on different entry modes and growth patterns of the newly born firms.  相似文献

Over the last decade the growth of service firms, and their internationalisation, has attracted considerable attention from researchers, with a special focus on characteristics that distinguish services from goods. However, as the composition of a firm's product can contain both good and service elements, this paper argues that it is somewhat misleading to categorise a product simply as either a ‘good’ or a ‘service’. Manufactured goods often contain client-related services embedded in them. Further, the nature of these embedded services may vary with respect to their degree of separability of production and consumption. Based on several case studies of Australian manufacturing subsidiaries in the UK, this paper examines the impact of inseparable embedded services on a firm's entry-mode choice. It reveals that the extent and nature of embedded services have a considerable impact on a firm's choice of foreign entry mode. The research findings are likely to contribute to the existing marketing and internationalisation literature.  相似文献

Change in the size distribution of UK firms   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper examines the extent of change and stability in the population of UK firms through time in terms of its size distribution, as defined by number of employees. It was empirically found that the distribution of employment by firm size remained surprisingly constant over the 1987–1989 period. A major implication of this finding is that in times of very high net job creation (involving high gross job creation and loss), factors are at work in the economy to keep the population distribution of firms (in terms of employment concentrations) more or less stable. It is hypothesised that a natural concentration exists for each different size band, and that as change takes place, the proportion of total employment based in the size band will tend towards this natural level. The rise in the proportion of employment in small firms, and the comparatively high job creation ability of small firms in recent times has come about in part because of negative rather than positive macro-economic influences. In recession, small firms in aggregate in spite of their individual volatility, are the most resilient. In prosperous times they do not increase their proportion of employment share, while in times of recession they do. Our results imply that large firms have a very significant, if not the most significant, bearing upon aggregate employment trends. On the other hand, small firms inherently have more potential to create jobs than large firms. The majority of public expenditure and legislative support for UK business is directed at large firms, as a result of culture and tradition. Even with the benefit of this support, large firms in recent decades have still performed badly, in job generation terms. In contrast, small firms have shown an inherent advantage in their ability to create jobs. A shift of government expenditure and legislative support from large to small firms would further enhance and realise the potential of small firms to benefit the economy and create jobs.  相似文献

Offshore production and skill upgrading by Japanese manufacturing firms   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
We investigate the influence of offshore production by Japanese multinationals on domestic skill intensity. Identifying relationships based on within variation in a panel of 1070 firms, we find that additional foreign affiliate employment in low-income countries raises skill intensity. The positive effect of FDI on domestic skill intensity, however, diminishes as investment shifts towards high-income countries. Increases in affiliate employment in low-income countries also raise a firm’s reliance on finished goods purchases, suggesting that overseas employment affects domestic skill intensity because imports of final goods from foreign affiliates displace domestic production.  相似文献

The pre-exiting productivity profile of mature firms relative to survivors is examined along with an evaluation of how productivity affects the probability of exit along various dimensions. An empirical approach, based on an unbalanced panel of Portuguese manufacturing firms covering a 10-year period, is used. The findings confirm that market selection forces low-productivity firms to exit, but there is also evidence that a sizeable portion of low-productivity firms do not shut down. Conversely, there is a non-negligible fraction of high-productivity firms that do actually close. Consistent with some key theoretical predictions, our analysis reveals that exiting firms have a falling productivity level over a number of years prior to exit. Finally, the results from the survival model show that both small firms and ones with low productivity are relatively much more likely to exit the market. Industry and macro-environment are also found to have a non-negligible role on the exit of mature firms.  相似文献

Drawing on traditional models of multinational expansion and organisational learning, Brouthers et al. (J Int Mark 17:21–38, 2009) prescribe that in some circumstances, small firms exporting from small countries should concentrate their exports into a single overseas market. These particular circumstances pertain to small Greek and Caribbean exporters in mature low-technology industries. This research extends this 2009 study to the same size group of small firms in another small country, New Zealand. Model estimation involved multiple regression methods on survey data from 249 small New Zealand exporters. Contrasting with Brouthers et al.’s advice, this study finds that small New Zealand exporters should not concentrate their exports into one or a few overseas markets. Success for these small firms stemmed from higher rates of R&D expenditure and multi-market exporting through company-owned channels in distant markets. These differences reflect the different environments and sample characteristics between the two studies. The paper contextualises further the evidence base on the strategies that small firm owner-managers should pursue and policy makers should promote.  相似文献

This article builds on the recently increasingly mentioned notion that entrepreneurship in the service sector is a worthwhile, but clearly underresearched topic. Using a sample of 1,612 small- and medium-size enterprises from the four German-speaking countries Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, and using structural equation modeling, this article finds that service firms have a significantly higher entrepreneurial orientation (EO) than manufacturing firms – both on the overall level as well as for each of the three sub-categories proactiveness, innovativeness, and risk-taking. With regards to the positive relationship between a firm's EO and its growth aspirations, nevertheless, no significant differences could be identified. Accordingly, this study shows that EO is a strategic orientation of highest value for service firms as well, under the premise of growth-orientation.  相似文献
