Summary As a test statistic for testing goodness-of-fit of a linear regression model, we propose a ratio of quadratic forms measuring the distance between parametric and nonparametric fits, relative to the estimated error variance. The test statistic is a modification of the statistic suggested by H?rdle and Mammen (1988). The asymptotic distribution under the hypothesis is established. The finite sample behaviour of the test is investigated in a Monte Carlo study, and is illustrated for two applications.  相似文献

This paper proposes a quantile regression estimator for a model with interactive effects potentially correlated with covariates. We provide conditions under which the estimator is asymptotically Gaussian and we investigate the finite sample performance of the method. An approach to testing the specification against a competing fixed effects specification is introduced. The paper presents an application to study the effect of class size and composition on educational attainment. The evidence suggests that while smaller classes are beneficial for low performers, larger classes are beneficial for high performers. The fixed effects specification is rejected in favor of the interactive effects specification.  相似文献

We propose a consistent test for a linear functional form against a nonparametric alternative in a fixed effects panel data model. We show that the test has a limiting standard normal distribution under the null hypothesis, and show that the test is a consistent test. We also establish the asymptotic validity of a bootstrap procedure which is used to better approximate the finite sample null distribution of the test statistic. Simulation results show that the proposed test performs well for panel data with a large number of cross-sectional units and a finite number of observations across time.  相似文献

The most popular econometric models in the panel data literature are the class of linear panel data models with unobserved individual- and/or time-specific effects. The consistency of parameter estimators and the validity of their economic interpretations as marginal effects depend crucially on the correct functional form specification of the linear panel data model. In this paper, a new class of residual-based tests is proposed for checking the validity of dynamic panel data models with both large cross-sectional units and time series dimensions. The individual and time effects can be fixed or random, and panel data can be balanced or unbalanced. The tests can detect a wide range of model misspecifications in the conditional mean of a dynamic panel data model, including functional form and lag misspecification. They check a large number of lags so that they can capture misspecification at any lag order asymptotically. No common alternative is assumed, thus allowing for heterogeneity in the degrees and directions of functional form misspecification across individuals. Thanks to the use of panel data with large N and T, the proposed nonparametric tests have an asymptotic normal distribution under the null hypothesis without requiring the smoothing parameters to grow with the sample sizes. This suggests better nonparametric asymptotic approximation for the panel data than for time series or cross sectional data. This is confirmed in a simulation study. We apply the new tests to test linear specification of cross-country growth equations and found significant nonlinearities in mean for OECD countries’ growth equation for annual and quintannual panel data.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a nonparametric kernel-based model specification test that can be used when the regression model contains both discrete and continuous regressors. We employ discrete variable kernel functions and we smooth both the discrete and continuous regressors using least squares cross-validation (CV) methods. The test statistic is shown to have an asymptotic normal null distribution. We also prove the validity of using the wild bootstrap method to approximate the null distribution of the test statistic, the bootstrap being our preferred method for obtaining the null distribution in practice. Simulations show that the proposed test has significant power advantages over conventional kernel tests which rely upon frequency-based nonparametric estimators that require sample splitting to handle the presence of discrete regressors.  相似文献

Unit root tests are constructed for dynamic panels whose component series are momentum threshold autoregressive processes. Gaussian null asymptotics are established for the proposed tests. A Monte–Carlo experiment is conducted to compare finite sample properties of the proposed tests. The tests are illustrated by a real data set.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for estimating the model Λ(Y)=min(β′X+U, C), where Y is a scalar, Λ is an unknown increasing function, X is a vector of explanatory variables, β is a vector of unknown parameters, U has unknown cumulative distribution function F, and C is a censoring threshold. It is not assumed that Λ and F belong to known parametric families; they are estimated nonparametrically. This model includes many widely used models as special cases, including the proportional hazards model with unobserved heterogeneity. The paper develops n1/2-consistent, asymptotically normal estimators of Λ and F. Estimators of β that are n1/2-consistent and asymptotically normal already exist. The results of Monte Carlo experiments illustrate the finite-sample behavior of the estimators.  相似文献

We develop methods for inference in nonparametric time-varying fixed effects panel data models that allow for locally stationary regressors and for the time series length T and cross-section size N both being large. We first develop a pooled nonparametric profile least squares dummy variable approach to estimate the nonparametric function, and establish the optimal convergence rate and asymptotic normality of the resultant estimator. We then propose a test statistic to check whether the bivariate nonparametric function is time-varying or the time effect is separable, and derive the asymptotic distribution of the proposed test statistic. We present several simulated examples and two real data analyses to illustrate the finite sample performance of the proposed methods.  相似文献

This paper presents a simple two-step estimator for a simultaneous equations model that contains an ordinal endogenous variable. The estimation rules are extensions of the Heckman (1978) estimators, also considered by Amemiya (1978). Asymptotic covariance matrices of the estimators also are derived. The estimator is applied to an economic model in which the statewide extent of teacher bargaining and teacherbargaining legislation are determined jointly.  相似文献
