We seek to reconcile the debate about the price effect of risk-neutral skewness (RNS) on stocks. We document positive predictability from short-term skewness, consistent with informed-trading demand, and negative predictability from long-term skewness, consistent with skewness preference. A term spread on RNS captures different information from long- and short-term contracts, resulting in stronger predictability. The quintile portfolio with the lowest spread outperforms that with highest spread by 14.64% annually. The term structure of RNS predicts earnings surprises and price crashes. We extract the slope factor from RNS term structure, estimate its risk premium, and explore its relation with several macroeconomic variables.  相似文献

This study explores the effect of investor sentiment on the volatility forecasting power of option-implied information. We find that the risk-neutral skewness has the explanatory power regarding future volatility only during high sentiment periods. Furthermore, the implied volatility has varying volatility forecasting ability depending on the level of investor sentiment. Our findings suggest that the effectiveness of volatility forecasting models based on option-implied information varies over time with the level of investor sentiment. We confirm the important role of investor sentiment in volatility forecasting models exploiting option-implied information with strong evidence from in-sample and out-of-sample analyses. We also present improvements in the accuracy of volatility forecasts from volatility forecasting models derived by incorporating investor sentiment in these models.  相似文献

Implied standard deviation is widely believed to be the best available forecast of the volatility of returns over the remaining contract life (Jorion, 1995 ). In this paper, we take this result two steps further to the higher moments of the distribution (skewness and kurtosis) based on a Gram–Charlier series expansion of the normal distribution (Corrado and Su, 1996 ) using long-term CAC 40 option prices contract, named PXL. First, we found that implied first moments contain a substantial amount of information for future moments of CAC 40 returns although this amount decreases with respect to the moment's order. Secondly, we found that the different shapes of the volatility smile are consistent with different distribution of the underlying returns. Based on these results, we also observed that including other implied moments significantly improves the out-of-sample pricing performance of the Black–Scholes, (1973) model.  相似文献

This study compares various approaches for incorporating the overnight information flow for forecasting realized volatility of the Australian index ASX 200 and seven very liquid Australian shares from March 2007 to January 2014. The analysis shows that considering overnight information separately rather than adding it to the daily realized volatility estimates leads consistently to better out-of-sample results despite the higher number of involved parameters. A novel, very promising approach is to combine the assets’ own overnight returns with realized volatility estimates of related assets from other markets for which intraday data is available while the Australian exchange is closed.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the role of the volatility risk premium for the forecasting performance of implied volatility. We introduce a non-parametric and parsimonious approach to adjust the model-free implied volatility for the volatility risk premium and implement this methodology using more than 20 years of options and futures data on three major energy markets. Using regression models and statistical loss functions, we find compelling evidence to suggest that the risk premium adjusted implied volatility significantly outperforms other models, including its unadjusted counterpart. Our main finding holds for different choices of volatility estimators and competing time-series models, underlying the robustness of our results.  相似文献

The Homoscedastic Gamma (HG) model characterizes the distribution of returns by its mean, variance and an independent skewness parameter. The HG model preserves the parsimony and the closed form of the Black–Scholes–Merton (BSM) while introducing the implied volatility (IV) and skewness surface. Varying the skewness parameter of the HG model can restore the symmetry of IV curves. Practitioner’s variants of the HG model improve pricing (in-sample and out-of-sample) and hedging performances relative to practitioners’ BSM models, with as many or less parameters. The pattern of improvements in Delta-Hedged gains across strike prices accord with predictions from the HG model. These results imply that expanding around the Gaussian density does not offer sufficient flexibility to match the skewness implicit in options. Consistent with the model, we also find that conditioning on implied skewness increases the predictive power of the volatility spread for excess returns.  相似文献

Credit default swaps (CDS) are similar to out-of-the-money put options in that both offer a low cost and effective protection against downside risk. This study investigates whether put option-implied volatility is an important determinant of CDS spreads. Using a large sample of firms with both CDS and options data, we find that individual firms’ put option-implied volatility dominates historical volatility in explaining the time-series variation in CDS spreads. To understand this result, we show that implied volatility is a more efficient forecast for future realized volatility than historical volatility. More importantly, the volatility risk premium embedded in option prices covaries with the CDS spread. These findings complement existing empirical evidence based on market-level data.  相似文献

We study the formation of derivative prices in an equilibrium between risk-neutral agents with heterogeneous beliefs about the dynamics of the underlying. Under the condition that short-selling is limited, we prove the existence of a unique equilibrium price and show that it incorporates the speculative value of possibly reselling the derivative. This value typically leads to a bubble; that is, the price exceeds the autonomous valuation of any given agent. Mathematically, the equilibrium price operator is of the same nonlinear form that is obtained in single-agent settings with worst-case aversion against model uncertainty. Thus, our equilibrium leads to a novel interpretation of this price.  相似文献

Using the theoretical link between put options and credit default swaps (CDS) in a very general setting, we develop a robust measure of CDS implied volatility (CIV) that captures the information content of CDS markets. Specifically, we use the unit recovery claim to bridge CDS and deep out-of-the-money put options of the same firm and then back out CIV via the binomial tree. Our CIV measure strongly co-moves with the option implied volatility (OIV), with a correlation coefficient of 0.8. Based on the standardized difference between CIV and OIV, we construct CDS and option trading strategies. Without taking transaction costs into account, the long–short CDS trading strategy achieves an annualized return of 58.29% and a Sharpe ratio of 2.97, which cannot be explained by non-parametric skewness and volatility risk.  相似文献

We use option prices to examine whether changes in stock return skewness and kurtosis preceding earnings announcements provide information about subsequent stock and option returns. We demonstrate that changes in jump risk premiums can lead to changes in implied skewness and kurtosis and are also associated with the mean and variability of the stock price response to the earnings announcement. We find that changes in both moments have strong predictive power for future stock returns, even after controlling for implied volatility. Additionally, changes in both moments predict call returns, while put return predictability is primarily linked to changes in skewness.  相似文献

Theoretical models that relate volatility to the quantity of information are extended to a multi-asset setting and it is deduced that stock returns may or may not have incremental information when modelling index volatility, depending on the sources of information that move stock prices. The first empirical study that can help resolve this theoretical uncertainty is presented. A detailed analysis of the daily volatility of the S&P 100 index from 1984 to 1998 shows there is some incremental volatility information in the returns from the 100 shares that define the index. This evidence is obtained from ARCH models that incorporate leverage effects, dummy variables for the 1987 crash and aggregate measures of stock return volatility. Significant differences between estimated volatilities are found for various stock measures and sub-periods.  相似文献

Does cross-sectional dispersion in the returns of different stocks help forecast volatility of the S&P 500 index? This paper develops a model of stock returns where dispersion in returns across different stocks is modeled jointly with aggregate volatility. Although specifications that allow for feedback from cross-sectional dispersion to aggregate volatility have a better fit in sample, they prove not to be robust for purposes of out-of-sample forecasting. Using a full cross-section of stock returns jointly, however, I find that use of cross-sectional dispersion can help improve parameter estimates of a GARCH process for aggregate volatility to generate better forecasts both in sample and out of sample. Given this evidence, I conclude that cross-sectional information helps predict market volatility indirectly rather than directly entering in the data-generating process.  相似文献

We test for the performance of a series of volatility forecasting models (GARCH 1,1; EGARCH 1,1; CGARCH) in the context of several indices from the two oldest cross-border exchanges (Euronext; OMX). Our findings overall indicate that the EGARCH (1,1) model outperforms the other two, both before and after the outbreak of the global financial crisis. Controlling for the presence of feedback traders, the accuracy of the EGARCH (1,1) model is not affected, something further confirmed for both the pre and post crisis periods. Overall, ARCH effects can be found in the Euronext and OMX indices, with our results further indicating the presence of significant positive feedback trading in several of our tests.  相似文献

The information content of option implied volatility and realized volatility under market imperfections are studied in the context of GARCH modeling and volatility forecasts of Taiwan stock market (TAIEX) returns. Consistent with most studies, we find that the Taiwan implied volatility index (TVIX) calculated from the TAIEX option prices contains most of the information, and that White's [White, H., 2000. A reality check for data snooping. Econometrica 68, 1097–1126] reality check test cannot reject the null hypothesis that the TVIX provides the best forecast. Possibly due to market imperfections, however, the incremental information content of realized volatility as well as daily returns cannot be ruled out. Finally, we also find that the information is found only in the most recent TVIX, indicating information is being efficiently impounded on the TAIEX option prices. This finding suggests that appropriately designed derivative products can alleviate the problems caused by market imperfections.  相似文献

The existing literature contains conflicting evidence regarding the relative quality of stock market volatility forecasts. Evidence can be found supporting the superiority of relatively complex models (including ARCH class models), while there is also evidence supporting the superiority of more simple alternatives. These inconsistencies are of particular concern because of the use of, and reliance on, volatility forecasts in key economic decision-making and analysis, and in asset/option pricing. This paper employs daily Australian data to examine this issue. The results suggest that the ARCH class of models and a simple regression model provide superior forecasts of volatility. However, the various model rankings are shown to be sensitive to the error statistic used to assess the accuracy of the forecasts. Nevertheless, a clear message is that volatility forecasting is a notoriously difficult task.  相似文献

This study examines the Chinese implied volatility index (iVIX) to determine whether jump information from the index is useful for volatility forecasting of the Shanghai Stock Exchange 50ETF. Specifically, we consider the jump sizes and intensities of the 50ETF and iVIX as well as cojumps. The findings show that both the jump size and intensity of the 50ETF can improve the forecasting accuracy of the 50ETF volatility. Moreover, we find that the jump size and intensity of the iVIX provide no significant predictive ability in any forecasting horizon. The cojump intensity of the 50ETF and iVIX is a powerful predictor for volatility forecasting of the 50ETF in all forecasting horizons, and the cojump size is helpful for forecasting in short forecasting horizon. In addition, for a one-day forecasting horizon, the iVIX jump size in the cojump is more predictive of future volatility than that of the 50ETF when simultaneous jumps occur. Our empirical results are robust and consistent. This work provides new insights into predicting asset volatility with greater accuracy.  相似文献

The paper examines the medium-term forecasting ability of several alternative models of currency volatility. The data period covers more than eight years of daily observations, January 1991 to March 1999, for the spot exchange rate, 1- and 3-month volatility of the DEM/JPY, GBP/DEM, GBP/USD, USD/CHF, USD/DEM and USD/JPY. Comparing with the results of ‘pure’ time series models, the reported work investigates whether market implied volatility data can add value in terms of medium-term forecasting accuracy. This is done using data directly available from the marketplace in order to avoid the potential biases arising from ‘backing out’ volatility from a specific option pricing model. On the basis of the over 34 000 out-of-sample forecasts produced, evidence tends to indicate that, although no single volatility model emerges as an overall winner in terms of forecasting accuracy, the ‘mixed’ models incorporating market data for currency volatility perform best most of the time.  相似文献
