The Black Sea economic cooperation zone

The political changes in eastern Europe have opened up new opportunities for trade among the countries surrounding the Black Sea, and especially between the former socialist countries and Turkey, the country with the longest Black Sea coastline. The following article describes the present stage of economic cooperation reached by the countries concerned and analyzes the prospects for the future.

A basis for economic cooperation in Europe

The UN-Economic Commission for Europe, to which today the large majority of the economically most advanced states in the world belong, has in the 21 years of its existence done work that cannot be gauged merely by tangible results. The Commission has played a vital part in creating the essential climatic conditions for the economic reconstruction of Europe after the war. During the dark days of the “cold war” it remained the only functioning forum for a dialogue between East and West. Its activities range from the regulation of cross-frontier traffic, to researches into long-term economic developments in Europe, to the promotion of East-West trade and even to questions of scientific and technological cooperation, and as such the ECE sets an example of economic coexistence. At the beginning of the third decade of its existence the Commission, firmly rooted as it is in a well-balanced mixture of idealism and realism, can look to the future with confidence. On the occasion of the 23rd meeting of the UN/ECE, which ended in Geneva on the second of May, we discussed with its chairman, Dr Treu, some of the main problems of economic cooperation between Eastern and Western Europe.

The potential obstacles to economic cooperation in the asia-pacific region

The purpose of this article is to examine the obstacles that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) needs to overcome in order to proceed from the envisioning-and-planning stage to the stage of implementation, and beyond. This article uses a computational general equilibrium model for analyzing the effects of APEC's regional coverage, China's World Trade Organization membership, and unilateral most favored nations extension. Overall, this article predicts that the potential obstacles associated with these issues will not hinder the formation of an APEC free-trade area.

East-West Trading Relationships:

The professional buyer in the USA may be influenced in his selection of products from a developing country by his perception of its state of political freedom. In addition to the standard economic issues such as price and quality, political freedom and other environmental conditions may play a minor but still significant part in buyer decision-making. This study examines the impact of political freedom in the exporting country on the willingness to buy of the professional buyer in the United States. By itself, political freedom is not a deciciding factor in whether or not to buy, but combined with other adverse environmental conditions it may very well be an important determinant in the professional buying decision.
