Estimating intergenerational schooling mobility on censored samples: consequences and remedies

In this paper we estimate the impact of parental schooling on child schooling, focus on the problem that children who are still in school constitute censored observations, and evaluate three solutions to it: replacement of observed with expected years of schooling, maximum likelihood approach, and elimination of all school‐aged children. Using intergenerational data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study we test how the three correction methods deal with censored observations. The one that treats parental expectations as if they were realizations seems to fix the censoring problem quite well. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

通信设备中接地问题的研究与分析

接地是提高电子通信设备电磁兼容性的有效的重要手段之一。正确的接地既能抑制外部电磁干扰的影响,又能防止电子通信设备向外部发射电磁波;而错误的接地常常会引入非常严重的干扰,甚至会使电子通信设备无法正常工作。理想的"地"必须是一个零电位、零阻抗的理想导体,其上备点之间不应存在电位差,它可以在系统中作为所有电平的参考点,接地的目的有两个:一是为了安全,称为保护接地;二是为信号电压或系统电压提供一个稳定的零电位参考点,称为信号地或系统地。

Information distortion and competitive remedies in government transfer programs: The case of ethanol

This paper reconsiders the analogy between competitive markets and the political process that is central to much of the literature on the efficiency of government transfers. The key problem is that property rights in politics are much less well defined than they are in competitive markets. As the paper outlines, obtaining accurate information about the benefits and costs of transfers is likely to be much more difficult than envisioned in the literature. Investigators, as well as general voters, often must rely on the government and competing parties for provision of information about underlying program parameters and functional relationships. We argue that politicians and the affected interest groups have incentives to limit and distort the information that is released to voters and that political competition is unlikely to be an effective counter. In developing the argument, a theoretical framework is provided and applied in a case study of the ethanol transfer. The documented efforts to disguise the actual costs and benefits of the program are important for gaining a broader understanding of the functioning and costs of government transfers in the economy.

Foreign remedies for local difficulties: the case of three Scottish manufacturing firms

Literature on Japanese transplant manufacturing firms in the automotive sector often emphasise the importance placed on attitude as opposed to skills in the hiring decisions for line workers. In this paper, a case study of one second-tier components supplier for a major Japanese automotive assembler in the Midwestern United States provides the opinions of senior managers and human resource associates regarding recruitment and selection practices. In-depth interviews, carried out over a two-week period in August 2000, are used to develop an understanding of the recruitment and selection process for line workers as well as to investigate the desired skills and value of previous Japanese experience. Results of the case study analysis are compared with two models from the literature: (1) a model of recruitment and selection at Japanese automotive-related firms in Japan and (2) a model of recruitment and selection at Japanese transplant automotive-related firms abroad. Deviations from the two models point not to a new paradigm of ‘second-generation’ Japanese transplants – those that have moved into regions quite familiar with Japanese firms and related management and production methods – but rather to overall weaknesses in the stereotypical models. Managerial opinions within the case study firm place limited value on familiarity with a Japanese environment, considering such experience secondary to attitudes and work ethics that are in line with the philosophy of the case study firm.

基于内容分析的品牌微博沟通研究

微博为品牌和消费者之间提供了对话式沟通的机会,不少企业也已经注意到了利用微博进行品牌沟通的重要性。然而,当前的实践活动尚缺乏系统的理论指导,相关的实证研究更是付之阙如。文章基于对28家品牌微博的沟通内容进行了取样分析,实证研究了不同类型微博内容的影响力差异,并进一步比较了不同类型品牌的内容倾向。研究发现:品牌微博的内容分为关系构建型、行为引导型和信息提供型三类,且行为引导型的内容最多;不同行业的品牌微博存在明显的内容发布偏好;行为引导型微博最容易获得更高的转发和评论机会,关系构建型次之,信息提供型最低。
