This paper extends the APT to an international setting. Specifying a linear factor return-generating model in local currency terms, we show that the usual risk-diversification rule in the APT does not yield a riskless portfolio unless currency fluctuations obey the same factor model as asset returns. We then consider an arbitrage portfolio whose exchange risk is hedged by foreign riskless bonds. Under the resulting no-arbitrage conditions, the expected returns are not on the same hyperplane, unlike the closed-economy APT, unless they are adjusted by the cost of exchange risk hedging.  相似文献

The APT is represented as a multivariate regression model with across-equations restrictions. Both observed and unobserved (latent) macroeconomic factors are included, thus generalizing and unifying two previous strands of literature. Large portfolios representing unobserved factors are treated as endogenous, and nonlinear 3SLS estimates are shown to differ sharply from estimates that ignore this endogeneity. Using monthly stock returns and six factors, we cannot reject January effects. The following results are invariant with respect to the inclusion of January effects: we reject the CAPM in favor of the APT; however, we cannot reject the APT restrictions on the linear factor model.  相似文献

This paper developes a semiautoregression (SAR) approach to estimate factors of the arbitrage pricing theory (APT) that has the advantage of providing a simple asymptotic variance-covariance matrix for the factor estimates, which makes it easy to adjust for measurement errors. Using the extracted factors, I confirm the finding that the APT describes asset returns slightly better than the CAPM, although there is still some mispricing in the APT model. I find that not only are the factors “priced” by the market, but the factor premiums move over time in relation to business cycle variables.  相似文献

Just when the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) has become accepted by public utility regulators as a method for estimating a utility's screening rate, academic criticism of the model's theoretical and empirical shortcomings has led to empirical testing of the alternative arbitrage pricing theory (APT). This paper expands on recent APT-CAPM performance comparisons by simulating returns of public utility stocks using versions of both models, as was done by Bower, Bower, and Logue in a 1984 paper. In addition, the models are used for ex-post forecasting of returns in a subsequent time period. The Litzenberger-Ramaswamy method is used to correct for errors-in-variables in the CAPM cross-sectional equation. This allows for estimating the security market line using firm betas. The same methodology is used in the APT stages. Three different criteria—the Theil inequality, the sources of mean square error, and Chen's estimated weights of expected return-are used to compare CAPM and APT simulation and forecasting of the equity screening rates. Tested on a sample of 128 public utility companies, results show that neither model is clearly dominant. There is a tendency for reversal of performance. The model that is superior for simulating returns tends to be inferior for forecasting them, and vice-versa.  相似文献

This paper investigates nonlinear pricing kernels in which the risk factor is endogenously determined and preferences restrict the definition of the pricing kernel. These kernels potentially generate the empirical performance of nonlinear and multifactor models, while maintaining empirical power and avoiding ad hoc specifications of factors or functional form. Our test results indicate that preference-restricted nonlinear pricing kernels are both admissible for the cross section of returns and are able to significantly improve upon linear single- and multifactor kernels. Further, the nonlinearities in the pricing kernel drive out the importance of the factors in the linear multi-factor model.  相似文献

Empirical tests are reported for Ross' arbitrage pricing theory using monthly data for U.S. Treasury securities during the 1960–1979 period. We find that mean returns on bond portfolios are linearly related to at least two factor loadings. Multivariate test results, however, are not consistent with the APT. Our sample data in the U.S. Treasury securities market are also not consistent with either version of the CAPM. One-month-ahead forecasts of excess returns using factor-generating models are compared with corresponding naive predictions or predictions using the “market model” with various market portfolios.  相似文献

We examine the cross-sectional pricing equation of the APT using the elements of eigenvectors and the maximum likelihood factor loadings of the covariance matrix of returns as measures of risk. The results indicate that, for data assumed stationary over twenty years, the first vector is a surprisingly good measure of risk when compared with either a one- or a five-factor model or a five-vector model. We conclude that in some circumstances principal components analysis may be preferred to factor analysis.  相似文献

Prior theoretical derivations of the Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT) bound an aggregate measure of the deviation of mean asset returns from that predicted by a linear pricing equation. It is conceivable, given this bound, that some assets might be badly mispriced by the model. In this paper, a more intuitive derivation of the factor pricing equation is presented which describes the deviation on an asset by asset basis. The deviation is shown to be small for assets in a realistic finite economy and is arbitrarily close to zero for those assets with arbitrarily small size relative to aggregate wealth. It follows that the linear pricing equation provides a good approximation for the mean returns of all traded assets.  相似文献

This paper uses a nonlinear arbitrage-pricing model, a conditional linear model, and an unconditional linear model to price international equities, bonds, and forward currency contracts. Unlike linear models, the nonlinear arbitrage-pricing model requires no restrictions on the payoff space, allowing it to price payoffs of options, forward contracts, and other derivative securities. Only the nonlinear arbitrage-pricing model does an adequate job of explaining the time series behavior of a cross section of international returns.  相似文献

In a single-period model with options on the market portfolio, linear factor pricing holds if and only if the variance of the market conditional on the factors is zero. There is no need for factors other than nonlinear functions of the market. For accurate linear pricing of all payoff patterns the factors must be rotationally equivalent to Hakansson's “supershares.” In a multiperiod model, a similar set of results holds, but with consumption replacing the market payoff. The methodology of the empirical Arbitrage Pricing Theory literature is not consistent with either the single-period model or the multiperiod model.  相似文献

This paper provides a simple proof of a recent theorem presented by Reisman (1992) , concerning the use of proxies for the factors in the return-generating process of the arbitrage pricing theory (APT). In the single-factor case, the theorem asserts that any variable correlated with the factor can serve as the benchmark in an approximate APT expected return relation. The significance of this result is considered and a new direction for empirical work on “arbitrage pricing” is outlined.  相似文献

A test for the arbitrage pricing theory which employs a multivariate linear regression model is developed. Given a sample of return premiums for a set of N assets which includes a subset of k linearly independent portfolios, the k factor APT hypothesis is accepted if the intercept term is zero in the multivariate regression of the ( N ? k ) returns on the k portfolios. The test may be carried out simply, by using univariate multiple regression software. The relation of this test to the concept of performance potential and Sharpe's measure of performance is also discussed. If the performance potential of the k portfolios is not significantly less than the performance potential of the complete set of N assets, then the k factor APT hypothesis is accepted.  相似文献

The Arbitrage Pricing Theory is extended to a setting where investors possess information about future asset returns. A no-arbitrage pricing restriction is obtained with arbitrage conditioned on an investor's information. The pricing restriction contains unconditional factor loadings and either conditional or unconditional expected returns. Thus, tests of the theory can be based solely on time-series estimates of unconditional moments. Additional tests based on conditional expected returns are also appropriate.  相似文献

We estimate the parameters of Ross's Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT). Using daily return data during the 1963–78 period, we compare the evidence on the APT and the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) as implemented by market indices and find that the APT performs well. The theory is further supported in that estimated expected returns depend on estimated factor loadings, and variables such as own variance and firm size do not contribute additional explanatory power to that of the factor loadings.  相似文献

In this paper, we test the arbitrage pricing theory (APT) in an international setting. Inter-battery factor analysis is used to estimate the international common factors and the Chow test is used in testing the validity of the APT. Our inter-battery factor analysis results show that the number of common factors between a pair of countries ranges from one to five, and our cross-sectional test results lead us to reject the joint hypothesis that the international capital market is integrated and that the APT is internationally valid. Our results, however, do not rule out the possibility that the APT holds locally or regionally in segmented capital markets. Finally, the basic results of both the inter-battery factor analysis and the cross-sectional tests are largely invariant to the numeraire currency chosen.  相似文献

Multifactor Explanations of Asset Pricing Anomalies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Previous work shows that average returns on common stocks are related to firm characteristics like size, earnings/price, cash flow/price, book-to-market equity, past sales growth, long-term past return, and short-term past return. Because these patterns in average returns apparently are not explained by the CAPM, they are called anomalies. We find that, except for the continuation of short-term returns, the anomalies largely disappear in a three-factor model. Our results are consistent with rational ICAPM or APT asset pricing, but we also consider irrational pricing and data problems as possible explanations.  相似文献

This paper presents some new evidence that Arbitrage Pricing Theory may lead to different and better estimates of expected return than the Capital Asset Pricing Model, particularly in the case of utility stock returns. Results for monthly portfolio returns for 1971–1979 lead to the conclusion that regulators should not adopt the single-factor risk approach of the CAPM as the principal measure of risk, but give greater weight to APT, whose multiple factors provide a better indication of asset risk and a better estimate of expected return.  相似文献

This study examines the performance of three asset pricing models: the CAPM, the APT and the UAPT using observed expected returns from a three-phase dividend discount model with Value Line analyst estimates of future company-level earnings, dividends and growth rates. Our study is the first we know of to test the three major asset pricing models using observed expected returns. Our results are similar to prior research using ex post (realized) returns in that we find that the UAPT using macroeconomic factors is the best performing model, followed by the APT and the CAPM. However, our results also suggest that the importance of macroeconomic factors is much greater to expected returns than to realized returns, and the corresponding R2 values for models using expected returns are much higher than for models using realized returns. Combining our results for the UAPT with those of Marston and Harris (1993) for the CAPM suggests that these models are more successful in tests using observed expected returns than in tests using realized returns as proxies for expected returns. Unit root tests suggest that monthly observed expected returns follow the classic random walk without drift model while monthly realized returns do not.  相似文献

We present an improved methodology to estimate the underlying structure of systematic risk in the Mexican Stock Exchange with the use of Principal Component Analysis and Factor Analysis. We consider the estimation of risk factors in an Arbitrage Pricing Theory (APT) framework under a statistical approach, where the systematic risk factors are extracted directly from the observed returns on equities, and there are two differentiated stages, namely, the risk extraction and the risk attribution processes. Our empirical study focuses only on the former; it includes the testing of our models in two versions: returns and returns in excess of the riskless interest rate for weekly and daily databases, and a two-stage methodology for the econometric contrast. First, we extract the underlying systematic risk factors by way of both, the standard linear version of the Principal Component Analysis and the Maximum Likelihood Factor Analysis estimation. Then, we estimate simultaneously, for all the system of equations, the sensitivities to the systematic risk factors (betas) by weighted least squares. Finally, we test the pricing model with the use of an average cross-section methodology via ordinary least squares, corrected by heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent covariances estimation. Our results show that although APT is very sensitive to the extraction technique utilized and to the number of components or factors retained, the evidence found partially supports the APT according to the methodology presented and the sample studied.  相似文献

This paper investigates the month-by-month stability of (a) daily returns and correlation coefficients of stock returns, (b) correlation and covariance matrices, (c) number of return-generating factors, and (d) the APT pricing relationship. The results show that there is a January effect and a small-firm effect in stock returns. Correlation matrices are more stable than covariance matrices, but both types of matrices are not stable across months and across the sample groups. The number of return-generating factors is rather stable most of the time and for most of the sample groups, but there is some significant instability that is related to the average correlation coefficients among stocks. The APT pricing relationship does not seem to be supported by the two-stage process using the maximum-likelihood factor analysis.  相似文献
