The demand for innovative and cost-effective products has had considerable impact on the Research and Development (R&D) portfolio of pharmaceutical companies. With the advent of the new enabling technologies, the biotechnology revolution has created a need for a new and more appropriate paradigm for drug development. The progress in the biological understanding of disease processes and related technological developments have been a major step forward for drug discovery. However, the great majority of the biotechnology companies are confronted with the same issues as major pharmaceutical companies in terms of R&D productivity. This article intends to unfold the challenges faced by biotechnology companies involved in drug discovery by managing the complexity, uncertainty and urgency of technology integration through organic, acquisition and partnering strategies have become priorities for biotechnology companies in helping them achieving more efficiency in their pharmaceutical R&D efforts. Such strategies help biotechnology companies apply their technologies across a broad range of applications within the drug discovery value chain to maximize opportunities for product development. Competitive advantage in the marketplace ultimately derives from providing better speed, cost, quality and direction.  相似文献

In recent years, England and Wales have suffered droughts. This unusual situation defies the common belief that the British climate provides abundant water resources and has prompted the regulatory authorities to impose bans on superfluous uses of water. Furthermore, a large percentage of households in England consume unmetered water which is detrimental to water saving efforts. Given this context, we estimate the shadow price of water using a panel data from reports published by the Office of Water Services (Ofwat) for the period 1996 to 2010 (three regulatory periods). These shadow prices are derived from a parametric multi-output, multi-input, input distance function characterized by a translog technology. Following O'Donnell and Coelli (2005), we use a Bayesian econometric framework in order to impose regularity—monotonicity and curvature—conditions on a high-flexible technology. Consequently, our results can be interpreted at the firm level without requiring the need to base analysis on the averages. Our estimations offer guidance for regulation purposes and provide an assessment of how the water supply companies deal with water losses under each regulatory period. The relevance of the study is quite general as water scarcity is a problem that will become more important with population growth and the impact of climate change.  相似文献

The goal of this paper is to explain the commitment behaviour of highly skilled professionals in Canadian business-to-business (B2B) technology services companies that do not have a formal and explicit managerial commitment strategy and to emphasize the need to take the organizational context into consideration when developing a theory that seeks to account for differences in employee's organizational commitment. Our contribution is to reappraise the relevance of the traditional organizational commitment definition in this organizational context, a new organizational form. We demonstrate that in the companies which are different from the traditional bureaucratic organizational forms and which employ highly qualified professionals, the employment relationship is based on a psychological contract that is not accounted for in the strategic HRM theory.

Indeed, the basic principles of strategic HRM dictate that an organization's most valuable asset is its employees; it is therefore incumbent on management to do whatever is necessary to retain its workforce, readily described as a key resource, and to use human resources management (HRM) practices as tools to elicit commitment. In a study of highly skilled workers in Canadian business-to-business (B2B) technology services companies belonging to the so-called ‘new economy’, we observed that although the competitive advantage enjoyed by these companies depends to a large degree on the creativity and innovativeness of their workforce, these companies barely have any official HRM policies, and the HR department plays a very unobtrusive role. Yet, no one could say that the employees in these firms are not committed – on the contrary! This situation has several implications in terms of career for these professionals, in terms of HR practices for the employers.

Nevertheless, until now, existing theoretical models of organizational commitment have shown little interest in highly skilled workers in general and even less in new economy professionals.  相似文献

企业代理问题在市场化改革不断深入的今天已成为中国公司亟待解决的发展障碍。本文结合2474家主板上市公司和379家创业板上市公司治理结构以及高管激励机制对于企业绩效的实际影响,通过构建动态博弈模型和回归模型,发现以薪酬和股票期权形式的高管激励的正相关性随着高管股权稀释程度的上升而减小。本文还研究发现,与理论预测不同,独立董事占比与企业绩效有着负相关性,反映出我国的独立董事制度还不够完善。另外,笔者创新地对比了两板公司由于公司规模、GDP等因素对激励体系产生的不同反应,发现处于起步阶段的创业板公司绩效同高管激励机制和公司内控体系并没有主板公司那样明显的相关性。  相似文献

Companies now recognise the need to identify and address the concerns of their stakeholders to ensure their decisions and business activities are more socially acceptable. However, despite stakeholder participation being widely accepted in the public sector and used to a limited extent within some business management processes, there is no accepted understanding of what stakeholder participation actually constitutes and certainly no systematic method for its application within companies and company decision‐making. In order to support the development of such a method, stakeholder participation must first be defined in the ‘company’ context. Drawing from previous typologies of participation outlined in the literature, particularly relating to the public sector, this paper proposes a typology of stakeholder participation for companies, with particular relevance to environmental issues. It also outlines the needs and problems associated with developing a method of stakeholder participation for use in company decision‐making. It is essential for companies that offered products meet consumer preferences to ensure the corporate performance in the long term. Besides Conjoint Approaches, Self-Explicated-Approaches are the most common approaches to determine consumer preferences. Surprisingly, despite the relevance of Self-Explicated-Approaches existing research has mainly focused on decompositional preference measurement approaches. The article provides an overview of all existing Self-Explicated-Approaches and shows that only a few have been implemented so far and identifies most promising new Self-Explicated-Approaches for future research. Besides an evaluation of Self-Explicated-Approaches based on accuracy criteria we also take application-oriented criteria into account in order to illustrate most appropriate Self-Explicated-Approaches for business applications.  相似文献

Corporate ‘greening’, i.e. the process by which companies can become more environmentally responsible in their operations, has attracted considerable interest lately. Largely born out of hands-on consultancy experience, various models have been proposed which describe a series of ‘stages’ by which companies become progressively more environmentally conscious and reduce their impact on the natural environment. The present article critically analyses some of these ‘stage’ models of corporate ‘greening’ from both an empirical and a management theoretical point of view. The empirical analysis is based on four case studies of the ‘greening’ efforts of companies in the UK water and electricity industries. Environmental strategy and management in these companies is found to fit poorly into the stage models of corporate ‘greening’. The article concludes that more comprehensive and interpretative explanations of organizational ‘greening’ are needed, including contextual and process oriented analysis. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and ERP Environment.  相似文献

As we move into the 21st century, innovation, sustained innovation, has become a critical determinant of organizational success and survival. Although we know much about potential influences on innovation, little is known about the actions that should be taken to develop the people who must lead these efforts. In the present paper, we present a model of the capacities and capabilities people need to lead creative efforts. A selection, optimization, and compensation model is used to specify the kind of interventions that might provide a basis for developing these capacities and capabilities. The implications of these observations are discussed with respect to both the relevance of available leadership development techniques and the unique needs of people asked to lead creative efforts.  相似文献

家族企业已成为中国经济发展的重要力量。但学术界对其代际继承和权杖交接问题的研究却严重滞后,这不仅对家族企业经营和管理产生不良影响,而且对我国经济转型和产业结构调整等宏观经济调控造成一定的阻碍。对387家家族控制上市公司的实证分析结果显示:家族实际控制人对上市公司的控制方式对公司盈利能力和业绩有负相关关系。家族实际控制人出任公司重要管理岗位与公司盈利能力有正相关的关系。  相似文献
