The stakeholder approach offers the opportunity to consider corporate responsibility in a wider sense than that afforded by the stockholder or shareholder approaches. Having said that, this article aims to show that this theory does not offer a normative corporate responsibility concept that can be our response to two basic questions. On the one hand, for what is the company morally responsible and, on the other hand, why is the corporation morally responsible in terms of conventional and post-conventional perspectives? The reason why the stakeholder approach does not offer such a definition, as we shall see, is because the normative stakeholder approaches tend to confuse the social validity with the moral validity or legitimacy. It leads us to a conventional definition of corporate moral responsibility (CMR) that is not relevant to the pluralistic and global framework of our societies and economies. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate this intuition. 相似文献

The purpose of this article is to transcend the assumption that stakeholder engagement is necessarily a responsible practice.
Stakeholder engagement is traditionally seen as corporate responsibility in action. Indeed, in some literatures there exists
an assumption that the more an organisation engages with its stakeholders, the more it is responsible. This simple ‹more is
better’ view of stakeholder engagement belies the true complexity of the relationship between engagement and corporate responsibility.
Stakeholder engagement may be understood in a variety of different ways and from a variety of different theoretical perspectives.
Stakeholder engagement may or may not involve a moral dimension and, hence, is primarily a morally neutral practice. It is
therefore argued that stakeholder engagement must be seen as separate from, but related to, corporate responsibility. A model
that reflects the multifaceted relationship between the two constructs is proposed. This model not only allows the coincidence
of stakeholder engagement with corporate responsibility, but also allows for the development of the notion of corporate irresponsibility.

Corporate Social Responsibility: Exploring Stakeholder Relationships and Programme Reporting across Leading FTSE Companies 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Although it is now widely recognised by business leaders that their companies need to accept a broader responsibility than
short-term profits, recent research suggests that as corporate social responsibility (CSR) and social reporting become more
widespread, there is little empirical evidence of the range of stakeholders addressed through their CSR programmes and how
such programmes are reported. Through a CSR framework which was developed in an exploratory study, we explore the nature of
stakeholder relationships reported across leading FTSE companies and the importance they attach to communicating both social
and business outcomes. It is evident from the hypotheses tested that the bigger FTSE companies, particularly extraction companies
and telecoms, are more adept at identifying and prioritising their stakeholders, and linking CSR programmes to business and
social outcomes. However, we draw the general conclusion that building stronger stakeholder relationships through CSR programmes
– other than with customers – is not currently a priority for most companies. We also conclude that a limited sophistication
in managing multiple stakeholders may compromise the impact of CSR upon business and social results. Finally, the managerial
implications and the contribution of our study are discussed before closing with an acknowledgement of the limitations of
this work and suggestions for further research. 相似文献

Gender Mainstreaming and Corporate Social Responsibility: Reporting Workplace Issues 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper investigates the potential and actual contribution of corporate social responsibility (CSR) to gender equality
in a framework of gender mainstreaming (GM). It introduces GM as combining technical systems (monitoring, reporting, evaluating)
with political processes (women’s participation in decision-making) and considers the ways in which this is compatible with
CSR agendas. It examines the inclusion of gender equality criteria within three related CSR tools: human capital management
(HCM) reporting, CSR reporting guidelines, and socially responsible investment (SRI) criteria on employee and diversity issues.
Although evidence is found of gender equality information being requested within several CSR related reporting frameworks,
these requirements are mostly limited in scope, or remain optional elements. The nature and extent of relevant stakeholder
opportunities are investigated to explain this unfulfilled potential. 相似文献

This article presents an empirical investigation into the corporate social reporting practices of listed companies from Bangladesh, where corporate social reporting is a matter of voluntary disclosure. Analysis of annual reports published in 2007 reveals that only 15.45% of listed companies made such disclosures. This article presents an extensive survey of the contents, form, nature, and extent of corporate social reporting practices of listed companies. Analysis over a wide range of industries reveals that companies in the banking sector secure the highest rank in terms of corporate social reporting; three fourths of all disclosures are generalized qualitative statements without any attempt at attestation; more than one half of the disclosures are located in the director's report; and the mean amount of disclosures was less than half a page. 相似文献

This study explored several proposed relationships among professional ethical standards, corporate social responsibility,
and the perceived role of ethics and social responsibility. Data were collected from 313 business managers registered with
a large professional research association with a mailed self-report questionnaire. Mediated regression analysis indicated
that perceptions of corporate social responsibility partially mediated the positive relationship between perceived professional
ethical standards and the believed importance of ethics and social responsibility. Perceptions of corporate social responsibility
also fully mediated the negative relationship between perceived professional ethical standards and the subordination of ethics
and social responsibility. The results suggested that professions should develop ethical standards to encourage social responsibility,
since these actions are associated with enhanced employee ethical attitudes.

Companies offer ethics codes and training to increase employees’ ethical conduct. These programs can also enhance individual
work attitudes because ethical organizations are typically valued. Socially responsible companies are likely viewed as ethical
organizations and should therefore prompt similar employee job responses. Using survey information collected from 313 business
professionals, this exploratory study proposed that perceived corporate social responsibility would mediate the positive relationships
between ethics codes/training and job satisfaction. Results indicated that corporate social responsibility fully or partially
mediated the positive associations between four ethics program variables and individual job satisfaction, suggesting that
companies might better manage employees’ ethical perceptions and work attitudes with multiple policies, an approach endorsed
in the ethics literature.

The Communication of Corporate Social Responsibility: United States and European Union Multinational Corporations 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study explores corporate social responsibility (CSR) by conducting a cross-cultural analysis of communication of CSR
activities in a total of 16 U.S. and European corporations. Drawing on previous research contrasting two major approaches
to CSR initiatives, it was proposed that U.S. companies would tend to communicate about and justify CSR using economic or
bottom-line terms and arguments whereas European companies would rely more heavily on language or theories of citizenship,
corporate accountability, or moral commitment. Results supported this expectation of difference, with some modification. Specifically,
results indicated that EU companies do not value sustainability to the exclusion of financial elements, but instead project
sustainability commitments in addition to financial commitments. Further, U.S.-based companies focused more heavily on financial
justifications whereas EU-based companies incorporated both financial and sustainability elements in justifying their CSR activities. In addition, wide variance was found in both the
prevalence and use of specific CSR-related terminology. Cross-cultural distinctions in this use create implications with regard
to measurability and evidence of both strategic and bottom-line impact. Directions for further research are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop an ethical framework for the marketing of corporate social responsibility. Methods The approach is a conceptual one based on virtue ethics and on the corporate identity literature. Furthermore, empirical
research results are used to describe the opportunities and pitfalls of using marketing communication tools in the strategy
of building a virtuous corporate brand. Results/conclusions An ethical framework that addresses the paradoxical relation between the consequentialist perspective many proponents of
the marketing of CSR adopt, and ethical perspectives which criticize an exclusive profit-oriented approach to CSR. Furthermore,
three CSR strategies in relation to the marketing of CSR are discussed. For each CSR strategy it is explored how a corporation
could avoid falling into the promise/performance gap. 相似文献

The pharmaceutical sector, an industry already facing stiff challenges in the form of intensified competition and strategic
consolidation, has increasingly become subject to a range of pressures. Crucially, in common with other large-scale businesses,
pharmaceutical firms find themselves ‹invited’ to respond positively to the corporate ‹social’ responsibility (CSR) expectations
of their stakeholders. Consequently, individual managers will almost certainly be obliged to engage in some form of stakeholder
dialogue and this, in turn, means that they will have to make difficult choices about which practices to adopt. This real-world
management predicament runs parallel to an academic interest in CSR stakeholder dialogue theory and models. Accordingly, the
approach of this paper is to focus primarily on the academic debate surrounding stakeholder dialogue, by reviewing past attempts
to research and theorise the subject, by identifying gaps and weaknesses in the literature, and by proposing a new analytical
model. The central aim of the proposed new model is to offer a unified, structured, systematic, and comprehensive approach
to CSR decision making whilst simultaneously providing a practical framework for CSR executives who face the challenge of
responding in an effective manner to stakeholders. The model outlined here is currently being employed to conduct international
comparative empirical research into stakeholder dialogue practices amongst UK and German pharmaceutical firms. In the longer
term the intention is to use the model to undertake international comparative research encompassing a broader range of countries
and industries. 相似文献

This research examines the possibility of developing a new corporate social responsibility (CSR) auditing system based on
the analysis of current CSR literature and interviews conducted with a number of interested and knowledgeable stakeholders.
This work attempts to create a framework for social responsibility auditing compatible with an existing commercially successful
environmental audit system. The project is unusual in that it tackles the complex issue of CSR auditing with a scientific
approach using Grounded Theory. On the evidence discovered to date in the literature review and the interviews, CSR seems
to be perceived by many as the social strand of sustainable development. However, there is far less agreement regarding its
measurement. Both the literature review and the interview analysis indicate that developing an applied CSR auditing procedure
will be a challenging task. This is principally due to the lack of formal study of this complex subject, which, despite the
widespread debate it has engendered, still lacks a single and broadly accepted definition. The concepts developed from the
findings of this research, together with the key factors identified in a literature review of CSR, were developed into a prospective
CSR audit protocol. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to analyze the attitudes of Brazilian managers toward Corporate Social Responsibility, defined as their willingness to simultaneously meet the economic, legal, and ethical commitments that bind business companies to society. A Managers' Social Commitment Index (SCI) is proposed and a new scale is presented and confirmed as a reliable research instrument in a field study involving 252 Brazilian business managers. Results revealed that managers prioritize economic commitment, even though as they get older and more experienced they tend to sacrifice this commitment to comply with the law. Women showed greater willingness to integrate ethical interests in management decision making, revealing a higher degree of social commitment. 相似文献

This article focuses on the changing nature of market competition and on responsible business conduct on the global stage. The article explores the concept of creative capitalism and seeks to address whether or not corporate social responsibility (CSR) is better realized under creative capitalism. This study is conceptual in nature. While it identifies the forces that facilitate and sustain creative capitalism and strengthen executives' commitment to CSR, it proposes a model that can enhance the possibility of a thriving CSR under creative capitalism. The article advocates that under creative capitalism it is more likely to easily channel executives' passion into broad and purposefully driven endeavors; thereby strengthening executives' capacity for understanding how CSR creates value both for their organizations and for society. 相似文献

Recent events have raised concerns about the ethical standards of public and private organisations, with some attention falling
on business schools as providers of education and training to managers and senior␣executives. This paper investigates the
nature of, motivation and commitment to, ethics tuition provided by the business schools. Using content analysis of their
institutional and home websites, we appraise their corporate identity, level of engagement in socially responsible programmes,
degree of social inclusion, and the relationship to their ethics teaching. Based on published research, a schema is developed
with corporate identity forming an integral part, to represent the macro-environment, parent institution, the business school
and their relationships to ethics education provision. This is validated by our findings.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a dramatically expanding area of activity for managers and academics. Consumer demand
for responsibly produced and fair trade goods is swelling, resulting in increased demands for CSR activity and information.
Assets under professional management and invested with a social responsibility focus have also grown dramatically over the
last 10 years. Investors choosing social responsibility investment strategies require access to information not provided through
traditional financial statements and analyses. At the same time, a group of mainstream institutional investors has encouraged
a movement to incorporate environmental, social, and governance information into equity analysis, and multi-stakeholder groups
have supported enhanced business reporting on these issues. The majority of research in this area has been performed on European
and Australian firms. We expand on this literature by exploring the CSR disclosure practices of a size- and industry-stratified
sample of 50 publicly traded U.S. firms, performing a content analysis on the complete identifiable public information portfolio
provided by these firms during 2004. CSR activity was disclosed by most firms in the sample, and was included in nearly half
of public disclosures made during that year by the sample firms. Areas of particular emphasis are community matters, health
and safety, diversity and human resources (HR) matters, and environmental programs. The primary venues of disclosure are mass
media releases such as corporate websites and press releases, followed closely by disclosures contained in mandatory filings.
Consistent with prior research, we identify industry effects in terms of content, emphasis, and reporting format choices.
Unlike prior research, we can offer only mixed evidence on the existence of a size effect. The disclosure frequency and emphasis
is significantly different for the largest one-fifth of the firms, but no identifiable trends are present within the rest
of the sample. There are, however, identifiable size effects with respect to reporting format choice. Use of websites is positively
related to firm size, while the use of mandatory filings is negatively related to firm size. Finally, and also consistent
with prior literature, we document a generally self-laudatory tone in the content of CSR disclosures for the sample firms. 相似文献
