Under increasing domestic and global pressures, the survival of small agri-businesses in developing countries such as Sri Lanka is being challenged because of their poor strategic focus and weak coordination along the supply chain. The quality, efficiency, and versatility of production, processing, distribution, and marketing systems play a significant role in the competitiveness of agri-businesses. Improved competitiveness requires closer coordination along the supply chain so as to decrease transaction costs and create opportunities for differentiation. In Sri Lanka, the government has a greater role to play in developing an enabling environment for the chains to which small agri-businesses belong.  相似文献

This study empirically explores the relationship between firm characteristics and capital structure in Sri Lankan companies. Six years of data for 158 firms listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange are analyzed using a conditional quantile regression. The findings indicate that the capital structure of Sri Lankan firms differ between firms in different quantiles of leverage. These differences are significant with the sign of explanatory variables change with the level of leverage. The results indicate that individual firm’s finance policy needs to be responsive to the firm characteristics and should match with the different borrowing requirements of listed firms.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

There is a bricolage of competing local and global ideologies, value systems, and practices vying for the attention of urban South Asian consumers. We term this as “postmodern complexity”. Drawing from a three-year ethnographic research expedition on Sinhalese Sri Lankan families, we illustrate the process by which these families mediate postmodern complexity during new family formation. Our findings support an emergent framework to understand the processes in which families negotiate the influence of competing discourses and illustrate that the process is a perpetual experimentation spanning across three overlapping stages. We argue that negotiating postmodern complexity in our families is a hybrid and creolised resolution that is tailored to each family’s unique identity needs. Families can draw from a multitude of meanings that are anchored in consumption in order to create a unique family identity that is most appropriate to their identity pursuits.  相似文献

This study undertakes a longitudinal analysis of the ethical management practices of Sri Lankan companies by comparing the results from a survey conducted in 2003. During this period regulatory developments have taken place within Sri Lanka and internationally aimed at improving the level of corporate governance. Based upon this survey data we conclude that progress has been made in ensuring that ethical management practices are more homogenous and standard practice across companies. Internationalized companies remain the ones that are more aware of the environmental consequences of their actions, although few companies, unfortunately, recognize this as an issue of concern.  相似文献

This study empirically investigates the market orientation strategy of firms operating in the food and beverage industry in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. Market orientation was conceptualized through three sets of activities: intelligence generation, intelligence dissemination, and responsiveness. Firms were grouped based on the level of market orientation and were compared. It was revealed that one group had a separate marketing division with specialized marketing personnel and a positive top management philosophy toward market orientation. Firms in this group showed a greater level of performance compared to firms in other groups.  相似文献

Knowledge that has been accumulated through research efforts concerning credit card ownership and usage behaviour has been confined to Western societies. Given the importance of cross‐national application of consumer marketing concepts and propositions for academic and practical reasons, investigations are needed to test whether consumer credit card usage patterns that are assumed to exist in the West also exist in non‐Western parts of the world, especially in Asia. Therefore, objectives of this research were to explore credit card ownership and usage practices in Sri Lanka, and to explore the relationship between credit card ownership and usage practices, and demographic and socio‐economic characteristics of credit card users. The findings offer implications for researchers and practitioners.  相似文献

This paper examines the different motivations behind strategic choice in base of the pyramid or subsistence markets. Two strategies are examined through comparative analysis: market extension and strategic intent. Using two commercial bank's micro-lending business strategies in Sri Lanka, a comparative case study suggests that strategic intent is motivated by building capabilities over time that results in successful poverty alleviation, whereas market expansion is motivated by an immediate desire to expand overall sales revenue. This conclusion may help reframe subsistence market or BoP arguments away from such false choices as appropriate size (e.g., multinational corporations versus small and medium size enterprises) toward more useful discussion on understanding why firms participate in subsistence markets and what is the motivation behind their strategic choice. By considering more than just size and scope and studying the motivations behind long-term solutions to poverty alleviation, firm success can be better understood and achieved.  相似文献

Purpose: This article explores the idea that different types of interaction among supply chain partners entail different value-creation logics (interdependence, objective, focus of coordination, and value-creation initiatives) and that they must, therefore, be managed in different ways.

Approach: The article reviews and synthesises the relevant literature and presents a summary of the findings.

Findings: Four types of value-creation logic are explored: (1) Logistics integration is best managed by undertaking efforts to achieve mutual transparency, adaptations, and appropriate logistical planning; (2) in unilateral learning, management's task is to ensure the efficient flow and processing of information from one party to another; (3) in unilateral development, one party must have good knowledge of the partner's organization and provide the relevant expertise for coaching the latter's problem-solving efforts—management's task is primarily to define relevant projects and facilitate coaching; and (4) in bilateral learning, management's task is to obtain a mutual understanding of the partner's organisations and establish appropriate joint problem-solving arrangements.

Research implications: The article calls for a better understanding of the motivations, effects, and strategic implications of different ways of collaborating with partners in supply chain relationships.

Contribution: The article presents a case for the strategic value of collaboration, rather than merely addressing the tactical aspects of supply chain relationships.  相似文献

The provision of after‐sales services is considered as a source of product differentiation leading to competitive advantage of a firm. As a consequence, there is a need of monitoring and measuring the activities of after‐sales service departments to ensure that the objectives of their existence are satisfied. Yet, it is very rare to find previous studies that investigated after‐sales service provision. We investigated different dimensions of after‐sales service provision of home appliances in the Sri Lankan context. The study operationalized different dimensions of after‐sales service provision from three different perspectives and used multiple parameters to evaluate the nature of provision.  相似文献

By integrating the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and self-image congruence, this study seeks to investigate elite consumers’ purchase intentions towards products made in foreign countries. The data were gathered via a survey conducted amongst 316 Sri Lankan elite consumers across two product categories. The findings demonstrate that consumers’ attitudes towards products made in foreign countries are driven by subjective norms and self-image congruence. The study shows that self-image congruence is the stronger predictor of consumers’ attitudes towards products made in foreign countries. Also, the effect of self-image congruence on consumers’ purchase intentions is partially mediated by their attitudes towards products made in foreign countries.  相似文献

Exchanges among firms operating in supply chains are complex due to relational embeddedness, i.e., the extent to which relationships, rather than economic rationality, govern firm‐to‐firm interactions. For many years interfirm relationships were assumed to be best managed via coercive tactics. However, for the last two decades much attention has been given in the literature to more relational forms of governance, and recent supply chain research examining relationship nature, magnitude, and type implies the need for an alternative symbiotic explanation for supply chain relationship effectiveness. To address this void in the literature, this article introduces the concept of interorganizational citizenship behaviors (ICB's). Based on a review of literature from multiple business domains, common types of ICB's are identified, and research hypotheses are developed and tested. Future research initiatives and implications for supply chain management practice are also provided.  相似文献

Communication in and around business organizations has changed due to new technologies, the demand for intercultural communication skills, the changing person–organization relationship, and the global nature of organizing. As a result, new communication competencies may be required. The author's objective was to identify specific communication competencies important in the contemporary business and professional environment. Toward that objective, articles referring to communication from best-selling popular press and practitioner-oriented business periodicals were used as artifacts for a content analysis. Six inductively derived competencies represent a mix of traditional and contemporary communication skills. The influence of collaborative communication and global interconnectivity permeated each theme. Furthermore, the competencies reveal the necessity of a skill set that transcends typical disciplinary divisions—encompassing technology, intergroup relations, nonverbal and chronemic awareness, relational competence, and more. These competencies should be of interest to communication educators and trainers as they design curriculum and training plans for a contemporary audience.  相似文献

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the fortunes of multiple companies around the globe. Accordingly, questions are increasingly being asked about how organizations can revitalize during and after a crisis. Yet, we have limited understanding of how organizations renew themselves during crises over time. We explore this question through the lens and examination of two South-Asian airlines: Pakistan International Airlines and Sri Lankan Airlines. The cases offer important insights into the reasons behind underperformance of state-controlled enterprises and renewal activities. We shed light on strategic renewal (SR) in the wake of increasing liberalization and deregulations in the global airline industry. To this end, we propose a four-stage approach towards renewing such underperforming organizations to respond effectively to black swan events and external shocks.  相似文献

This article analyzes how new public financial management system should address the efficiency and effectiveness of the public sector and the emerging accrual basis accounting with e-governance for greater e-transparency on public-sector accounting in Sri Lanka. Despite the setting up of e-framework in 1983, the Sri Lankan public-sector accountancy environment during the last two decades raises concerns about efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability of the e-framework. The findings provide evidence of the importance of the economy and efficiency in the usage of public funds to provide more convenient access to government accounting information for citizens in Sri Lanka.  相似文献

This paper explores the cultural dimension of organizing international buyer-seller relationships. Based on studies of national cultures, it is argued that economic actors will reproduce their social order when interacting across cultural boundaries. Differences in the organization of international buyer-seller relationships can thus be explained by cultural differences. When testing the hypotheses of cultural differences in the context of international distribution channels for Norwegian farmed salmon, only minor cultural differences were detected. This may be due to the fact that the fisheries is a very international industry, and a specific culture within the international fisheries industry may exist.  相似文献

Research has consistently established the strategic importance of supply chain collaboration. As a result, interfirm behavioral dynamics and relationships have emerged as key topics for both the academic and practitioner communities. This paper explores an interpersonal exchange tactic that is inherent to many collaborative initiatives—interorganizational citizenship behaviors (ICBs). The study specifically investigates why retail customers in business‐to‐business exchange relationships would exhibit ICBs, and explores how they assess and respond to the ICBs of suppliers. Findings of the study suggest that customers generally interpret and value the various types of ICBs differently, resulting in differential effects regarding the supply chain performance and relational implications of the behavior. These results not only inform managerial practice but also provide future research opportunities in the area of ICBs and the broader realm of interpersonal supply chain dynamics.  相似文献

Our goal at JBL is not just to provide a forum for theoretical conversation but also to proactively invite more insightful and interactive conversation. As active inquiry and open dialogue are critical to achieving this goal, we discuss the nature of inquiry and argue for developing the skills and conditions required to promote dialogue over discussion. Only through more profound dialogue can we address the challenges of a tumultuous decision‐making environment, advance theoretical understanding, and improve managerial practice. We then introduce “Dialogue,” a new feature at JBL, which will consist of concise statements of alternative perspectives and diverse views. Through Dialogue, we invite members of the supply chain community to join colleagues in a grand adventure of knowledge discovery.
