The strategic management literature indicates that there is high variety in the form and nature of strategic processes within organizations. By contrast, writers on strategic accounting tend focus on the structure and formality of strategic activities and call for a balance of financial and non-financial information to support strategic processes. This study explores the conceptual basis for this perspective and also investigates empirically whether such characterisations hold in practice. The empirical part of the study draws on questionnaire responses by senior corporate accountants and interviews held with a subset of respondents from this group. The results indicate that strategy development and implementation activities tend to be structured and formal, and while greater emphasis is placed on financial information in strategy implementation, in strategy development both financial and non-financial information are used. Differences however prevail across firms as to what is considered to be strategic and the role played by financial and non-financial information varies across companies. A high degree of organization specificity also exists in the uses of strategic accounting information. The study found support for normative ideals within the firms investigated but high organizational particularity also pervades the deployment of strategic accounting information.  相似文献

Recent attention in the general management literature has focused on mechanisms and processes used by organizations to respond and adapt to changes in their operating environment. There is, however, very little broad-based empirical research examining the role that management accounting control systems can play in shaping organizational change. Much of the empirical research to date has focused on the role of accounting as a diagnostic tool for assessing and rewarding managerial performance despite the recognition that accounting can serve as a dialogue, learning and idea creation machine (Burchell et al., 1980. Accounting Organisations and Society 5,5–27). The purpose of this study is to explore how accounting can serve this alternative role. We use (Simons, R. 1990.) Accounting Organisations and Society 15, 127–143). interactive/diagnostic classification of management control systems to capture how accounting can be used as a learning machine in the formulation and implementation of strategic change. A theoretical model is developed to examine the relationship between strategic change, style of budget use and performance. It is argued that an interactive style of budget use can mitigate the disruptive performance effects of the strategic change process. The data, collected from Chief Executive Officers in 63 public hospitals, provide results that are consistent with our expectations.  相似文献

Emerging evidence suggests that performance measurement systems may generate positive psychological effects, leading to higher levels of managerial performance. We extend this literature by examining the extent to which diagnostic vis-à-vis interactive utilisation of performance measures may be associated with decreasing role ambiguity and increasing psychological empowerment with positive consequences for performance. We find that the interactive utilisation of non-financial performance measures can be particularly important for generating a positive psychological experience and (indirectly) increasing performance. Our study contributes further evidence of the psychologically beneficial role played by management control systems.  相似文献

The balanced scorecard (BSC) is an integrated strategic performance management framework that helps organizations translate strategic objectives into relevant performance measures. This paper offers guidelines for implementing an experiential approach to learning about the BSC through the study of “real-world” organizations. This approach emphasizes hands-on experience with the team-based, cross-functional, and strategic aspects of management accounting designed to address several educational objectives, including: understanding organizational strategy and critical success factors; gaining insight into how to measure performance; and developing oral presentation and team-building skills. Specific examples of classroom materials to facilitate implementation of this approach in management accounting courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels are also offered.  相似文献

Much available numerical information is non-financial. This information has the advantages of quantifying events that cannot be expressed in financial terms, timeliness and the avoidance of accounting procedures. This paper investigates the usefulness of quantitative non-financial information (QNFI) as a proxy for current and future economic and accounting income. The study analyses a hypothetical firm which undertakes long term contracts. A mathematical model is constructed of the cash generation process of the company. QNFI measures are found to dominate accounting measures with regard to estimating economic income and predicting both economic and accounting income. These results are confirmed by a stochastic simulation model which allows for a more complex model.  相似文献

Institutional and market changes force many organizations across economic sectors to reconsider their strategic position and engage in strategic change. Organizations differ in their ability to realize strategic change, however, which appears to depend on several factors in their strategic management process. In this paper we explore two such factors simultaneously, which are the composition of the top management team and the characteristics of the management accounting system. In particular, the paper investigates how top management team heterogeneity affects strategic change both directly, and indirectly, through the design and use of the management accounting system. Hypotheses are developed and tested through a survey study among 103 Spanish public hospitals. We find significant effects of top management team heterogeneity on the extent and direction of strategic change, and find that the use of the management accounting system partially mediates the relationship between top management team heterogeneity and strategic change. The paper contributes to the extant literature on the complex relationships between strategic change and MAS [Gerdin, J., & Greve, J. (2004). Forms of contingency fit in management accounting research – a critical review. Accounting, Organizations and Society, 29, 303–326], by analysing both extent and direction of strategic change, and by recognizing the importance of top management teams’ use of the management accounting system for strategic change.  相似文献

In recent years academic scholars have given increasing attention to the importance of strategic measurement systems including both non-financial and financial measures. One of the approaches adopted is that of the balanced scorecard. It is distinct from other strategic measurement systems in that it is more than an ad hoc collection of financial and non-financial measures. It contains outcome measures and the performance drivers of outcomes, linked together in cause-and-effect relationships, and thus aims to be a feed-forward control system. Furthermore, the balanced scorecard is intended not only as a strategic measurement system but also as a strategic control system which can align departmental and personal goals to overall strategy. This paper first examines the extent to which there is a cause-and-effect relationship among the four areas of measurement suggested (the financial, customer, internal-business-process and learning and growth perspectives). The paper then examines whether the balanced scorecard can link strategy to operational metrics which managers can understand and influence. Finally, it discusses and suggests some improvements to the balanced scorecard.  相似文献

This paper reports on a survey of manufacturing companies, and uses structural equation modeling to examine the relationships between the changing competitive environment, and a range of organizational variables as antecedents to management accounting change. The results indicate that an increasingly competitive environment has resulted in an increased focus on differentiation strategies. This, in turn, has influenced changes in organizational design, advanced manufacturing technology and advanced management accounting practices. These three changes have led to a greater reliance on non-financial accounting information which has led to improved organizational performance.  相似文献

This paper investigates the role of non-financial performance measures in executive compensation. Using a sample of airline firms we document that passenger load factor, an important non-financial measure for firms in this industry, is positively associated with CEO cash compensation. This association is significant after controlling for traditional accounting performance measures (return on assets) and financial performance measures (stock returns). This evidence is consistent with the hypothesis that non-financial measures provide incremental information about CEOs actions over financial measures and hence, receive a positive weight in compensation contracts. We also explore cross-sectional differences in the importance of non-financial performance measures. We find weak evidence that CEO power and the noise of financial performance measures impact the relationship between non-financial performance measures and cash compensation.JEL Classification: J33, L25, L93, M41, M52  相似文献

This paper provides an analysis of the relationship between different management control practices and the leadership of medical departments in Norway. There has been ongoing debate about how the medical profession absorbs accounting knowledge: some argue that there has been hybridization, while others consider it as polarization. The explanation provided in this paper details the management control practices that health care enterprises use. We draw on two of the control perspectives in Simons's model of ladders of control: namely, diagnostic and interactive controls. The study thus provides insights into the problem of influencing clinician managers to use management accounting practices.  相似文献

Literature shows that female (male) managers are more likely to adopt a transformational (transactional) leadership style, as well as make greater (lesser) use of information for decision-making. We draw on this research to investigate whether gender is related to a manager's use of management control systems (MCS) and performance measures. We surveyed the head of school of all schools across all Australian public universities. Our results indicate that females use MCS in an interactive manner to a greater extent than their male counterparts and make greater use of non-financial performance measures. We conclude with contributions to theory and practice.  相似文献

The study examines how combinations of management techniques and management accounting practices enhance the performance of organizations, under particular strategic priorities. Companies were identified as emphasizing product differentiation, low price strategies or a combination of both. Management techniques included in the study were improving existing processes; quality systems; manufacturing systems innovations; integrating systems; team-based structures and human resource management policies. Management accounting practices important in assisting managers implement management techniques were traditional management accounting techniques; activity-based techniques; balanced performance measures; employee-based measures; benchmarking and strategic planning. A systems approach, using cluster analysis, was used to examine hypothesized associations between performance and a range of management techniques and management accounting practices, under various strategic orientations. This provided a method to examine the way in which the entire range of variables combined to affect performance.

This paper provides systematic research-based evidence on the usage of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) concept in German-speaking countries. We develop three primary types of BSC usage reflecting the successive phases in the evolution of the BSC concept and of its implementation in practice. This typology ranges from the BSC’s origin as a multidimensional framework for strategic performance measurement that combines financial and non-financial measures to its advanced usage as an integrated strategic management system that describes strategy by a cause-and-effect logic and that is linked to the reward system. We use this theoretical framework to analyze the spread, implementation and benefits of the different types of Balanced Scorecards. Moreover, the impact of size and industry on BSC usage is analyzed. Our sample consists of a clearly defined segment of the most important publicly traded firms in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and we achieved an overall response rate of 87%.  相似文献

Strategic management accounting (SMA) has been presented as an efficacious approach to strategy formulation and implementation. It also suggests accountants move away from purely financial concerns to give consideration to wider business issues. Management accounting change has attracted significant research attention in recent years. This case study explores the issues which surround change and which enable the adoption of SMA and the repositioning of management accountants to become more strategic. The empirical enquiry is based in one company through a prolonged series of interviews and meetings which enabled activities over a number of years to be reviewed. This revealed an increasing strategic role for management accountants in informing strategic decision‐making and how this role came into being. The research is informed by institutional theories and neoinstitutionalism in particular, to interpret the external and internal influences on the change in roles of some management accountants and the outputs of their work.  相似文献

In this exploratory field study, I test the relative and incremental information content of two non-financial performance measures compared to financial performance measures for future financial performance. The proprietary database used is from the contracts of the managers of 27 responsibility centers of a large Dutch service firm. Three years of monthly observations are used for the analysis. The accounting literature is ambiguous about whether non-financial measures have relative or incremental information content, or both, beyond lagged financial measures for future financial performance. Although it is often stated that non-financial performance measures are better indicators for future financial performance than lagged financial performance, the empirical accounting research evaluates the incremental contribution of non-financial measures beyond lagged financial measures.I find that in my research context the two non-financial measures absence frequency and on-time delivery do not have more relative information content than lagged financial measures. However, the non-financial measures have incremental information content beyond the lagged financial measures for both future costs and future revenues. In addition, the individual non-financial measures have different lags for costs and revenues.  相似文献

Past research has overlooked the specific informational needs and uses of management accounting information by boards of directors, which constitute a distinctive unit of analysis, focusing mainly on organizational actors within the boundaries of the firm. The aim of this study is to examine the use of management accounting information to oversee strategy implementation in the context of governance. Specifically, we intend to establish theoretical properties and propose a measurement model that captures the use of budget, financial and non-financial performance indicators by boards of directors to oversee the strategic plan. To develop the measurement instrument, conceptual specifications of constructs have been established based on a matrix approach that combines (i) the information conveyed by the three management accounting practices, along with (ii) two theoretical properties reflecting board activities, namely monitoring implementation of the strategic plan, and questioning of the strategic plan. The validity and reliability of the instrument have been evaluated and discussed using a rigorous multi-method integrated approach that includes a literature review, exploratory interviews, consultation of experts in management accounting and governance, and survey data collected from three samples of boards of directors.  相似文献

This paper examines whether the choice of performance measures in CEO bonus compensation contracts is associated with earnings management. From a sample of FTSE350 Index firms over the period of 2005–2014, we investigate the relationship between earnings management, through discretionary accruals and real activities management, and (1) the use of and extent of reliance on financial and non-financial performance measures in CEO bonus contracts; and (2) the use of long-term and short-term measures in CEO bonus contracts. We find less income-increasing manipulation through discretionary accruals and expenses when non-financial performance measures (NFPMs) are used alongside financial performance measures (FPMs) and when the NFPMs are used to a larger extent than FPMs. Furthermore, we find less discretionary accruals when long-term performance measures are used. This implies that non-financial and long-term measures encourage executives to work towards the long-term success of the company rather than their own short-term reward.  相似文献

This paper explores how managers perceive stakeholders’ influence for the choice of internal environmental performance indicators (EPI) that underlie strategic performance measurement systems. Drawing on the concept of levers of control, we conduct a field investigation within a large multinational firm operating in an environmentally sensitive industry. The firm pursues a proactive environmental strategy driven by a willingness to achieve corporate economic success while taking environmental issues into consideration. Our investigation encompasses interviews with key environmental executives and a review of corporate documents. We show that EPI are used as interactive and diagnostic controls, with stakeholders’ influences being integrated into the corporation through its beliefs system. We find that four distinct influence patterns emerge. These influence patterns range from being narrow and unidirectional to very broad and interactive, conditional upon the firm's environmental impact on specific stakeholders, and its need for legitimization. The study extends research on the relationships between stakeholders and corporate environmental management and reveals ways in which strategic performance measurement systems integrate environmental considerations.  相似文献

This paper examines the challenge mounted against long established management accounting practices by Kaplan (1983) and Johnson and Kaplan (1987) from a public sector perspective. It seeks to determine the extent to which this challenge to the private sector - of a lack of innovation in management accounting practice in the face of a rapidly changing environment - holds true for public sector organisations. Furthermore, by drawing on substantive studies of management change in both the private sector and the public sector, this paper assesses (a) the tsunsfeubilitv of ideas and practices from the private to the: public sector (b) the need to study process of change and (c) the potential role of strategic management accounting as an innovative practice in addressing the agenda for change which confronts the public sector.  相似文献
