Conceptualizing visitor satisfaction management in heritage settings: an exploratory blueprinting analysis of Leeds Castle, Kent

Historic buildings are central to the cultural identity of European nations, many are also important tourist attractions, but their internal configurations are idiosyncratic, with steep narrow stairways, many passageways and tiny windows. These conditions present contemporary heritage managers with a range of problems relating to conservation, as well as presentation and visitor management. This paper examines the relationship between service design concepts and the management of visitors' experiences and satisfaction within a heritage setting, applying a modified service blueprinting approach, based on visit diaries and interviews with management, in an exploratory study of Leeds Castle, one of Britain's oldest historic houses. The limitations of the research method are considered, and the paper discusses the need for further research into the management of visitor experiences in the heritage sector of tourism.     

19th annual TTRA conference

Cindy Guernsey, Gin Hayden, Sarah Richardson and C.R. Goeldner briefly summarize the 19th Annual Conference of the Travel and Tourism Research Association held in Montreal, Canada on 19–23 June 1988. The conference discussed a variety of research methods and applications, ways of improving demand for different attractions, and the future of tourism generally.     

18th annual TTRA conference

Goeldner and Deborah Eckstein briefly summarize the 18th Annual Conference of the Travel and Tourism Research Association held in Seattle, Washington on 7–11 June 1987 The conference dealt with tourism market research and ways to improve the performance of the tourism industry.     

“ENTER2008”: Report on the 15th International Conference on Information Technology and Travel and Tourism, 23–25 January 2008, Innsbruck,Austria

As the world's largest annual event on information and communication technologies (ICTs) and travel and tourism, ENTER2008 was held in Innsbruck, a small medieval town in Austria. Like previous ENTER conferences, delegates were able to participate personally in the discussion of the latest research findings and industrial innovations in the context of ICTs in travel and tourism. Delegates could also enjoy the hospitality and unique experiences offered by the conference host and organizer. Different from other ENTER conference proceedings, which always had front pages in silver, ENTER2008 proceedings used an attractive and bright cover page in a good mixture of yellow and red.     

The 7th Asia-Pacific CHRIE Conference

Despite the increase in use of user-generated electronic content as an information source by tourists, its influence in destination image formation is not yet fully understood. This research aimed to explore the communicated destination image held by tourists to Zanzibar Island (Tanzania) by utilizing communications in Lonely Planet. Content analysis of 214 posts using TextSTAT yielded 13 destination attributes. Comparatively, functional attributes were dominant in potential tourists whereas post-travel image perception was dominated by psychological attributes. Those who have visited tended to have a positive image of the island compared with those who are planning to visit the island. The results necessitate the differential use of the functional- and psychological-based information in communicating with tourists at different information-search stages. Studies to capture communications in another language are recommended as well as the employment of methodologies that might reveal hidden images held by tourists.     

ENTER 2005 – The 12th International Conference on Information Technology and Travel & Tourism held in Innsbruck,Austria on January 26–28, 2005

With the attendance of about 400 delegates from over 40 nations in the world, the 12^th International Conference on Information Technology and Travel & Tourism (ENTER 2005) was held on January 26–28, 2005 in Innsbruck of Austria. Interestingly, the Conference was turned to a very noticeable contradiction by showing the latest findings and developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in travel & tourism but in a medieval city. Following the tradition of the previous ENTER conferences, ENTER 2005 has successfully achieved it primary objective of providing a forum for international delegates to exchange and debate various ICT issues that were related to travel and tourism.     

Personal perception and community speculation: A British resort in the 19th century

The paper presents a case history of the origin and early development of what later became a major UK seaside resort. Weston-super-Mare. Early developers were faced with considerable environmental difficulties, and by using a variety of contemporary documentary sources the paper considers how the problems were overcome within the context of both developers' and early visitors' perceptions, and of the regional market for tourism in the early nineteenth century. The reaction of the existing local community to development potential is also considered, and more general conclusions are reached on the nature of resort development in the nineteenth century.
