The aim of this study is to compare the organizational personalities of the tourism schools in two universities in North and South Cyprus. The data were collected by means of an interview schedule and were examined using content analysis. The results showed that the tourism schools of both countries had distinct personalities due to the differences in the higher education systems, management styles, organizational structure and administrative behaviors of their universities. For both parts of the island, the results showed that international accreditations, collaborations, and dual programs with international bodies and different universities will enhance student satisfaction and the success of the current universities. The researchers suggest that both institutions should take into account the needs of the industry and improve their cooperation with the stakeholders of the tourism sector in order to promote their curricula. 相似文献

The study of gender differences in entrepreneurial self-efficacy to date has produced inconclusive results. Cross-cultural studies are virtually non-existent. The present study seeks to understand the complex interplay of biological sex, socialized gender-roles, and culture on entrepreneurial self-efficacy and motivation to become an entrepreneur. Findings indicate that among American business students the traditional view of “entrepreneur as male” is fading. For the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs, a new entrepreneur stereotype is emerging that balances stereotypical feminine and masculine characteristics. These findings were not replicated in Spain where traditional gender-role stereotypes associated with entrepreneurship persist, even among business students. Implications for entrepreneurial education are discussed as they relate to the development of skills associated with venture creation. 相似文献

We conduct a two-stage (DEA and regression) analysis of the efficiency of New Zealand secondary schools. Unlike previous applications
of two-stage semi-parametric modelling of the school “production process”, we use Simar and Wilson’s double bootstrap procedure,
which permits valid inference in the presence of unknown serial correlation in the efficiency scores. We are therefore able
to draw robust conclusions about a system that has undergone extensive reforms with respect to ideas high on the educational
agenda such as decentralised school management and parental choice. Most importantly, we find that school type affects school

This study provides insight into the importance of national culture, investment in operations, and performance in the context of emerging Asian economies with a collectivist orientation, which are compared to industrialized Western nations with an individualist orientation. Hypotheses are developed and tested based on the cultural concept of individualism/collectivism, the theory of performance frontiers, and the extent of economic development. More specifically, data collected from 639 manufacturing plants in nine countries are used to first assess the influence of the cultural trait of individualism/collectivism on the extent of investment in structural assets (specifically: physical and capital-based) and infrastructural assets (specifically: team-based methods and improvement programs). Second, the influence of the extent of economic development on these investment factors is measured. Third, evidence is provided supportive of the theory of performance frontiers, and the nature of resource investments in the context of the cultural construct of individualism/collectivism. And fourth, support is provided for the efficacy of this theory, as well as for its compatibility and association with the resource-based view of the firm. Overall, this study makes important contributions to both theory and practice, and provides evidence for the role played by the cultural characteristic of individualism/collectivism in determining plant level investment outcomes in emerging Asian economies. 相似文献

Ten models of consumer demand, including the indirect translog model, the linear expenditure system and the Rotterdam model, are applied to Swedish data and compared, using fit and predictive performance as criteria. Demand models tend to be superior to naive models, but nonadditive models are not clearly better than additive. Each model is estimated on two levels of commodity aggregation. The present study aims to examine and compare the promotion criteria of the teachers in North Cyprus and Turkey as a manager and a supervisor in their profession as well as determining its similarities and differences. Presenting the teachers’ criteria on the basis of promotion in their profession is the importance of this study. Document analysis has been used in this study in order to reach the aim. The criteria of both being a school principal and supervisor in North Cyprus and Turkey have been compared. The paper develops net entrepreneurial productivity (NEP) as a complex latent construct of second order composed of productive, unproductive and destructive entrepreneurial activity. Its parameters were estimated using the partial least squares structural equation modeling method in the selected 15 developed and 7 post-transition economies for the average values in the period 2006-2013. The results unveil the direct and indirect effects between entrepreneurial activities, and between entrepreneurial activities and NEP, as well as that the level of NEP and productive entrepreneurial activity in developed economies is at a higher level compared with post-transition economies. The results suggest that for NEP and productive entrepreneurship to take place, regardless of the group of economies considered, an effective institutional environment that supports human capital development, fair competition and transparency should be established and maintained before developing more specific entrepreneurial programs and policies. 相似文献

This paper presents an empirical analysis of citizens' preferences for public elementary and secondary education expenditures. Survey data collected in conjunction with a school tax referendum and a multinomial probit random utility model are used to make inferences concerning the preference mappings of citizens. These estimated mappings, in turn, imply unique estimates of the demands of citizens for public education expenditures. Citizens' beliefs concerning whether expenditures are wisely spent and will affect school quality are seen to be important determinants of demand. A cross-cultural or comparative approach is applied in order to demonstrate the main characteristics both of the theoretic background and practice of the Chinese and the Swedish principles of employment systems. This paper attempts to point out some main/problems of the Chinese system and to make some challenges for suggested reform. After examining basic conflicts and relationships between public policy and the working of free market forces in the two countries, the paper suggests how the Chinese traditional socialist principles ought to be revised if a socialist market economy is to be developed. The key to reforming the employment system lies in changing the form of ownership and management of enterprises by allowing fair competition and bankruptcy of enterprises. 相似文献

The paper reports the results of a contents analysis performed on fifty personnel and HRM texts. It suggests that there is a common set of person-nel/HRM tasks across cultures. Within this common set there are differences in the priority accorded to particular tasks. British HRM texts give priority to organizational theory, American HRM texts prioritize corporate strategy, while personnel texts prioritize industrial relations and collective bargaining. The conclusion considers as possible explanations the divergence in the systems of industrial relations of the two countries and the markets towards which the texts are oriented. It argues that a more likely explanation derives from the differential cultural values which inform managerial research in Britain and America. 相似文献

This paper investigates how the recruitment and selection for project-based postdoc positions are organised in the current academic landscape characterised by increasing temporary research funding and how principal investigators construct the ‘ideal’ postdoc. Our findings are based on a qualitative comparative multiple-case study in Social and Natural Sciences departments of universities in four European countries. This study contributes to the literature on the neoliberal university and academic staff evaluation by using a systemic, power-sensitive approach that examines how postdocs enter the academic system and how manifestations of precarity are exacerbated. Our critical analysis reveals three manifestations of precarity that the current academic system creates for postdocs, related to control, contracts, and careers. We discuss the effects for individual postdocs and their careers and the quality of knowledge production in public funded higher education institutions. 相似文献
