This paper builds on existing research investigating the root causes of terrorism by considering youth unemployment as a measure of economic deprivation. In particular, the study focuses on terrorism in Middle Eastern and North African (MENAP) countries and features terrorism incident count data for the period 1998–2012 using negative binomial regression models. In our exogenous model, we find that while youth unemployment tends to increase domestic terrorism, it does not have any significant effect on transnational terrorism. Given concerns about endogeneity of youth unemployment in these models, we use two kinds of corrections-instrumental variables and lagged variables. We control for endogeneity by using military expenditure, under-five mortality rate and foreign direct investment as instruments. We are not able to reject the null hypothesis that youth unemployment is exogenous. Using lagged variables, we find a similar result as noted in the exogenous specifications with regard to the effect of youth unemployment on domestic and transnational terrorism. We also find evidence that domestic terrorism tends to have a positive relationship with press freedom, religious and linguistic fractionalization, and area of the country. Transnational terrorism has a positive association with the quality of democracy and a negative association with political stability and regulatory quality. The amount of natural resources tends to be negatively associated with domestic terrorism and positively associated with transnational terrorism.  相似文献

A framework for the detection of change points in the expectation in sequences of random variables is presented. Specifically, we investigate time series with general distributional assumptions that may show an unknown number of change points in the expectation occurring on multiple time scales and that may also contain change points in other parameters. To that end we propose a multiple filter test (MFT) that tests the null hypothesis of constant expectation and, in case of rejection of the null hypothesis, an algorithm that estimates the change points.The MFT has three important benefits. First, it allows for general distributional assumptions in the underlying model, assuming piecewise sequences of i.i.d. random variables, where also relaxations with regard to identical distribution or independence are possible. Second, it uses a MOSUM type statistic and an asymptotic setting in which the MOSUM process converges weakly to a functional of a Brownian motion which is then used to simulate the rejection threshold of the statistical test. This approach enables a simultaneous application of multiple MOSUM processes which improves the detection of change points that occur on different time scales. Third, we also show that the method is practically robust against changes in other distributional parameters such as the variance or higher order moments which might occur with or even without a change in expectation. In this paper we present a consistent standard normal model specification test for ARMAX models. The null hypothesis is that the ARMAX model represents the conditional expectation of the dependent variable relative to the entire past of the economic vector time series process under review. This null is tested against the general alternative hypothesis that the null is false. The test is applied to testing the rational expectations-natural rate (RE-NR) hypothesis for the Netherlands according to the approach of Sargent (1976). This paper investigates the dynamic structure of a standard disequilibrium model. By assuming that the model variables are non-stationary time series with respect to ample empirical evidence, we find the following: 1) It is the exogenous variables rather than the price adjustment process that form the real adjustment force of the model; 2) Quantity disequilibrium and price disequilibrium are isomeric in the model, and follow a weakly stationary process when all the variables areI (1) nonstationary; 3) The disequilibrium process has a none-zero mean when the weakly exogenous variables of the demand equation do not cointegrate with those of the supply equation, corresponding to certain 'chronic disequilibrium' phenomena; 4) The isomerism between quantity disequilibrium and price changes makes it unnecessary to lean on the 'min condition' to characterise disequilibrium.  相似文献

In the present paper we construct a new, simple, consistent and powerful test for independence by using symbolic dynamics and permutation entropy as a measure of serial dependence. We also give a standard asymptotic distribution of an affine transformation of the permutation entropy under the null hypothesis of independence. The test statistic and its standard limit distribution are invariant to any monotonic transformation. The test applies to time series with discrete or continuous distributions. Eventhough the test is based on entropy measures, it avoids smoothed non-parametric estimation. An application to several daily financial time series illustrates our approach.  相似文献

We consider the estimation and hypothesis testing problems for the partial linear regression models when some variables are distorted with errors by some unknown functions of commonly observable confounding variable. The proposed estimation procedure is designed to accommodate undistorted as well as distorted variables. To test a hypothesis on the parametric components, a restricted least squares estimator is proposed under the null hypothesis. Asymptotic properties for the estimators are established. A test statistic based on the difference between the residual sums of squares under the null and alternative hypotheses is proposed, and we also obtain the asymptotic properties of the test statistic. A wild bootstrap procedure is proposed to calculate critical values. Simulation studies are conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed procedure, and a real example is analyzed for an illustration.  相似文献

Since the pioneering work by Granger (1969), many authors have proposed tests of causality between economic time series. Most of them are concerned only with “linear causality in mean”, or if a series linearly affects the (conditional) mean of the other series. It is no doubt of primary interest, but dependence between series may be nonlinear, and/or not only through the conditional mean. Indeed conditional heteroskedastic models are widely studied recently. The purpose of this paper is to propose a nonparametric test for possibly nonlinear causality. Taking into account that dependence in higher order moments are becoming an important issue especially in financial time series, we also consider a test for causality up to the Kth conditional moment. Statistically, we can also view this test as a nonparametric omitted variable test in time series regression. A desirable property of the test is that it has nontrivial power against T1/2-local alternatives, where T is the sample size. Also, we can form a test statistic accordingly if we have some knowledge on the alternative hypothesis. Furthermore, we show that the test statistic includes most of the omitted variable test statistics as special cases asymptotically. The null asymptotic distribution is not normal, but we can easily calculate the critical regions by simulation. Monte Carlo experiments show that the proposed test has good size and power properties.  相似文献

This paper discusses eight alternative tests of the absence of casual ordering, all of which are asymptotically valid under the null hypothesis in the sense that their limiting size is known. Their behavior under alternatives is compared analytically using the concept of approximate slope, and these results are supported by the outcomes of Monte Carlo experiments. The implications of these comparisons for applied work are unambiguous: Wald variants of a test attributed to Granger, and a lagged dependent variable version of Sim's test introduced in this paper, are equivalent in all relevant respects and are preferred to the other tests discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Testing the assumption of independence between variables is a crucial aspect of spatial data analysis. However, the literature is limited and somewhat confusing. To our knowledge, we can mention only the bivariate generalization of Moran's statistic. This test suffers from several restrictions: it is applicable only to pairs of variables, a weighting matrix and the assumption of linearity are needed; the null hypothesis of the test is not totally clear. Given these limitations, we develop a new non-parametric test, Υ(m), based on symbolic dynamics with better properties. We show that the Υ(m) test can be extended to a multivariate framework, it is robust to departures from linearity, it does not need a weighting matrix and can be adapted to different specifications of the null. The test is consistent, computationally simple and with good size and power, as shown by a Monte Carlo experiment. An application to the case of the productivity of the manufacturing sector in the Ebro Valley illustrates our approach.  相似文献

We construct two classes of smoothed empirical likelihood ratio tests for the conditional independence hypothesis by writing the null hypothesis as an infinite collection of conditional moment restrictions indexed by a nuisance parameter. One class is based on the CDF; another is based on smoother functions. We show that the test statistics are asymptotically normal under the null hypothesis and a sequence of Pitman local alternatives. We also show that the tests possess an asymptotic optimality property in terms of average power. Simulations suggest that the tests are well behaved in finite samples. Applications to some economic and financial time series indicate that our tests reveal some interesting nonlinear causal relations which the traditional linear Granger causality test fails to detect.  相似文献

This study is an attempt to test the hysteresis versus the natural rate hypothesis in unemployment rate using time series data of the Australia covering the period 1978: 2–2010:12. For the analysis, we employed nonlinear as well as different linear tests (with incorporation of endogenously determined structural breaks) of unit root. We found that the Australian unemployment rate is nonlinear process, has a partial unit root and trend reverting. Therefore, we provide support for the structuralist hypothesis. This finding provides the importance of accounting for exogenous shocks in the series and gives support to the shifting natural-rate hypothesis of the Australian unemployment rate.  相似文献

We propose an adaptive empirical likelihood (EL) test for a parametric regression model against a class of alternatives for weakly dependent time series observations. The test is formulated by maximizing a standardized version of the EL statistic over a set of smoothing bandwidths. It is demonstrated that the proposed test is able to distinguish the null hypothesis from a series of local alternatives at an optimal rate.  相似文献

The paper derives the specific form of the exponentially combined likelihood function of two competing multivariate non-linear regression models and shows that the application of the comprehensive approach to testing non-nested regression models will, in general, be indeterminate. It establishes that in the univariate case there exists a large number of tests of non-nested regression models which are consistent in addition to having the same asymptotic distribution under the null hypothesis. The paper then derives a set of conditions under which all these consistent tests are asymptotically equivalent not only under the null hypothesis but also under local alternatives. As an application of this latter result the paper establishes the asymptotic equivalence of the tests recently proposed by Davidson and MacKinnon, and Fisher and McAleer under local alternatives, and shows that within the class of tests considered in the paper these proposed tests possess maximum local power. The latter test has this property only when the number of explanatory variables of the ‘true’ model is not more than that of the ‘false’ model.  相似文献

The generalized smooth transition autoregression (GSTAR) parametrizes the joint asymmetry in the duration and length of cycles in macroeconomic time series by using particular generalizations of the logistic function. The symmetric smooth transition and linear autoregressions are nested in the GSTAR. A test for the null hypothesis of dynamic symmetry is presented. Two case studies indicate that dynamic asymmetry is a key feature of the U.S. economy. The GSTAR model beats its competitors for point forecasting, but this superiority becomes less evident for density forecasting and in uncertain forecasting environments.  相似文献

Previous work has highlighted the difficulty of obtaining accurate and economically significant predictions of VIX futures prices. We show that both low prediction errors and a significant amount of profitability can be obtained by using a neural network model to predict VIX futures returns. In particular, we focus on open-to-close returns (OTCRs) and consider intraday trading strategies, taking into account non-lagged exogenous variables that closely reflect the information possessed by traders at the time when they decide to invest. The neural network model with only the most recent exogenous variables (namely, the return on the Indian BSESN index) is superior to an unconstrained specification with ten lagged and coincident regressors, which is actually a form of weak efficiency involving markets of different countries. Moreover, the neural network turns out to be more profitable than either a logistic specification or heterogeneous autoregressive models.  相似文献

We adapt the Bierens (1990) test to the I-regular models of Park and Phillips (2001). Bierens (1990) defines the test hypothesis in terms of a conditional moment condition. Under the null hypothesis, the moment condition holds with probability one. The probability measure used is that induced by the variables in the model, that are assumed to be strictly stationary. Our framework is nonstationary and this approach is not always applicable. We show that the Lebesgue measure can be used instead in a meaningful way. The resultant test is consistent against all I-regular alternatives.  相似文献

We propose a new multivariate constant correlation test based on residuals. This test takes into account the whole correlation matrix instead of the considering merely marginal correlations between bivariate data series. In financial markets, it is unrealistic to assume that the marginal variances are constant. This motivates us to develop a constant correlation test which allows for non-constant marginal variances in multivariate time series. However, when the assumption of constant marginal variances is relaxed, it can be shown that the residual effect leads to nonstandard limit distributions of the test statistics based on residual terms. The critical values of the test statistics are not directly available and we use a bootstrap approximation to obtain the corresponding critical values for the test. We also derive the limit distribution of the test statistics based on residuals under the null hypothesis. Monte Carlo simulations show that the test has appealing size and power properties in finite samples. We also apply our test to the stock returns in Euro Stoxx 50 and integrate the test into a binary segmentation algorithm to detect multiple break points.  相似文献

The joint implication of the consumption Euler equation and cointegration between income and consumption is that savings predict future income declines, the ‘saving for a rainy day’ hypothesis. The empirical relevance of this hypothesis plays a key role in discussions of fiscal policy multipliers, and it holds under the null that the permanent income hypothesis is true. We find little support for this hypothesis using time series data for the 100 largest US Metropolitan Statistical Areas for the period 1980q1–2015q4. Our approach is to test for cointegration and weak exogeneity between income and consumption, and by exploring the direction of Granger causality between the two time series. We find that income more often predicts consumption and saving than the converse. We also give evidence that house price changes played a role in US income and consumption dynamics, before, during and after the Great Recession.  相似文献

In this paper, we concentrate on the case of an exogeneously chosen break date, but entertain the possibility that an incorrect choice is made. In fact, the Perron test statistics considered are invariant to any break in the generating process at the assumed break date. Our results therefore apply equally to the case of a generating process with two breaks, only one of which is specifically accounted for in the analysis. As in Leybourne et al . (1998), we find that a neglected relatively early break can lead to spurious rejections of the unit root null hypothesis. Moreover, for all but one of the tests analyzed, spurious rejections now also arise if a true break occurs relatively soon after the assumed break date.  相似文献

Perron [Perron, P., 1989. The great crash, the oil price shock and the unit root hypothesis. Econometrica 57, 1361–1401] introduced a variety of unit root tests that are valid when a break in the trend function of a time series is present. The motivation was to devise testing procedures that were invariant to the magnitude of the shift in level and/or slope. In particular, if a change is present it is allowed under both the null and alternative hypotheses. This analysis was carried under the assumption of a known break date. The subsequent literature aimed to devise testing procedures valid in the case of an unknown break date. However, in doing so, most of the literature and, in particular the commonly used test of Zivot and Andrews [Zivot, E., Andrews, D.W.K., 1992. Further evidence on the great crash, the oil price shock and the unit root hypothesis. Journal of Business and Economic Statistics 10, 251–270], assumed that if a break occurs, it does so only under the alternative hypothesis of stationarity. This is undesirable since (a) it imposes an asymmetric treatment when allowing for a break, so that the test may reject when the noise is integrated but the trend is changing; (b) if a break is present, this information is not exploited to improve the power of the test. In this paper, we propose a testing procedure that addresses both issues. It allows a break under both the null and alternative hypotheses and, when a break is present, the limit distribution of the test is the same as in the case of a known break date, thereby allowing increased power while maintaining the correct size. Simulation experiments confirm that our procedure offers an improvement over commonly used methods in small samples.  相似文献
