This paper investigates whether fast capacity expansions as a means to narrow cost differentials between a de novo airline entrant and established incumbents helps or hinders the survival of the entrant. Evidence from a longitudinal sample of new entrants in the European passenger airline industry showed that these firms exhibited higher failure risks after rapidly expanding capacity. Further, high product market overlap with an established incumbent reduced the probability of new entrants undertaking such expansions, in turn reducing the probability of failure.  相似文献

Air transport services across the Taiwan Strait are rapidly developing. Taiwanese airlines are therefore facing a critical decision as to whether to expand their scheduled services beyond saturated markets. The Taiwanese government is also concerned regarding airline operators' willingness to enter new markets for next-round negotiations concerning traffic rights. This study proposes an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework for Taiwanese airlines based on a market opportunity analysis (MOA) to evaluate the determinants of potential service expansion. A novel rank pair-wise comparison (RPC) is used to measure the relative weights among determinants. It is found that service provision for Taiwanese merchants is the most vital factor. Flight quotas and allowed time slots also affect airlines' willingness to expand operations. Other determinants depend on the individual airlines' development background and operating size. This study also evaluates twelve airports in mainland China using grey relational analysis (GRA) to rank the entrant priorities for additional scheduled services.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the dynamic changes in carriers' airfares and outputs and computes the change in the consumers' surplus year by year after new Japanese carriers entered thriving routes and started to compete with Japanese full-service airlines. Using unbalanced panel data from 222 routes and carrier specific sample observations, it finds that new carriers discounted airfares significantly as soon as they entered new markets, but two early carriers, Skymark Airlines and AIRDO, which had entered with very low airfares, raised their prices year by year. On the other hand, both All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines responded to the new entrants and lowered their airfares to a much lesser extent than the new entrants did, and their airfare levels remained almost unchanged for at least four years after the first entry. The consumers' surplus increased significantly in the first year of each new entry but gradually decreased as the new entrants raised their airfares.  相似文献

Do the determinants of service and pricing on “regional” routes – linking towns and smaller cities to main trunk routes and/or to each other – differ from the established results from the literature? We study all flights (about 3000) on all regional routes (about 250) with scheduled airline service from one of about 130 regional towns or cities, in regional airline markets in six countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and a sample of three U.S. states which closely resemble the other regions studied. For each flight we have observations on up to five prices offered at different times before flight date. We also have equipment type and social-economic data. Overall, our results give qualified support to the standard gravity model of the extent of service between city pairs, though with two interesting differences: operators on regional routes have greater flexibility in the size of aircraft they can deploy, which results in a finer-grained variability of service offerings and, the presence of competition on regional routes has a large effect on the total supply of seats. We are able to successfully estimate a well-specified airfare model, which shows strong effects of competition on prices, quite substantial intertemporal price discrimination, and interesting differences between regional and main trunk route pricing.  相似文献

This paper presents an airline consumer choice model to analyze value propositions – the benefits delivered to passengers in relation to the fares paid. The model is developed using a study of clientele flying business class, studying three premium start-up airlines Eos, MaxJet and Silverjet that provided business-class-only flights on London–New York routes. Premium airlines were compared to selected rival full-service carriers for sustainability of their business class value propositions, using preference profiles of five target customer groups that comprise the business class passenger population. We find that the three premium start-up airlines were superior in offering some appealing features at reasonable fares that were highly valued by some passengers, although they were unable to replicate some other attractive aspects in the value propositions of the incumbents. This suggests a coexistence of premium entrants and incumbent carriers would have been possible, had the environment they operated in not changed drastically for the worse, before the premium entrants had achieved the financial robustness necessary for survival.  相似文献

The purpose of this research note is to examine whether shocks such as the recent global financial crisis of 2007–2009 had a permanent or transitory effect on tourist arrivals in a developing country – Mauritius. Principally premised on a new nonlinear unit root test, the results show that tourist arrivals are stationary. The implication of these findings is that the shocks inclusive of those induced by the latest credit crunch had a temporary impact on tourism markets in Mauritius.  相似文献

In recent years, the framework of ‘classical’ objective determinants of travel behaviour – such as transport systems, generalised travel costs, life situation and the built environment – has begun to make way for the introduction of subjective elements including attitudes, lifestyles, and location preferences. This paper presents findings from an empirical study of trip distances travelled for three purposes (work, maintenance, leisure). The study was conducted in the region of Cologne, and the analysis is based on structural equation modelling. The results indicate that, in general, neither lifestyles nor location preferences have a strong impact on trip distances, except for leisure activities: here lifestyle has the strongest impact of all variables studied. Maintenance trip distances are significantly affected by the spatial setting in which people live, indicating the relevance of the built environment for this travel segment.  相似文献

Research on big data has highlighted that a crucial element to create value from data is the capability of aligning different stakeholders’ interests. However, it has not yet been investigated empirically how this process of alignment can be realized. We conduct a multiple case study on the two leading platforms involved in the online dissemination of cultural heritage – Europeana and Google Arts & Culture. Our findings reveal that a platform overtakes a rival one when it turns on multiple drivers of value creation in such a way that the drivers contribute to realigning the interests expressed by the stakeholders whose strategic objectives and beliefs were formerly divergent – or simply unrelated – to each other. This capability of realigning different stakeholders’ interests is independent of the level of industry-specific knowledge that the platform orchestrator has. The dynamics we document imply that Google has assumed a system integration role in the cultural ecosystem. This generates new trade-offs for museums in the way they generate value for the tourism industry. The paper enriches our understanding of what strategies digital platforms adopt to create value in big data contexts and provides a base to continue the investigation on other ecosystems driven by big data.  相似文献

A model is proposed that integrates a cost allocation method – the Shapley value – into the optimization of the synchronized consolidation of transportation orders. By balancing each partner’s delivery date changes (when synchronizing) against its allocated profit, it ensures that the operational plan is acceptable by all partners. In comparison to a model that first plans and then divides the costs, this model limits expensive delivery date changes and does not systematically favor a company with a slightly higher cost of change.  相似文献

In Africa, the Yamoussoukro Decision (YD) to date remains the single most important air transport reform policy, the continent-wide implementation of which remains pending. This study employs the Air Liberalisation Index (ALI), developed by the Word Trade Organisation (WTO) Secretariat, to measure the impact of each of the seven quantifiable market access features of South Africa's aviation policy in Africa on air passenger traffic flows. A fixed one-way panel regression technique was applied to panel data, representing five air transport markets: intra-African, the SADC, East African, West African and North African over two time periods (2000–2010; 2006–2010). The results proved to be significant in three markets, intra-African, the SADC and East African and provide new insights into the relationship between air passenger traffic flows and aviation policy in the South African – intra-African and regional contexts.  相似文献

This paper empirically investigates price reactions to the entry of the low-cost carrier Gol Airlines in the Brazilian domestic market in 2001. Given the substantial reduction in unconditional yields of the incumbent airlines on routes actually entered by Gol, we perform an econometric analysis of the determinants of pricing power along with the analysis of the pattern of price reactions by incumbent legacy carriers. Using data from a panel of routes disaggregated at the airline level, we obtain that (i) both airport and route presence are relevant at explaining pricing behavior; (ii) price responses vary significantly according to flight distance and the amount of seats supplied by the entrant, in the sense that the shorter the route, and the more the seats offered by the newcomer, the stronger the price reactions from the incumbents, with significant point estimates in the range 22–26% in yield reduction for routes as short as 350 km (approx. 195 miles). More generally, the results shed light on the impacts of airline deregulation in emerging markets and the issue of localized competitive advantage due to product differentiation in the industry.  相似文献

This paper argues that airport economics is based on the concept of economics as the positive value free science of efficient allocation of scarce resources with given wants, ignoring the approach of economics as a moral science. It assesses critically the results on major policy issues. Although there is strong empirical evidence of natural monopoly of airports, no consensus has emerged. The effects of privatisation have been assessed in terms of cost efficiency, but not in terms of economic welfare and distribution. While airport economics has made theoretical progress, the policy recommendations on single versus dual till are less relevant than those from the older models. Airport expansion is assessed in many cases by economic impact studies instead of cost benefit analysis. Economists applying impact analysis, have contributed to an irrational policy discussion. The role for morals in the management of airports has been neglected, although there is evidence that incentives might backfire. The paper argues that airport economics based on economics as a moral science could improve airport economics, and make its policy recommendations more relevant.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss the role of commercial revenues in the economics of European air navigation service providers (ANSPs) starting with the legal definitions of commercial revenues as contained in the respective European Union legislation. Based on the investigation of European ANSPs annual reports and/or strategic documents, we define the attributes of a new commercial model in the provision of air navigation services (ANS). We provide evidence that several European ANSPs have already implemented all or a majority of the attributes typical for the new commercial model. Discussing demand-side and supply-side drivers which could spur or impede the commercial business of European ANSPs, we assume the commercialisation of European ANSPs will be reinforced in future. Therefore, we design a set of partial indicators which enable us to analyse the role of commercial revenues in the economics of ANSPs.  相似文献

This paper analyses entry deterrence and accommodation by low cost carriers (LCCs) with two games. In the first game two LCCs compete in a horizontal differentiation setting. Results show that the entrant may drive away the incumbent from its original location under certain conditions. In the second game the incumbent is a LCC and the entrant a full service carrier, with vertical differentiation. The incumbent tries to deter or accommodate entry by product proliferation. We find out that the incumbent will only deter entry if it can surpass the entrant’s quality, and that product proliferation is not an accommodating strategy.  相似文献

Netnography, a naturalistic and predominantly unobtrusive technique developed by Kozinets for exploring online contributions, was the centrepiece of this appraisal. The authors argue that netnography could play a valuable role in enhancing our understanding of (a) rapidly changing tourist markets, (b) the growth of new markets and (c) the perspectives of culturally distinctive groups. The analysis of the blogs of Chinese recreational vehicle tourists who had visited Australia was chosen as a case study. In studying an emerging market segment from a rapidly changing and culturally different community, the case represented a key test of the value of the approach in generating insights. Practical steps to employ the method – entrée, data collection, data analysis, data interpretation and member checks – were illustrated. Issues arising from the case study for the application of netnography in tourism research were highlighted. They included the value of the detail inherent in the postings, the attendant ability to consider the material using conceptual schemes, the practicality of getting additional information, the need to fully address ethical concerns and the value of supplementary perspectives. Suggestions for ways to adapt the technique for better information retrieval and interpretation were also provided.  相似文献

Population ageing will give rise to a substantial increase in the numbers of older people in society. Quality of life in old age is related to mobility, although the relationship is not clear, in part because the concept of mobility is not well defined. It is argued that it would be attractive to develop an operational concept of mobility, to allow the measurement of a group of benefits associated with individual movement which extend beyond those normally taken into account in travel and transport economics and modelling. This approach would be particularly worthwhile for investigating the loss of mobility with increasing age and the impact this has on quality of life, and for assessing the impact of measures aimed at enhancing the mobility of older people.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to evaluate the determining factors influencing airline companies to operate international origin-destination (O-D) routes from different Brazilian airports. The results are based on a panel data model and support the assumption that statistically significant explanatory variables stem from gravity factors (GDP and an airport competition measure weighted by distance), hub-and-spoke variables and capacity inputs. We find that a composite variable made up by the airport capacity variables – given by the size of the terminal building and the length of runways – and its domestic connections have a positive effect on airport competitiveness. In conclusion, we find that not only well-known demand-side factors, but also supply-side variables – strategic decisions taken by airport management – matter in attracting international flights.  相似文献

Nonmarket strategy – strategic actions directed at influencing the governmental, legalregulatory, and societal environment of business – is a key factor in an airlines' competitive position yet remains relatively under-analyzed in aviation research. The COVID-19 crisis has created a heightened role for nonmarket strategy and our paper argues that in deciding how to respond to a variety of policy measures introduced by governments, airline executives need to take into account the perceived legitimacy from the flying public of their response to governments. Our paper presents an integrative framework to analyze airlines' nonmarket response to COVID-19 governmental policy measures. Using a two-by-two matrix, we identify key conceptual links between industry's nonmarket response, the health impacts of a given policy measure as well as its economic costs for the airlines. Our study concludes that, unless economic stakes in a given policy measure are high, airlines do not risk active bargaining with governments over the content of that measure. Such bargaining could trigger a delegitimation cascade: a self-reinforcing process in which key stakeholders reassess their view of airlines' conduct and the industry's broader societal impact. Bargaining is pursued when economic impacts of policy measures are high, and in that case, the choice between cooperative and adversarial posture towards the government depends on the health impact of a given policy.  相似文献

The Chinese aviation system is in a period of rapid growth, with significant growth in second tier and emerging cities. Lower density cities could be well served by regional aircraft, either regional jets or turboprops, which offer different qualities and a different future for Chinese aviation. Turboprops offer a high level of fuel efficiency compared with regional jets which may improve the cost economics for carriers and reduce the air quality and climate impacts of a growing aviation system in a region where air quality and greenhouse gas emissions are a serious concern. However, regional jets are known for their superior quality of service and faster travel speeds. We begin with a spatial analysis of existing Chinese short-haul aviation networks and find that turboprops are deployed in limited number and are dispersed throughout the country. Their limited use, however, is not because of their cost economics. For the existing regional jet network we estimate the trade space of fuel and time for the replacement of regional jets with turboprops and find that all regional jet routes in China would generate savings if replaced with turboprops. We next establish future short-haul aviation routes between new and emerging airports and estimate the likelihood that a turboprop will be used. The finding that the most viable turboprop markets are spatially dispersed through the country validates considering turboprop investment at the state-level as a component of the established Chinese aviation sustainability initiative.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to analyse the type of mobilities and subjects that are being promoted and constituted through bike-sharing systems. This is done through an analysis of the bike-sharing system in the city of Lund in Sweden. The analysis utilises Bacchi's What is the Problem Represented to be? framework and develops it through adding a spatial perspective. Departing from a critical velomobilities perspective, we argue that urban transport policies cannot merely be regarded as one specific and delimited reaction to well-defined policy problems. Instead, the ways that BSSs are, described, motivated – but also spatially organised – constitute which mobilities are produced. The analysis is based in an analysis of relevant policy documents, maps and observations. It is concluded that bike sharing is not seen as cycling and is rarely linked to cycling as such, but rather is seen as part of the public transport system. Further, it is concluded that the motivation behind the location of the stations is to facilitate the flow of workers to public transport, and promote attractiveness and tourism, thus constituting a strong belief in a win-win situation between sustainability and growth. Here prioritisation between different values, and the possible tensions between different social and environmental dimensions of sustainability is down-played.  相似文献
