ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to consider an approach to teaching entrepreneurial finance using proverbs. It explores a process framework with teaching strategies that provides prescribed guidelines on the key aspects that assist in teaching using this approach. This article demonstrates that teaching with proverbs creates the construct for linking prior knowledge (proverbs) to new entrepreneurial finance concepts in a meaningful way. It further highlights that entrepreneurial finance education in different regions around the world is most effective for students when it is tailored to the local culture of the region. The authors present five main entrepreneurial finance topics with two to three subheadings, each with proverbs accompanied by their related entrepreneurial finance concept. The article concludes that the use of proverbs in entrepreneurial finance instruction provides several benefits and that proverbs have the potential to become an effective teaching instrument in the fields of entrepreneurship and finance.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the use of Arabic proverbs and quotes for teaching finance courses to Arabic-speaking students who are nonnative speakers of English. The study found that the use of Arabic proverbs and quotes greatly enhances the students’ comprehension of the finance topics covered. Similarly, the study revealed that the use of Arabic proverbs and quotes for Arabic-speaking students in teaching finance courses creates rapport between the student and instructor, thus enhancing learning. Finally, the study confirmed that the use of Arabic proverbs and quotes for Arabic-speaking students in teaching finance courses does not lead to confusion or complicate matters, but enhances comprehension and bolsters retention.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study compares the impact of audience response systems (clickers) on the learning experience and classroom behavior of Chinese and Canadian students. Based on differences in student learning styles, which are rooted in the differences in national cultures, we predict that clicker technology will result in a more positive learning experience, and have more impact on classroom behavior in Chinese students than in Canadian students. Our survey results show that, consistent with the findings of prior studies, both groups of students report a positive experience and improved classroom behavior with the use of clickers. Chinese students report a more positive learning experience, but no difference in classroom behavior changes than Canadian students. This study extends the research on clickers by considering the impact of cultural background and shows classroom technology such as clickers can potentially help mitigate the cultural barriers in international business education.  相似文献

This article compares Chinese students' responses to local Chinese versus American professors, and the effectiveness of the professors' respective teaching techniques. A case study made at a single university in China, which had a joint academic program with the United States, found that Chinese students preferred local Chinese professors to American professors in spite of the students' perception that the American professors' were more highly qualified, and despite the American professors' student-centered teaching styles. The Chinese students consider local Chinese professors to be more effective in teaching and they have higher expectation of the Chinese students than the U.S. professors. This article explores the differences between Chinese and Western teaching styles and proposes approaches needed to guide Chinese students from their familiar teacher-centered classrooms toward accepting a student-centered classroom approach. Recommendations are offered for improving Western ways of educating Chinese students in China.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of a study of classroom performance and student attitudes of (on-site vs. the off-site) students enrolled in a distance education international management program leading to a MBA degree. The program was developed by the McLaren School of Business at the University of San Francisco and involves two large Hong Kong-based Chinese corporations. The off-site students of this distance education took classes at Hong Kong, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou via Tutored-Video Instruction methodology. The students were highly satisfied with the program and its delivery. However, their performance was less than anticipated.  相似文献

Abstract

The objectives of this paper are (1) to review the concept of cultural metaphors, (2) to propose a specific application of cultural metaphors in the teaching of international business concepts and (3) to report two situations in which this application was used. The paper concludes with recommendations for further development of this teaching methodology. The applications involved the exchange of metaphors between students at a French university and students at a university in the United States, in 2001 and 2004, which they had developed to describe their respective cultures. Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe an assessment instrument that college professors can use to identify their own teaching strategies as well as to help their students become more aware of their own learning strategies and motivation for learning. The learning styles of students in two different sections of business-economics courses at Marshall University (MU), Huntington, West Virginia, and Auckland Institute of Technology (AIT), Auckland, New Zealand are determined via the use of the VARK instrument. The information generated by the instrument informs about the general cognitive and motivational characteristics of their students. This information in turn can be used in course planning and teaching. The achievement of college students could be improved by providing instruction in a manner consistent with each student's learning style. The VARK instrument could provide both students and educators in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe with a stimulus for reflection and a change in both learning and teaching methods.  相似文献

SUMMARY

This paper reports the results of a study which examined the use of the Internet as the means by which international business students who were engaged in a collaborative learning project could conduct their interactions at distances of many thousands of miles.

The students were surveyed after completion of the project. The difficulties, which they experienced when using this medium of communication, are reported, as are the positive aspects, which were identified. The survey also identified key areas of suggested improvement for future Internet based collaborative projects.

The paper discusses the results of the study and suggests methods by which Internet based teaching can be improved, as well as areas for further research.  相似文献

Abstract

Given the growing use of virtual interaction in international business activities, business schools must provide students with experiential learning opportunities that prepare them to work in virtual organizations. This paper uses multiple case study methodology with analysis at the transaction level to analyze the dynamics of the virtual teams, and to compare international and domestic virtual team behavior. The paper also identifies the challenges of implementing international virtual teams for teaching international business and provides practical advice for faculty.  相似文献

Credit card companies aggressively solicit college students, without regardfor the consequences of high credit car debt for these customers. Theethical conflict of the sale of easy credit to college students too oftenresults in hazardous outcomes akin to the solicitation of youth by cigarettecompanies. This paper will investigate the dangers that credit card use presents to theyoung customer, the unethical manner in which the companies that issue these cards promote their products to this audience, and the role of institutions of higher education. A majority of students are not only using credit unwisely (average balances of over $1000 regardless of who reports the data) but are payingexorbitant interest (18%–22%). The credit card companies call this``responsible' use. They are collecting enough interest and fees to morethan cover losses resulting from bankruptcy. They use a variety ofmarketing techniques to lure college students – glitzy `MTV' type shows,free prizes and gifts, special interest rate offers, and now they can pretendthrough `educational services' to explain to college students why credit cards are important.This paper investigates the ethical considerations of credit card solicitationof college students as a result of research into factors that influence thenumber of credit cards held by these students. Outcome‐based education is a pedagogical process which focuses on the achievement of certain specified results. Outcome‐based teaching and learning (OBTL), therefore, is concerned with curriculum design and ensuring that the contents, delivery, activities, and assessments are all aligned to help facilitate students to attain specific intended learning outcomes. This study explores whether and how outcome‐based teaching impacts on the learning approaches of one cohort of undergraduate business students at a university in Hong Kong, China to undergo outcome‐based teaching, newly introduced as part of a university‐wide policy to adopt OBTL. The learning approaches of these business students were measured using John Biggs's (1987 Biggs, J. 1987. Student approaches to learning and studying, Melbourne: Australian Council for Educational Research.  [Google Scholar]) Study Process Questionnaire (SPQ) to determine whether these students tended to favor surface learning approaches, deep learning approaches, or achieving learning approaches upon initial entry into the university. Changes in learning approaches were tracked, after a semester's exposure to OBTL, through survey and focus group interview methods. Findings indicated a significant amount of transference between learning approaches deployed by these students, demonstrating a high level of adaptability.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and attitude of university students towards mobile phone use while driving. The present study was conducted at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Five hundred and ninety-three participants were recruited for this study. Attitude, consequences and their involvement in various reckless behaviours pertaining to the use of mobile phone while driving were checked by a questionnaire. Overall, the majority of the respondents (90%) use a mobile phone while driving. About half of the participants had experienced consequences regarding texting while driving and had engaged in reckless behaviour. The majority of the students of Faculty of Medicine, Engineering Sciences, Earth Sciences, Administration and Economics and Orientation Classes were more frequently texting while driving (p < .001). The unmarried students were more often texting while driving as compared to married (p < .001). Overall, the majority of the respondents use the mobile phone while driving.  相似文献

Issues of finance and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries have dominated the research agenda at various policy levels. However, very little empirical analysis, that is, hypothesis testing has been carried out to ascertain the relationship between finance and enterprise performance. Although a few studies have attempted to examine this relationship, yet there remain large gaps in our knowledge concerning the relationship between finance and SME development. Abstract

This paper proposes that literature (e.g., short stories, folktales, etc.) may be a valuable tool in helping to adapt teaching methods to the online environment, particularly in the case of developing experiential exercises that are compatible with either synchronous or asynchronous online learning. In addition, literature can help students to become better international managers, and builds skills valued by curriculum experts and future employers, including communication skills, team building skills, and contextual understanding of cultural diversity issues. ABSTRACT

The question of what defines a teaching role has long been a catalyst for dialogue and debate among practitioners in the service-learning community. The success of the service-learning model relies on a reciprocal exchange in the dynamic and ever changing communities in which we serve, where shared ownership, mutual respect, and a consistent exchange among various participants facilitates learning outcomes.

Through partnership with community agencies, students, faculty, and staff, we have begun to answer the question of who teaches whom in the service-learning environment. This article documents how relationship where community partners grow deeper, student roles expand and we broaden the pedagogical impressions of what defines a teacher.

Through a qualitative review of programs and courses, with insights of participants, we will demonstrate how the community-university partnerships fosters a critical exchange for all involved, including participants, community, and institution. The innovative nature of the service-learning instructional environment modifies the dynamics of classroom, causing the roles for learners to vary and the teaching role to change.  相似文献

Abstract

The culturally diverse classroom would seem to be the ideal resource that educators can tap to develop their students' cross-cultural competence and bridge different cultures. However, evidence from the education literature suggests that students typically do not benefit from classroom diversity and that, in general, there is a lack of cross-cultural interactions between different cultural groups on campus. In this paper, we provide an integrated framework for developing students' cross-cultural competence by drawing on the cultural diversity in the classroom. The framework incorporates established and frequently used strategies for developing cross-cultural competence, as well as additional strategies that we have devised (such as diversity audits, self-awareness and ‘other’-awareness tools, student-generated cases and virtual linkages). We explain how this approach uses cultural diversity inherent in the classroom as a basis for students' awareness and understanding of cultural differences, knowledge of other cultures and the application of skills.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a teaching model which provides an analytical framework that encourages students to think about economic events in a global context. It ties the international credit and foreign exchange markets together and shows how international capital flows represent the crucial linkage between them. This model is primarily a teaching tool which illustrates how changes in monetary and fiscal policies in one country, say Japan, impact world interest rates, exchange rates, and trade and capital imbalances for other countries. This approach can also be used to illustrate the impacts of changes in savings and investment behavior by businesses and households, as well as central bank interventions.  相似文献
