Consumer definitions of and demand for locally produced meat were collected via an online survey of 625 U.S. residents. Consumer choice experiments were utilised to elicit willingness to pay for locally produced chicken breasts and pork chops. Younger respondents, respondents without a college degree, participants in hunting and fishing and those who have altered their total meat consumption in the past 3 years due to food safety or animal welfare concerns more frequently report that local food is produced within 10 or 20 miles of their home. Results indicate that respondents are willing to pay a positive amount (at the mean) for verified local production of chicken breasts but not pork chops. 相似文献

This study builds upon previous research by assessing the magnitude and incidence of experimentally-determined deceptive advertising decisions in supermarket advertisements. Previous research reveals willingness‐to‐pay (WTP) obtained through consumer surveys and experiments is often influenced by arbitrary information that, from a normative perspective, should have no influence on WTP. This article utilizes data collected from a split‐sample online survey to determine whether the bias induced from arbitrary anchors can be mitigated with a preference elicitation approach designed to facilitate the preference‐discovery process by revealing tradeoffs and consequences implied by stated WTP. The approach forces internal consistency between statements of value and preference orderings. We compare the WTP elicited using the new approach to two more simplified elicitation devices by determining sensitivity to an arbitrary anchor and by determining predictive validity relative to a holdout choice. Our results indicate that the imposition of internal consistency yields more stable estimates of WTP; however, there is no evidence to support the hypothesis that the method provides WTP estimates that lead to a higher degree of predictive validity . 相似文献

The study seeks to identify and classify motives for customers leaving when things are good and motives for staying when things are bad. Thus, this study identifies reasons for remaining in a business relationship when not satisfied. These motives are termed Capture Assistants. The study also identifies reasons for leaving a provider when satisfied. These motives are termed Escape Assistants. The critical incident technique was used to gain insights. A total of 219 incidents were classified. The results reveal that Capture Assistants hinder customers from leaving because they manifest themselves as fears of loss. Conversely, Escape Assistants motivate satisfied customers to leave because they promise gains. Managerial implications are outlined. 相似文献

As a result of consumers’ increasing concerns with ethical, environmental, and health issues, sustainable consumption and production have become a popular topic of recent academic research and industry practices. The current study sought to provide in-depth insights into consumers’ views on sustainability by simultaneously examining their environmental and social awareness and behavior, health-conscious lifestyles, and diets; as well as the perceived importance of social and nutrition information on wine labels. Based on empirical data obtained through a web-based survey distributed to consumer panels in three markets – the US, the UK, and Germany – this research segmented wine consumers into four categories: Apathetic Consumers; Health-Conscious Diners; Holistic Perfectionists; and Ethical Advocates. The findings indicate that in general wine consumers are mindful about the environmental problems, social responsibility of companies, ethically produced and sustainably sourced products. The majority adhere to healthy lifestyles and watch their diets. Nevertheless, with the exception of only one cluster (Holistic Perfectionists), wine consumers do not actively seek social, environmental, or nutritional information on wine labels. This study shows that, at least currently, the preferences for the social factors are unlikely to outweigh dominating traditional wine purchase drivers, such as price, brand, country of origin, and grape variety. Seafood was the first class of foods to fall under the 2002 US regulatory requirements for mandatory country-of-origin labelling
(COOL). If this regulation created benefits for consumers, filling an information void by demanding information that the market
did not, then there should have been an observable response in the demand for seafood. To gauge the impact, we examined markets
most likely to respond. We estimated retail demand for shrimp, seafood that in the USA is largely sourced from Southeast Asia
and has a history of raising food safety concerns. Our estimated demand systems included standard variables consistent with
economic theory—price and expenditure changes, ongoing trends, and seasonality in consumption patterns. The demand systems
also accounted for regulations that required country-of-origin labels for some, but not all, foods prior to COOL. Data came
from a nationally representative panel of households that record retail food purchases, allowing us to construct relatively
high-frequency market data suitable for testing for the presence of even short-lived impacts. Household demographic information
allowed us to separately estimate demands by consumers most likely to respond to label information. The demand systems yielded
reasonable price and expenditure elasticity estimates, but none of the variables related to COOL revealed evidence of an impact. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to investigate purchase intent in online marketplaces as an international phenomenon. A profile of the international online consumer is established, taking into account factors such as indicators of socio-economic development of their home countries. A structural model is analyzed using LISREL, testing the importance of CSR, the propensity to buy from international online vendors and commitment with purchase intent as the dependent variable. A cross-national dataset of 804 respondents from 57 countries is analyzed, showing that CSR activities alone do not increase purchasing intent, but they do when mediated by commitment. 相似文献

Questions have emerged recently about the appropriateness of defining disadvantaged consumers based on their membership in certain demographic categories, such as income, age, education, and race. This study assessed whether these traditional classifications are useful for understanding consumer complaining behavior with the Better Business Bureau. Results of analysis of more than 24,000 consumer complaints filed with a local BBB office during a 13-year period do not provide consistent support for this disadvantaged consumer perspective. Instead, the emerging vulnerable consumer perspective may provide a more promising basis for future research. 相似文献

With the availability of online creative tools, consumers create ad-like communications on their own or in response to company contests. These consumer-generated ads (CGA) are like word-of-mouth (WOM) in that they are consumer-to-consumer communications, yet they have the look and feel of traditional advertising. We examine consumer responses to both contest and unsolicited CGA and company ads using data gathered from consumers via netnography and depth interviews. Content analysis is used to compare the three ad types and reveals that the contest rules frame CGA so that they resemble company ads while unsolicited CGA differ from both ad types. Findings show that consumers respond to both types of CGA by engaging with the ad rather than the brand, much like an ad critic, while company ads elicit brand associations. Unsolicited CGA are seen as authentic, but not credible, while contest ads are seen as credible, but not authentic, revealing a boundary condition to the conventional view that authenticity leads to credibility. 相似文献

Drawing upon social capital theory and psychosocial development theory, this paper argues that a true buyer–seller relationship is a key determinant of favorable consumer behaviors for adolescent consumers of hairstylist services. Other important determinants include quality of the service delivery process (i.e., service quality as measured by the five SERVQUAL factors) and quality of the core service (in this case, the hairstylist's expertise). A survey of 350 adolescent consumers confirms these predictions. It shows that a true interpersonal relationship negatively moderates the positive effects of service quality on consumer satisfaction with, and overall assessment of the hairstylist. This negative moderating effect is labeled resource substitution benefit and the argument made that this is the fourth social capital benefit. ABSTRACTThe demand for organic products has rapidly expanded worldwide in recent years. However, the organic market remains a niche market in most countries, and research in this area remains limited. Further investigation is necessary to better understand consumer perceptions about organic food and the circumstances in which they are willing to purchase organic food. Accordingly, the authors seek to understand the perceived value that consumers associate with organic food and the factors that impact their willingness to purchase organic food. This study is exploratory in nature and uses a qualitative approach through the use of in-depth interviews. Findings from the study suggest that consumers who perceive a positive value with regard to organic food are more willing to purchase organic food, in which health was the primary perceived benefit. For consumers who perceive a negative value with regard to organic food, they are less willing to purchase organic food. Many did not see any difference between organic food and nonorganic food. Instead, they viewed the prices of organic food as being expensive and argued that more efforts are needed on their part to source for organic food. Are Consumers Really Bewildered by Overchoice? An Experimental Approach to the Tyranny of “Too Much”

Conventional wisdom advocates that consumers love choice. But just how much? This study delves into this subject by considering the cognitive factors that underpin the consumer’s reaction to plentiful assortment on the shelf, but which may cause “analysis paralysis” and indecision. In an attempt to investigate the above, this study adopts an experimental approach to ascertain what occurs when consumers are faced with a multitude of options within the product category of red wine. The results suggest that if executed correctly, retailers can effectively reduce assortment in such a manner that does not negatively impact perceptions of choice, but does indeed reduce the cost incurred when consumers are forced to weigh up options against each other. Of particular interest, the study finds that product knowledge and experience also has a material effect on the outcome of these endeavors. Hence, both product category familiarity and the nature of the consumer should be factored into the strategic thinking of how a retailer can optimize the merchandise assortment displayed to the customer. 相似文献

Some retailers offer price match guarantees, whereas others offer guarantees making the same promise but labeling these low-price guarantees. Do consumers respond differently to these different price guarantee labels? To address this research question, this paper leverages insights from pricing, signaling, and regulatory focus theories to demonstrate – across multiple studies – that consumers perceive price match versus low price guarantees differently. In turn, contingent on consumers’ regulatory focus, this difference in perceptions feeds forward and influences consumers’ purchase intentions and post purchase (e.g., repurchase) intentions. This paper contributes to theory, not only by showing differences across price match versus low price guarantees, but also by being the first to jointly examine purchase and post purchase intentions relating to price guarantees. This paper also speaks to practice, noting contingencies that determine whether the price match or the low-price guarantee label should be used. 相似文献

Prior research has examined several ethical questions related to executive compensation. The issues that have received most
attention are whether executives’ pay is fair and justified by performance. Since more recent studies show that stock options
grants constitute the single largest component in executive compensation, we examine the relations of these grants to economic
determinants and corporate governance for firms in the stagnant stage of their lifecycle. We find that, on average, stock
options grants comprise a significant portion of annual CEO compensation (26.4%) for stagnant firms. We also find that economic
(corporate governance) factors explain less (or more) of the cross-sectional variation in stock options grants for stagnant
firms than for growth firms. Furthermore, we document lower pay-performance sensitivity (i.e., weaker incentive alignment)
and no improvement in future firm performance from past stock options grants to CEOs of stagnant firms. In particular, our
study provides empirical evidence on some inefficiencies associated with stock options grants to CEOs of low potential (stagnant)
firms, a long-standing concern of business ethics researchers (Moriarty, 2005; Nichols and Subramaniam, 2001; Perel, 2003). Our results also provide support for the corporate governance reforms discussed in Matsumura and Shin (2005), especially those proposed provisions that curtail the power of CEOs in the governance of firms. 相似文献

This paper analyses one of the business case arguments for social responsibility: that corporate social responsibility plans
are rewarded by consumers. This paper explores the ability of consumers to buy responsibly, identifies the main obstacles
for responsible consumption, and suggests conditions for it to work. The review of previous studies leads us to conclude that
consuming responsibly is seen as a time consuming activity, economically disadvantageous, and stressful. The main thesis of
this paper is that unless market failures are corrected, consumers will not be able to buy responsibly, and therefore, market
incentives for CSR are seriously threatened.
