In spite of extensive study and efforts to improve business ethics and increase corporate social responsibility, a quick review of almost any business publication will show that breaches of ethics are a common occurrence in the business community. In this paper we explore reasons for potential discrepancies or gaps between organizational and individual ethical standards, the consequences of such discrepancies, and possible methods of reducing the detrimental effects of these differences. The concept of self-leadership, as constructed through social learning theory is examined, and shown to be a potentially valuable tool for employees' use in making reasoned decisions in varying organizational ethical climates. Specifically, the authors will show how the practice of self-leadership can be employed as an important means to improve moral action within the firm. 相似文献

Leadership which lacks ethical conduct can be dangerous, destructive, and even toxic. Ethical leadership, though well discussed
in the literature, has been tested empirically as a construct in very few studies. An empirical investigation of ethical leadership
in Singapore’s construction industry is reported. It is found that ethical leadership is positively and significantly associated
with transformational leadership, transformational culture of organization, contingent reward dimension of transactional leadership,
leader effectiveness, employee willingness to put in extra effort, and employee satisfaction with the leader. However, it
is also found that ethical leadership bears no correlations with transactional leadership. Also, it is negatively correlated
with laissez-faire leadership and transactional culture of the organization. The findings also reveal that ethical leadership
plays a mediating role in the relationship between employee outcomes and organizational culture. Practical implications of
these findings are discussed. Directions for future research are also suggested. 相似文献

This study empirically examined the effects of ethical leadership and ethical climate on employee ethical behavior in the international port context using survey data collected from 128 respondents who worked in Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) in Taiwan. Research hypotheses were formulated from the previous literature and tested using structural equation modeling. Results indicated that ethical leadership had a significant impact on ethical climate and the ethical behavior of TIPC employees. Ethical climate was found to be positively associated with employee ethical behavior. The theoretical and practical implications of the research findings are discussed. 相似文献

This article critically evaluates current developments in marketing fair trade labelled products and “no sweat” manufactured
goods, and argues that both the fair trade and ethical trade movements increasingly rely on strategies for bottom-up change,
converting consumers “one cup at a time”. This individualistic approach, which we call “shopping for a better world”, must,
we argue, be augmented by more collectivist approaches to affect transformative change. Specifically, we look at the concept
of mission-driven organizations pursuing leadership roles in developing affinity relationships to promote fair and ethical
trade and developing ethical spaces. Increasingly, a range of organizations are restructuring their operations, so that their
mission is reflected in ethical practices throughout their operations, including product sourcing and product sales. First,
ethical purchasing policies operated by non-profits and public agencies represent markets through which fair/ethical products
reach end consumers. The efforts discussed to create ethical spaces through direct democracy and electoral mandate build on
a broad-based affinity with the principles of fair and ethical trade. Second, we explore the potential for “mission-driven”
non-profit organizations, such as zoos and aquaria for merging their mission of conservation education with their marketing
activities through the operation of their shops and cafés. Interesting initiatives to link the conservation message to food
choices is being undertaken by a number of zoos and aquaria, while there is scope for increased linkages in the giftware sold
in their shops. 相似文献

The primary purpose of this study was to explore the unique impact of individual differences (e.g. gender, managerial experience), social culture, ethical leadership, and ethical climate on the manner in which individuals analyse and interpret an organisational scenario. Furthermore, we sought to explore whether the manner in which a scenario is initially interpreted by respondents (i.e. as a legal issue, ethical issue, and/or ethical dilemma) influenced subsequent recognition of the relevant stakeholders involved and the identification of intra- and extra-organisational variables significant to the scenario depicted. Data for this study were anonymously collected from professional samples in Russia (Moscow region) and in New Zealand. Findings show a strong effect of social culture (i.e. working in New Zealand or working in Russia) on the manner in which respondents characterised the scenario, on the experience of ethical climate and ethical leadership in their organisations, and on the ability to identify intra- and extra-organisational variables responsible for the situation presented in the scenario, above and beyond other individual and contextual factors. 相似文献

Ethical leadership has become a thriving research field. However, on reviewing previous research, we argue that several fundamental questions remain unclear and need further investigation. (1) Ethical leaders are defined as behaving ‘normatively appropriate[ly]’ (Brown et al., Organ Behav Hum Decis Process 97(2):117–134, 2005), but it remains unclear what this entails. What specific behaviours does an ethical leader show? (2) To date, ethical leadership has focused primarily on leader behaviour towards employees. Which stakeholders apart from employees are important to the ethical leader, and what kind of ethical behaviour does the ethical leader show towards them? (3) What are further antecedents and consequences of ethical leadership? We addressed these questions by qualitatively analysing interviews with 17, mostly Swiss, executive ethical leaders. The results indicate that executive ethical leaders care not only about employees but also about other stakeholders, such as customers, suppliers, owners of companies, the natural environment and society. Additionally, this study identified a broad range of executive ethical leaders’ behaviours towards these stakeholders, and, therefore, may function as a useful resource for future quantitative studies. Furthermore, we identified several antecedents of executive ethical leadership, for example ethical role models, business strategy and owner’s values, and consequences such as effects on other stakeholders than employees. Finally, our results shed more light on the processes of ethical guidance of employees. Managerial implications and avenues for further research are discussed. 相似文献

Recent ethical misconduct in American business has resulted in volumes of written commentary, various legislative responses,
as well as litigation by those identified as victims. While legislators, judges, juries, and the Securities and Exchange Commission
(SEC) pursue an increasing number of cases, there is little attention devoted to understanding what drives executives and
other leaders to behave in ways that violate the ethical and legal standards of business in the United States. This understanding
is a prerequisite to selecting leaders and designing interventions that prevent future misconduct. Understanding leadership’s
nature and functioning is one key to understanding the ethical behavior of an organization as a system and of the people who
lead the organization. Two models or frameworks provide the foundation for this paper. The first is a model of leadership
competencies. This model identifies five key areas of competence related to overall, long-term leadership success. The second
model targets leadership effectiveness. This model has three components – motivational patterns, decision criteria, and competencies.
Using the Leadership Effectiveness Model to frame the discussion, the authors describe the nature and importance of the models,
with particular focus on motivational patterns. Research suggests these patterns often account for 40–60% of overall leadership
effectiveness. This article defines motivational patterns and describes key patterns that may impact ethical behavior of leaders.
The article concludes with a discussion of how to use data on motivational patterns in leadership selection, development,
and evaluation processes.

The study of ethical leadership has emerged as an important topic for understanding the effects of leadership in organizations.
In a study with 845 working adults across multiple organizations, the relationships between ethical leadership with positive
employee outcomes were examined. Results suggest that ethical leadership is related to both psychological well-being and job
satisfaction in employees, but the processes are different. Employee voice mediated the relationship between ethical leadership
and psychological well-being. Feelings of psychological ownership mediated the relationship between ethical leadership and
job satisfaction. A discussion of theoretical and practical implications concludes the article. 相似文献

Creative frontline service employees may be crucial in ensuring organizational performance. However, scant research has investigated the antecedents of service employee creativity. This research applies Role Theory to enlighten this issue. The findings reveal that: role conflict and role ambiguity have opposing effects on creativity; Role Theory complements Cognitive Evaluation Theory as a mediational mechanism for the influence of contextual factors on creativity; and, against current thinking, contextual factors also affect creativity directly. The results underscore the need to reconceptualize the mechanisms by which contextual factors influence creativity, and suggest how managers can promote creativity through the work environment. 相似文献

Despite the reasonable explanatory power of existing models of consumers’ ethical decision making, a large part of the process remains unexplained. This article draws on previous research and proposes an integrated model that includes measures of the theory of planned behavior, personal norms, self-identity, neutralization, past experience, and attitudinal ambivalence. We postulate and test a variety of direct and moderating effects in the context of a large scale survey study in London, UK. Overall, the resulting model represents an empirically robust and holistic attempt to identify the most important determinants of consumers’ support for the fair-trade movement. Implications and avenues for further research are discussed. 相似文献

In recent years, scholars have sought to investigate the impact that ethical leaders can have within organisations. Yet, only a few theoretical perspectives have been adopted to explain how ethical leaders influence subordinate outcomes. This study therefore draws on social rules theory (SRT) to extend our understanding of the mechanisms linking ethical leadership to employee attitudes. We argue that ethical leaders reduce disengagement, which in turn promotes higher levels of job satisfaction and organisational commitment, as well as lower turnover intentions. Co-worker social undermining is examined as a moderator of the relationship between ethical leadership and disengagement, as we suggest that it is difficult for ethical leaders to be effective when co-worker undermining prevails. To test the proposed model, questionnaires were administered to 460 nurses in Romanian hospital settings over three time points separated by two-week intervals and the hypotheses were tested using generalised multilevel structural equation modeling (GSEM) with STATA. The findings revealed that ethical leadership has a beneficial effect on employee attitudes by reducing disengagement. However, the relationship between ethical leadership and disengagement was moderated by co-worker social undermining, such that when undermining was higher, the significance of the mediated relationships disappeared. These results suggest that while ethical leaders can promote positive employee attitudes, their effectiveness is reduced in situations where co-worker undermining exists. 相似文献

Drawing on the work–family enrichment theory, the present study investigates the cross-domain effects of ethical leadership on employees’ family and life satisfaction. Moreover, it focuses on the mediating role of work–family enrichment (WFE) and the moderated mediation process of family-supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSB) underlying the relationship between ethical leadership and employees’ family and life satisfaction. Using a sample of 371 employees and their immediate supervisors in China, we found that WFE mediated the relationship between ethical leadership and employee-rated and supervisor-rated family and life satisfaction. Moreover, FSSB positively moderated the relationship between ethical leadership and WFE, such that the relationship was strengthened when FSSB were higher. Furthermore, the mediations of WFE between ethical leadership and employee-rated and supervisor-rated family and life satisfaction were also positively moderated by FSSB, such that the indirect effects were stronger when FSSB were higher. The theoretical and managerial implications of our findings are further discussed. 相似文献

Communicating ethical values is a serious issue for a number of organizations. While ethical codes are useful, they cannot exist alone. Organizations must make certain codes reflect the ideals of individuals in the organization and the ethical expectations must be clearly communicated. This study examined the sources (people) and channels (ways messages were received) that affected how employees learned about ethics. Results showed that training and orientation programs were affirmed as sources of learning along with teaching others. Codes and handbooks were also identified as ways employees learned about ethics in their organization. Ethical issues were discussed more frequently with fellow employees than with supervisors suggesting that managers could be more proactive about discussing ethics with employees. 相似文献

The popular press is often fraught with high-profile illustrations of leader unethical conduct within corporations. Leader unethical conduct is undesirable for many reasons, but in terms of managing subordinates, it is particularly problematic because leaders directly influence the ethics of their followers. Yet, we know relatively little about why leaders fail to apply ethical leadership practices. We argue that some leaders cognitively remove the personal sanctions associated with misconduct, which provides them with the “freedom” to ignore ethical shortcomings. Drawing on moral disengagement theory (Bandura 1986, 1999), we examine the relationship between supervisor moral disengagement and employee perceptions of ethical leadership. We then examine the moderating role of employee moral disengagement, such that the negative relationship between supervisor moral disengagement and employee perceptions of ethical leadership is stronger when employee moral disengagement is low versus high. Finally, we examine ethical leadership as a conditional mediator (based on employee moral disengagement) that explains that relationship between supervisor moral disengagement and employee job performance and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Results from a multi-source field survey provide general support for our theoretical model. 相似文献

This study investigates the psychological process of how authentic leadership affects employee voice behaviors. The theoretical model of this study proposes that employee positive mood and leader–member exchange (LMX) quality mediate the relationship between authentic leadership and voice behavior, while the procedural justice climate moderates the mediation effects of positive mood and LMX quality. Multi-level data from 70 workgroups of a real estate agent company in Taiwan support all hypotheses. This study reveals the cross-level effects of authentic leadership, and provides practical suggestions to help employees express their opinions in organizations. 相似文献
