Purpose: The authors argue that (1) marketing strategy should focus more on where to compete (rather than on how to compete); (2) making subjective market definitions or market innovations may be the key to growth; and (3) a starting point for business marketers wishing to outgrow their competitors is to increase the granularity of market definition to identify competitive arenas that are growing. The authors illustrate the use of morphological analysis for competitive arena mapping in a market definition and innovation context.

Methodology: Using action research, involving a group of twleve firms of various sizes from different industries over a period of three-and-a-half years, we applied morphological analysis in a competitive arena mapping procedure, which enables firms to systematically plot possible competitive arenas and use managerial judgment to select those which are growing and for which the firm has exploitation capabilities.

Findings: Competitive arena mapping allows firms to identify and investigate a large set of possible competitive arena configurations. The developed mapping method has certain characteristics: (1) it specifically focuses on the market boundaries and adjacencies, (2) it incorporates both exchange value and use value, and (3) it acts as a learning process that accelerates the practical application of the arenas in business strategy and practice.

Contribution: The article builds a bridge between the market definition literature in strategic management and the industrial market segmentation literature, by introducing a novel method for increasing the granularity of market definition, using morphological analysis. Furthermore, the paper responds to the lack of research addressing strategic segmentation processes by developing a six-step market definition process.  相似文献

建立完善的中小企业征信体系是解决银企之间信息不对称的有效途径。本文以第三方征信机构的服务模式为研究视角,构建征信机构、商业银行与中小企业三方之间的动态博弈模型,讨论第三方征信服务的作用及不同政策目标下征信机构的运行模式选择问题。结果表明:(1)引入征信机构服务会提高中小企业信贷市场的效率——市场贷款利率降低、信贷发放总量增加,但征信机构不同服务模式对信贷市场效率的影响程度不同。(2)征信机构最优的服务模式因不同政策目标而异,在征信机构利润最大化目标下,其仅向中小银行提供信用信息;在借款企业剩余最大化目标下,将同时向大型银行和中小银行提供信用信息;在社会福利最大化目标下,将根据银行贷款门槛的差异程度而定。现阶段我国征信体系建设的政策目标是借款企业剩余最大化和社会福利最大化,征信机构应选择第三种即向所有银行都开放有偿信息服务;未来随着征信服务业的成熟、市场的发展,民营征信机构成为体系的主体,利润最大化将成为主要政策目标,征信机构可采取第三种即仅向中小银行提供中小企业信用信息。  相似文献

根据政府采购法的规定,政府采购要贯彻公平竞争的原则,保证提供一个充分竞争的采购市场环境,被称之为政府采购中的竞争政策;同时,政府采购作为政府支出的一种方式,是国家宏观调控的主要手段之一,所以在政府采购法中又规定了,政府采购要保证民族企业的发展,不使其在强大的外国竞争者冲击下破产,被称之为政府采购中的保护政策。这样,当面对国内外供应商的竞争,如何确定政府采购目标的问题,就转化成了如何处理竞争原则和保护政策两者关系的问题。然而,无论政府采购运用哪一种政策其根本目的都是为了提高国内企业的竞争力,增强国家经济实力,所以这就有必要对政府采购中的竞争政策和保护政策进行经济学分析。  相似文献

Recent models of firm failure and growth have ignored demand factors. In this paper, we generalize these theoretical analyses to include demand factors in explaining failure and growth for heterogeneous firms in local markets facing imperfect but increasing competition. The model is then applied empirically to the hospital industry in California over the 1980s, during which time competition did intensify. We model the closure decision based on expectations of future growth, explicitly accounting for self selection and simultaneity. 通过对中国三大期货市场的铜、黄豆和小麦三种主要期货品种收益率的分布与波动性的实证分析 ,论证了其时间序列存在ARCH效应 ;运用GARCH模型对这三种期货品种进行了拟合分析和统计检验 ,检验结果表明这三个期货品种的波动性均具有很高的持续性 ,但大连黄豆的波动持续性弱于上海铜和郑州小麦 ,其波动性受各种外部冲击的影响较大 ;通过GARCH( 1 ,1 )的市场有效性检验 ,论证了中国期货市场尚未达到弱式有效 ,市场风险较大。  相似文献

This paper describes a flaw in the teaching of issues related to market economics and social justice at American institutions of higher learning. The flaw we speak of is really a gap, or an educational disconnect, which exists between those faculty who support market-based economies and those who believe capitalism promotes economic injustice. The thesis of this paper is that the gap is so wide and the ideas that are promoted are so disconnected that students are trapped into choosing one or the other position (or neither) and are left unable to link the two sides of the discussion. Such an educational process is not one that produces free and reasoned discernment. In this paper, we briefly relate how we came to be aware of the disconnect and its harms. We present evidence that a pedagogical gulf exists within the teaching of markets and capitalism at American universities – faculty interviews, course syllabi, portions of the corpus of material generally referred to as Catholic Social Thought, as well as references to traditional, mainstream economic theory. Further, we give evidence of the confusion and frustration among students this gulf causes. We suggest possible reasons for the gulf–primarily through an investigation of the differences in underlying assumptions and misperceptions that exist between two divisions within universities. We conclude by suggesting a set of curricular changes designed to improve teaching. The authors’ aim is not to change people’s minds. It is to change their teaching. The authors believe that these curricular changes will leave students less frustrated and better prepared for a life of significant service – with improved critical thinking skills.David F. Carrithers is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Finance in the Albers School of Business & Economics at Seattle University. He has taught at Seattle University since 1985, in the areas of corporate and entrepreneurial finance. Mr. Carrithers earned an MBA from the University of Washington in 1984. Dean Peterson is assistant professor of economics at Seattle University. His research interests focus on the history of economic thought.
