The pharmacist as a drug information supplier in hospitals: A view from services marketing

The aim of this study is to gain insight into how the information supply services of the pharmacist and his or her potential competitors are seen by physicians. In the context of the upcoming professionalization trend of the pharmacist we are interested in determining how the hospital pharmacist can position himself as a drug information supplier and what factors are critical for his or her success. A research framework is presented which explains the selection process and use of personal drug information sources by hospital physicians. Data was collected from a sample of 329 Dutch internists. Overall, subspecialized physicians and supporting medical specialists were perceived as the most important sources of information for internists. The hospital pharmacist was perceived as lacking in expertise in the areas of therapy choice and implementation of the therapy and as being competent in the diagnosis-related cases. Regression analyses showed that technical and process dimensions significantly relate to the overall perceived quality with an information supplier. Pharmacists and others who were perceived as less important sources of information can use the results of this study to strengthen their position.

Activity-based Costing (ABC) and the Life Insurance Industry

This paper describes the concept of activity-based costing (ABC) and examines its relevance to the life insurance industry. The paper contends that the high overheads and diversified product lines of many life insurance companies makes them appropriate environments within which to apply ABC. It is considered that ABC can provide at least three important benefits to a life insurance company, namely: more accurate cost information, closer insights into the costs of production and better information concerning the strategic consequences of business decisions. These attributes can help a life insurance company to achieve important business objectives, such as the management of expenses and the continuous improvement in the quality of its products and services. However; the transition to ABC is not easy and it cannot be seen as a panacea for all corporate woes. Nevertheless, the paper concludes that with sound project management, an ABC system can provide life insurance companies with much better information for activity management and the achievement of longer term strategic goals.     

什么影响了生产者服务业FDI的区域分布——来自美国的经验证据:1985-2006

本文把生产者服务业FDI细分为5类,借助于1985-2006年美国对OECD中24个国家直接投资的面板数据,研究了制造业FDI和其他因素对生产者服务业FDI区域分布的影响。结果表明,除了批发贸易类生产者服务业FDI以外,其他各类生产者服务业FDI在区域分布中均明显具有追逐制造业FDI的倾向。本文的研究同时得出了一些与现有研究不同的结论:生产者服务业FDI的区域分布大多不受东道国市场规模因素与政治环境因素的影响,而且与工资水平呈正相关关系。     

Evolutionary game-theoretic model for dynamic congestion pricing in multi-class traffic networks

This paper describes an evolutionary game-theoretic learning model for dynamic congestion pricing in urban road networks, taking into account route choice stochasticity and reliability considerations, and the heterogeneity of users, in terms of their value of travel time and real-time information acquisition. The learning model represents the dynamic adjustments of users to travel cost changes which may take place in the day-to-day as well as the within-day timescales. The implementation into a simplified and a real urban road network signifies the important implications of modeling the dynamic and stochastic learning components of users’ behavior for accommodating the efficient deployment of congestion pricing schemes.

Economic sentiment shocks and fluctuations in economic activity in the euro area and the USA

Economic sentiment indicators can provide a wealth of information for macroeconomic policy formulation and analysis. Despite this, economic sentiment is often neglected by mainstream economics. This article assesses whether there is a potential role for economic sentiment to amplify business cycle fluctuations. This paper integrates the European Commission Economic Sentiment Indicator data into an econometric analysis of the euro area business cycle. The investigation of the euro area economy suggests that sentiment shocks do have an impact on important macroeconomic variables such as output, retail sales, and unemployment. There is furthermore significant evidence that economic conditions and shocks affect economic sentiment.     

A new methodology for aggregating tables: Summarizing journal quality data

Often successive studies are conducted to rank items across time or across different raters. For instance, different consumers may be asked to rank products, or banks may be ranked at different points of time based on their lending practices. In such cases, a simple model would suggest arriving at a summary set of rankings by averaging across the sets. However, when the rank of an item is missing in some of the sets, a simple mean can produce a biased result. This is because the absence of an item in a particular set may be important information that is being ignored.MacMillan conducted a series of studies to identify a forum for publishing business policy research, the most recent of which appeared in this journal. The design of the study involved two stages of selection: first, the journals were to be voted into a set, and second, they were to be ranked by a panel of scholars. This procedure resulted in some of the journals not appearing in every study. Thus, taking a simple average across the studies would result in misleading information, because the absence of a journal in a particular study is information that is important (because the panel chose not to vote it into consideration) but lost in averaging.One of the objectives of the MacMillan studies was to provide scholars with information about the importance of the journal as a publication outlet. Thus, it is important to be able to arrive at a summary set of rankings to provide cumulative information. To achieve this, a left-censored model was developed. Assuming that the ranks follow a normal distribution, with unknown mean and the same variance, maximum likelihood estimates of the means were calculated.. The summary set of ranks were then calculated using these estimates. The summary ranks were compared with those arrived at from an independent estimate of journal quality and found to have validity.Our model helps enhance the value of the MacMillan studies by providing cumulative information on the journals and facilitating their comparison with other studies. We see the applicability of the model in other areas too. Known by the generic term of league tables, such sets of data are generated in marketing research, educational studies, etc. Thus, the model is an important contribution to the tool kit of empirical research.
