We present a new method for consistent cross‐sectional pricing of all traded bonds in the fixed income market. By applying thin plate regression splines ( Wood, 2003 ) to bootstrapped zero coupon bond yields ( Hagan and West, 2006 ), the method decomposes traded yields into a risk‐free component plus premia for credit and liquidity risks, where the decomposition is consistent with the market valuations and underlying cash flows of the bonds. We apply the framework to end of quarter yield data from 2008 to 2011 on Australian dollar denominated semi‐government, supranational and agency (SSA) bonds, and find that the surface provides an excellent fit to the underlying zero coupon yield curves. Further, the decomposition of selected yield time series and cross‐sections demonstrates how credit premia increased for Australian SSA bonds through the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), but were counterbalanced by liquidity discounts as investors sought safe haven securities. 相似文献

risk, liquidity affects asset prices and returns. Theories of asset pricing suggest that the expected return of an asset is
increasing in its risk, because risk-averse investors require compensation for bearing more risk. Because investors are also
averse to the costs of illiquidity and want to be compensated for bearing them, asset returns are increasing in illiquidity. Thus, asset prices should depend on two asset characteristics: risk and liquidity. This paper surveys research on the effects

Price variations at speculative markets exhibit positive autocorrelationand cross correlation. Due to large parameter spaces necessaryfor joint modeling of variances and covariances, multivariateparametric volatility models become easily intractable in practice.We propose an adaptive procedure that identifies periods ofsecond-order homogeneity for each moment in time. To overcomethe high dimensionality of the problem we transform the multivariateseries into a set of univariate processes. We discuss thoroughlythe implementation of the adaptive technique. Theoretical andMonte Carlo results are given. We provide two applications ofthe new method. For a bivariate exchange rate series we comparethe multivariate GARCH approach with our method and find thelatter to be more in line with the underlying assumption ofindependently distributed innovations. This paper tests the empirical validity of the Ohlson (1995) model on a firm-level time series basis. The coefficients of the earnings dynamic and valuation equations are first estimated by OLS. Next, recognizing the nonlinear relationships among the parameters, each equation is estimated by nonlinear Least Squares. Lastly, the model is estimated as a restricted system by nonlinear Least Squares and nonlinear SUR. In all cases, parameters are endogenously estimated. Irrespective of the estimation method, the Ohlson model often yields inconsistent or insignificant parameter estimates. Nevertheless, point estimates of equity risk premia are similar to those obtained from alternative methodologies. 相似文献

This paper provides evidence that financial development has a large causal effect in the reduction of macroeconomic volatility resulting from the role of the financial system in liquidity provision. In particular, financial system development leads to a comparatively larger reduction in the volatility of output in sectors with high liquidity needs. Most of this decline results from the stabilization of the output of existing firms, although the volatility of the number of firms also drops significantly. Among different aspects of the financial system, the depth of financial intermediaries plays the main role in the reduction of volatility. 相似文献

Parameter estimation and statistical inference are challenging problems for stochastic volatility (SV) models, especially those driven by pure jump Lévy processes. Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is usually preferred when a parametric statistical model is correctly specified, but traditional MLE implementation for SV models is computationally infeasible due to high dimensionality of the integral involved. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a gradient-based simulated MLE method under the hidden Markov structure for SV models, which covers those driven by pure jump Lévy processes. Gradient estimation using characteristic functions and sequential Monte Carlo in the simulation of the hidden states are implemented. Numerical experiments illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method. 相似文献

An extensive collection of continuous-time models of the short-term interest rate is evaluated over data sets that have appeared previously in the literature. The analysis, which uses the simulated maximum likelihood procedure proposed by Durham and Gallant (2002), provides new insights regarding several previously unresolved questions. For single factor models, I find that the volatility, not the drift, is the critical component in model specification. Allowing for additional flexibility beyond a constant term in the drift provides negligible benefit. While constant drift would appear to imply that the short rate is nonstationary, in fact, stationarity is volatility-induced. The simple constant elasticity of volatility model fits weekly observations of the three-month Treasury bill rate remarkably well but is easily rejected when compared with more flexible volatility specifications over daily data. The methodology of Durham and Gallant can also be used to estimate stochastic volatility models. While adding the latent volatility component provides a large improvement in the likelihood for the physical process, it does little to improve bond-pricing performance. 相似文献

This study applies the nonparametric estimation procedure tothe diffusion process modeling the dynamics of short-term interestrates. This approach allows us to operate in continuous time,estimating the continuous-time model, despite the use of discretedata. Three methods are proposed. We apply these methods totwo important financial data. After selecting an appropriatebandwidth for each dataset, empirical comparisons indicate thatthe specification of the drift has a considerable impact onthe pricing of derivatives through its effect on the diffusionfunction. In addition, a novel nonparametric test has been proposedfor specification of linearity in the drift. We examine contemporaneous jumps (cojumps) among individual stocks and a proxy for the market portfolio. We show, through a Monte Carlo study, that using intraday jump tests and a coexceedance criterion to detect cojumps has a power similar to the cojump test proposed by Bollerslev et al. (2008). However, we also show that we should not expect to detect all common jumps comprising a cojump when using such coexceedance based detection methods. Empirically, we provide evidence of an association between jumps in the market portfolio and cojumps in the underlying stocks. Consistent with our Monte Carlo evidence, moderate numbers of stocks are often detected to be involved in these (systematic) cojumps. Importantly, the results suggest that market-level news is able to generate simultaneous large jumps in individual stocks. We also find evidence of an association between systematic cojumps and Federal Funds Target Rate announcements. 相似文献

This paper proposes a unified approximation method for various options whose pay-offs depend on the volume weighted average price (VWAP). Despite their popularity in practice, very few pricing models have been developed in the literature. Also, in previous works, the underlying asset process has been restricted to a geometric Brownian motion. In contrast, our method is applicable to the general class of continuous Markov processes such as local volatility models. Moreover, our method can be used for any type of VWAP options with fixed-strike, floating-strike, continuously sampled, discretely sampled, forward-start and in-progress transactions. 相似文献

This paper investigates whether firm-specific characteristics explain idiosyncratic volatility in the stocks of non-financial firms traded in the Indian stock market. It employs the linear time series five-factor model, augmented with a liquidity factor and the conditional EGARCH model, to extract yearly idiosyncratic volatility. We estimate a panel data regression to quantify the relationship between firm-specific characteristics and the volatility of individual securities. The results show that idiosyncratic volatility is significant in emerging markets such as India, and that cross-sectional return variations of firms are associated with firm-specific characteristics such as firm size, book-to-market ratio, momentum, liquidity, cash flow-to-price ratio, and returns on assets. We find that the idiosyncratic risk documented in this study is associated with smaller size of company, higher liquidity, low momentum, high book-to-market ratio, and low cash flow-to-price ratio. The findings suggest need to develop alternative tools to make investment decisions in emerging markets. 相似文献

The Black–Scholes implied volatility skew at the money of SPX options is known to obey a power law with respect to the time to maturity. We construct a model of the underlying asset price process which is dynamically consistent to the power law. The volatility process of the model is driven by a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter less than half. The fractional Brownian motion is correlated with a Brownian motion which drives the asset price process. We derive an asymptotic expansion of the implied volatility as the time to maturity tends to zero. For this purpose, we introduce a new approach to validate such an expansion, which enables us to treat more general models than in the literature. The local-stochastic volatility model is treated as well under an essentially minimal regularity condition in order to show such a standard model cannot be dynamically consistent to the power law. 相似文献

In this note we examine the behaviour of extreme-value methods in such settings and propose an adaptation of the popular Hill (1975) estimator. Numerous empirical studies find pricing kernels that are not-monotonically decreasing; the findings are at odds with the pricing kernel being marginal utility of a risk-averse, so-called representative agent. We study in detail the common procedure which estimates the pricing kernel as the ratio of two separate density estimations. In the first step, we analyse theoretically the functional dependence for the ratio of a density to its estimated density; this cautions the reader regarding potential computational issues coupled with statistical techniques. In the second step, we study this quantitatively; we show that small sample biases shape the estimated pricing kernel, and that estimated pricing kernels typically violate the commonly believed monotonicity at the centre even when the true pricing kernel fulfils these. This contributes to an alternative, statistical explanation for the puzzling shape in pricing kernel estimations. 相似文献

With the increased acceptance of capital market efficiency, there has been a significant increase in the money managed on an indexed basis. Several methodologies are available to replicate the target index. In this paper, we discuss the problems of (1) defining suitable performance objectives and tracking error that scale properly over the entire management period and (2) implementing an optimal investment strategy when full replication of an index is not deemed suitable. We then argue that clustering might be a viable methodology for building parsimonious tracking portfolios. With suitably defined distances between the time series of asset prices, clustering ‘discovers’ the correlation and cointegration structure of an index. Sampling the clusters with appropriate heuristics and optimization techniques, an optimal tracking portfolio can be constructed. One advantage of this approach is that it eschews the difficulties and computational burden of density forecasts and full optimization. 相似文献

In this paper we analyze the role of macroeconomic and financial determinants in explaining stock market volatilities in the U.S. market. Both implied and realized volatility are computed model-free and decomposed into positive and negative components, thereby allowing us to compute directional volatility risk premia. We capture the behaviour of each component of implied volatility and risk premium in relation to their different determinants. The negative implied volatility appears to be linked more towards financial conditions variables such as uncertainty and geopolitical risk indexes, whereas positive implied volatility is driven more by macro variables such as inflation and GDP. There is a clear shift in importance from macro towards financial determinants moving from the pre towards the post financial crisis. A mixed frequency Granger causality approach uncovers causality relationships between volatilities and risk premia and macro variables and vice versa, a finding which is not detected with a conventional low frequency VAR model. 相似文献

The main purpose of this paper is to examine empirically the time series properties of the French Market Volatility Index (VX1). We also examine the VX1's ability to forecast future realized market volatility and finds a strong relationship. More importantly, we show how the index can be used to generate volatility forecasts over different horizons and that these forecasts are reasonably accurate predictors of future realized volatility. 相似文献

This paper assesses the sources of volatility persistence in Euro Area money market interest rates and the existence of linkages relating volatility dynamics. The main findings of the study are as follows. Firstly, there is evidence of stationary long memory, of similar degree, in all series. Secondly, there is evidence of fractional cointegration relationships relating all series, except the overnight rate. The common long memory factor analysis points to a two-factor volatility curve. The most important factor, in terms of proportion of total variance explained, can be interpreted as a level factor (64% of total variance), while the other as a slope factor (13% of total variance). Impulse response analysis and forecast error variance decomposition finally point to non significant forward transmission of liquidity shocks. 相似文献

This paper demonstrates a tractable and efficient way of calibrating a multiscale exponential Ornstein–Uhlenbeck stochastic volatility model including a correlation between the asset return and its volatility. As opposed to many contributions where this correlation is assumed to be null, this framework allows one to describe the leverage effect widely observed in equity markets. The resulting model is non-exponential and driven by a degenerate noise, thus requiring a high level of care in designing the estimation algorithm. The way this difficulty is overcome provides guidelines concerning the development of an estimation algorithm in a non-standard framework. The authors propose using a block-type expectation maximization algorithm along with particle smoothing. This method results in an accurate calibration process able to identify up to three timescale factors.
