A Simple Way to Reduce Estimation Bias in Some Dynamic Choice Models

This study proposes a simple estimator for dynamic choice models with continuous unobserved heterogeneity, state dependence induced by a first-order Markov process, and lagged choice coefficients that are not brand specific. As opposed to the estimator most frequently used in marketing studies, which drops the first choice of each panelist, this estimator keeps that choice in the estimation sample but ignores the impact of presample choices on first observed choice. The proposed method presents major advantages over dropping the first observation: (1) it yields low bias estimates for state dependence coefficients and, thus, it can be used to assess the presence and the magnitude of state dependence; (2) it is informative about the magnitude of bias in its estimates; and (3) it yields substantially and significantly smaller biases. The results of this study can be used to determine if the proposed method is suitable for specific applications on real data.

Awareness of Distributed Denial of Service Attacks' Dangers: Role of Internet Pricing Mechanisms

Denial of Service (DoS) attacks consist of overwhelming a server, a network or a Web site in order to paralyze its normal activity. The additional parameter in Distributed Denial of Service (DdoS) attacks is the distributing strategy. It means that DDoS attacks do not come from a single computer but stem from all accessible channels and servers. Consequences are multiple, ranging from system errors, temporary inability to access the Web site for normal users to challenging the actual reliability of the Internet. Despite this, Internet users show carelessness. The explanation lies in the specificities of DDoS attacks. We explore possibilities to raise users' awareness about the actual amplitude of problems caused by DDoS attacks. We suggest a careful examination of Internet pricing mechanisms and switching from flat to usage-constraining pricing schemes.

A Way to Play Claims Problems

Commitment among agents is always difficult, especially when a scarce resource is to be shared. On the one hand, there are many possible ways to assign the available amount; on the other hand, each agent is motivated to propose a distribution that maximizes her award. In this paper, we propose a mechanism that combines the diminishing claims (Chun in Math Soc Sci 17(3):245–261, 1989) and the unanimous concessions (Herrero in Advances in economic design. Springer, Berlin, 2003) procedures, thereby obtaining a new justification of rules based on averaging.
