The Great Gatsby depicted a tragedy story in which the infatuated man was abandoned and betrayed by the heartless woman. It＇ sthetale of those times, which is considered as the procession of roaring American Dream, prosperous American Dream and weak American Dream. The Great Gatsby profovndly exposed the reasons why the American Dream collapsed in the Jazz Age. The indifferent, unconcerned, selfish human nature was thoroughly and vividly shown when people were indulged in the money wnrshitp.

The Great Compression of the 1940s: The Public versus the Private Sector

Between 1940 and 1950 wage differentials narrowed substantially, a phenomenon that economic historians have called the “Great Compression.” This paper dis-aggregates the Great Compression into changes within and between the public and private sectors. We show that wage differentials declined in the public sector as well as in the private sector; had the public sector decline not taken place, the Great Compression would have been substantially smaller. In this regard, the experience of the 1940s stands in stark contrast with that of the past two decades, during which a relatively rigid public sector wage structure has dampened overall increases in wage inequality.

The concept of the unemployable

Current government policy documents have been concerned with reforming welfare policy, with matching rights with responsibilities, and especially with reducing the numbers of incapacity benefit claimants. This article places these debates in historical perspective, and revises the existing historiography on poverty and unemployment, by exploring the concept of the 'unemployable' in the period 1880–1940. Up to 1914, unemployability embraced those unable and those unwilling to work, and in the 1920s, similar anxieties were reconstructed in the concept of the 'social problem group'. However, interwar social surveys were concerned more with the effects of long-term unemployment in creating unemployability. There are thus both changes and continuities between historical concerns with unemployability, and contemporary anxieties about incapacity benefit and worklessness.

热潮过后的尴尬

提起青岛,很多市民和游客都会竖起大拇指,说青岛是著名的旅游城市。但是跟国内其他旅游城市相比,很多业内人士开始显得忧心忡忡,青岛旅游还是没有很好地发展起来,主要的是缺乏旅游集散等各种配套设施,旅游企业实力单薄,同时青岛旅游＂三冷三热、三多三少＂老问题长期制约着青岛旅游业的发展,这些近两年虽然有所改善,但没有从根本上加以解决。青岛有着良好的旅游资源和旅游基础,但是对于＂从观光型向度假型旅游城市转变＂,还需继续努力。

金秋的暖阳打在身上,重庆市南川区白沙镇大竹村年满65岁的老农田茂均脸上泛出一片兴奋的古铜红,他手扶锄把给我们解释啥叫CSA蔬菜基地,“CSA”让他这个月又多领了300元工资,他说他家共有3亩地,收入却是以前的5倍. “这真得好好感谢市人口计生委!” 同田茂均一样,自从重庆市人口计生委与白沙镇结对共建以来,村民心里和嘴里便生长出了许多故事.     

遗址的魅力

前段时间,三星堆遗址重大考古发现震惊世界,也让考古再成热门话题.其实巴蜀大地上的古代遗址何其多,除了三星堆遗址,还有泸州宋墓遗址、金沙遗址等,早已被列为国家重点文保单位. 遗址背后,一方一土一窟一佛,无不在与古老文明的各种关联中衍射出非凡的意义.故此,近年来,一些考古爱好者、作家,以更为私人的立场、角度走进这些古代密码...

The dollar in the turmoil

We study the impact of the global financial crisis on the equilibrium exchange rate of the US dollar. We first simulate the impact of the crisis on the US net foreign asset position. Then, we calculate the equilibrium value of the dollar according both to a BEER and to a FEER approach. We find the case for a strong, although temporary, depreciation of the dollar even more acute than before the crisis. This suggests that the strength of the dollar in late 2008 and early 2009 may be short-lived.

The Rise of the Sunbelt

In the last 50 years, population and incomes have increased steadily throughout much of the Sunbelt. This paper assesses the relative contributions of rising productivity, rising demand for Southern amenities, and increases in housing supply to the growth of warm areas, using data on income, housing price, and population growth. Before 1980, economic productivity increased significantly in warmer areas and drove the population growth in those places. Since 1980, productivity growth has been more modest, but housing supply growth has been enormous. We infer that new construction in warm regions represents a growth in supply, rather than demand, from the fact that prices are generally falling relative to the rest of the country. The relatively slow pace of housing price growth in the Sunbelt, relative to the rest of the country and relative to income growth, also implies that there has been no increase in the willingness to pay for sun-related amenities. As such, it seems that the growth of the Sunbelt has little to do with the sun.
