Few industries have undergone such rapid changes during the last ten years as the international oil industry. During this decade, there have been radical changes in the conditions under which international oil companies acquire and trade crude oil. In addition to the changes in the upstream sector the two quantum jumps in oil prices have drastically altered the conditions of downstream operations. Since 1979 oil demand fell more sharply than total energy demand, thereby reducing its relative importance in the energy economy. These events initiated a far-reaching adjustment process which is likely to continue.

Recent negotiations about selling prices for crude oil have reflected an economic controversy between developing countries and the industrialised nations of the West. That, in this particular case, the demands raised by developing countries had to be accepted almost entirely was due to their strong position in the international market for oil. However, such strength In the market is not at all typical for most developing countries.

The quadrupling of the oil price by the OPEC in 1973 was a poignant event in the post-war development of the world economy. Which measures and mechanisms conduced to the international income redistribution necessitated by the hoisting of the oil prices in the past five years?

Crude oil prices as well as most other commodity prices continued their upward trend this year, and several quotations reached
new historic highs. But there is a ray of hope for buyers of raw materials that prices might come down somewhat.

The OPEC price conference in Geneva on May 25–26, 1981 did not resolve the disagreement among OPEC member countries over official prices. As a result of this stalemate, Saudi Arabia with its intention to moderate prices will in the foreseeable future probably not be prepared to make substantial reductions in its high volume of production with which it puts pressure on prices. What short- and medium-term perspectives for the international oil market arise from this situation?

World commodity prices are again showing a marked upward trend. Most pronounced has been the rise in oil prices which have doubled as a result of a new round of production cuts. Is this the beginning of a general turnaround on the commodity markets?
