In recent years airports have been under growing pressure to become financially self-sufficient and to pursue profit maximization in their non-aeronautical or concession operations. In this paper we examine the optimal pricing in a model where concession and aeronautical operations of an airport are considered together with an overall break-even constraint. We find that the optimum solution may require a subsidy from concession to aeronautical operations. However, such a cross-subsidy may or may not restore marginal-cost pricing on aeronautical operations. On the other hand, social welfare can be higher when an airport is allowed to make profits in concession operations than when marginal-cost pricing is imposed on concession operations. 相似文献

This paper examines the efficiency of a tradable travel credit scheme for managing bottleneck congestion and modal split in a competitive highway/transit network with continuous heterogeneity in the individuals’ value of time. Each user is initially endowed with a certain amount of travel credits and can sell or buy additional credits in a free trading market. Time-dependent credit charge is implemented only for usage of the road bottleneck. We show that both the modal split and credit charge at equilibrium are unique, and the scheme is always Pareto-improving when the system optimum is achieved. 相似文献

This paper presents a bi-level robust optimization model, where a food company maximizes its profit and minimizes post-harvest loss by optimally deploying grain processing/storage facilities and determining grain purchase price, while a group of spatially distributed non-cooperative farmers determine harvest time, shipment, storage, and market decisions under yield uncertainty and market equilibrium. The non-cooperative behavior of the food company and the farmers is represented by a bi-level Stackelberg leader follower’s game model with mixed-integer decision variables. The proposed model and solution approach are applied to case studies for Illinois and Brazil. 相似文献

The objective of this research is to identify which are the key variables for designing a message in a social network that can be used by an advertiser to generate Positive/Negative Engagement. The message’s design variables have been classified into four main groups: (i) Message Tools (presence of text, images, video, labels, applications, interactive games and events calendar or others), (ii) Appropriate Message Structure (length and intelligibility), (iii) Informative Cues (links to the brand, orientation towards the product or the brand, topics relevant to the audience, and a remuneration’s promise) and (iv) Persuasive and Emotional Cues (emotional signals, valence, endorsement and influencer mentions). The focus has been a tourist destination: Brand Spain that is advertised through Facebook. A content analysis was carried out and regression analysis with optimal scaling was used on 180 Spain brand’s publications; 57,626 audience reactions to such publications; and 1361 audience comments on the Brand Spain Official Fan Page. According to our results, from the four blocks of predictive variables, only two of them are useful to predict Positive/Negative Engagement: (i) the use of Message Tools (videos), and (ii) the use of informative cues (relevant topics, links on posts, and post’s orientation towards product). 相似文献

We explore the possibilities of using incentive-based environmental regulations of CO2 emissions from international civil aviation. In theory incentive-based instruments such as an emission charge or a tradable emission permit system are better regulations than so-called command-and-control regulations such as emission limits or technology standards. However, the implementation of these instruments is a complex issue. We therefore describe and discuss how an emission charge and a tradable emission permit system for international aviation should be designed in order to improve efficiency. We also compare these two types of regulations. In brief, we find that an emission charge and a tradable emission permit system in which the permits are auctioned have more or less the same characteristics. The main advantage of a tradable emission permit system is that the effect, in terms of emission reductions, is known. On the other hand, we show that under uncertainty an emission charge is preferred. The choice of regulation is a political decision and it does not seem likely that an environmental charge or a tradable emission permit system would be implemented without consideration of the costs of the regulation. Revenue-neutral charges or gratis distribution of permits would, for this reason, be realistic choices of regulations. However, such actions are likely to result in less stringent regulations and other negative welfare effects. 相似文献

This paper describes the landing fee structures which are prevalent at most European airports: a mix of weight-based landing fees, passenger fees, and other charges. The paper describes alternative pricing systems which emphasize economic efficiency rather than airport finance considerations. Finally the paper calculates the structure of landing fees for a hypothetical uncongested airport using a Ramsey pricing formulation with data representative of uncongested Spanish airports. Further research is necessary before recommending implementation because the elasticities of demand and operating costs with distance are borrowed from North American studies. 相似文献

The paper examines why peak runway pricing has never been effectively implemented. Some of the literature discussing the theory is examined to show the basis for the theory and the potential for flaws in practice. Three cases where airports attempted to implement peak runway pricing are analyzed. The findings indicate that there may be some institutional barriers to peak pricing theory that prevent effective implementation. Airports and others seeking to reduce congestion might consider focusing their efforts on working towards providing alternatives for passengers, rather than attempting to use peak pricing as a congestion-reduction mechanism in isolation. 相似文献

A number of studies have examined the feasibility of temporal variations in tolls. However, spatial variation in tolls has not received much attention, especially in practice. Spatial variation could effectively reduce congestion and increase profits. To fill this gap, we conduct an empirical application on 3 different road segments using the Fresno, California's transportation planning model. Our modeling results in a number of interesting insights. First, the derived optimal flat toll values are very close to the average variable tolls, but the effects of applying spatially variable tolls on improving total revenues (from 4% to 24%) and total improved travel time (from 18% to 1083%) measures are significant. Second, spatially variable tolls are more effective, but more costly, particularly for arterials, which can be attributed to the higher number of access points for arterials. Third, spatial variations in tolls are more effective for peak hours than for off-peak hours and for social optimization than for profit maximization. Fourth, to improve throughputs for both profit maximization and social optimization, the prevalent tolling pattern along a corridor induces lower final volumes per capacity (V/Cs) (after pricing) at the mainline flow sections and relatively higher final V/Cs at the entrance and exit (boundary) points. Finally, optimal toll patterns are not dependent on vehicle miles traveled (VMTs) or volumes but, rather, are related to targeted V/Cs. Therefore, flow-dependent charges along a corridor should be based on V/Cs rather than on volumes or VMTs. 相似文献

The main objectives of this study are to answer the following important research questions: (a) Are pricing and value-for-money variables good segmentation bases for clustering hotel clients? (b) What type of tourists can be identified through pricing and value-for-money bases? The main conclusion of this paper is that marketers who apply yield management in their firms should take into account price perceptions of clients and that pricing decisions should be made by properly communicating changes in prices and the reasons behind them. To mitigate traffic externalities, we propose an origin–destination (OD) based road pricing model for traffic assignment problems. For elastic demand, we derive explicit optimal tolls for the OD-based pricing scheme. We also extend the model to a multi-period static traffic assignment (MSTA) where we derive analytically the route and OD-dependent tolls based on equilibrium conditions. We present some examples to show that the OD-based tolling scheme could improve the system welfare significantly, compared to the no-toll scenario (user equilibrium – UE). 相似文献

Drawing on organisational learning theory, this study argues that shipping firms with high continuous improvement capacities have better success in transforming corporate social performance (CSP) into business performance. Survey data were collected from 223 shipping firms in Singapore and analysed using multi-sampling analysis, hierarchical regression modelling, and simple slope analysis. The results support the study’s argument and show that business performance is maximised when continuous improvement programmes targeted at CSP are carried out at a gradual pace and at regular intervals. This implies that shipping firms should adopt a dynamic, value-driven approach to improving CSP. 相似文献

Akamatsu, 2007a, Akamatsu, 2007b proposed a new dynamic traffic congestion control scheme called tradable network permits, and demonstrated its efficiency properties for general road networks. To implement tradable permit markets, this paper proposes a novel auction mechanism with capacity control. This mechanism employs an evolutionary approach to achieve a dynamic system optimal allocation of network permits in a computationally efficient manner. We prove that the proposed mechanism has the following desirable properties: (i) truthful bidding is a dominant strategy for each user on each day and (ii) the permit allocation pattern under the mechanism converges to a dynamic system optimal allocation pattern. 相似文献

The first part of the paper develops a theoretical framework for the analysis of strategic behaviour of European low‐cost airlines that emphasises the role of product differentiation. The second part uses original survey data to assess the effectiveness of low‐cost airlines' distribution strategies. Finally, an econometric model is developed to assess the joint impact of the factors affecting the level of the fares charged by low‐cost airlines. The evidence suggests that, among other things, the highest prices normally are paid for tickets bought between 30 and 8 days before departure, and thus indicates an original pricing strategy that differentiates low‐cost airlines from traditional carriers. Using a panel data for Southwest and JetBlue in the 1st quarter of 2009, 2011, and 2013, we develop an empirical study and find evidence suggesting that the amount of bag fee charged by bag fee airlines, including those direct rivals at the route level and indirect rivals competing from adjacent airports, has a positive and significant effect on the airfare of non-bag fee airlines and such a positive association is smaller on vacation-oriented routes, but greater on routes with higher per capita income at endpoint cities. Moreover, the results are found that on the routes where Southwest is the only non-bag fee airline, the amount of bag fee charged by other airlines has a positive and significant effect on the traffic volume of Southwest. This traffic increasing effect, however, may be offset by the higher airfare of Southwest in response to other airlines’ imposition of bag fees. 相似文献

This paper investigates whether or not the efforts by two of the largest US airlines to increase seat pitch (i.e. legroom) across their aircraft fleet during 2000 resulted in fare premia relative to the other ‘full service carriers’. Using panel data from 1998 to 2002, we estimate fixed-effects regressions in markets with overlapping service between large hub and spoke carriers and find that United's ‘Premium Economy’ program was more successful than American's ‘More Room Throughout Coach’ program at generating fare premia. 相似文献
