Development of an integrated medical supply information system

The integrated medical supply inventory control system introduced in this study is a hybrid system that is shaped by the nature of medical supply, usage and storage capacity limitations of health care facilities. The system links demand, service provided at the clinic, health care service provider's information, inventory storage data and decision support tools into an integrated information system. ABC analysis method, economic order quantity model, two-bin method and safety stock concept are applied as decision support models to tackle inventory management issues at health care facilities. In the decision support module, each medical item and storage location has been scrutinised to determine the best-fit inventory control policy. The pilot case study demonstrates that the integrated medical supply information system holds several advantages for inventory managers, since it entails benefits of deploying enterprise information systems to manage medical supply and better patient services.     

Co-location as a catalyst for service innovation: a study of Scottish health and social care

Academic literature and policy on co-location of local public services focus on the cost benefits. Other benefits and outcomes of co-location, including service innovations benefiting users, are under-conceptualized. This paper suggests a framework for evaluating co-location as a learning environment for innovation, drawing on new case studies of five Community Health Partnerships in Scotland charged with more closely coordinating health and social care. We conclude that partnerships using co-location are benefiting from additional service innovations.     

护理管理在小儿康复病房中的作用分析

目的:探讨护理管理在小儿康复病房中的作用并进行分析。方法:调查我院2010年3月起开展系统护理管理以来160例小儿康复患者的满意程度。结果:通过对系统管理的实施,发现在这160例患者当中,不曾出现一例纠纷问题,同时在患者出院后,病患家属的满意程度也达到93.75%,满意人数达150例。结论:系统护理的实施具备很大的优势,同时还让护理病房得到了全面的、系统的,以及详细的管理方法,从而将护理人员的工作热情和护理技术提高了上去,降低风险几率。     

Project management models as value creators

Based on findings from five case studies, we discuss benefits obtained by using a common project management model. The case studies are part of an international research project aimed at determining the value of project management. All five companies applied a customized project management model. The five models are presented, and their characteristics, similarities, and differences are discussed. Based on interviews and comparisons with literature, the values obtained are identified. The values relate to efficiency, legitimacy, power and control, and stakeholder satisfaction. Further, the article points to necessary preconditions (both technical and human factors) in order to harvest the values.     

Searching the literature: more resources to make the purchase decision

Searching the literature is easier than ever with the advent of CD-ROM. Cost effective and simple to use, this technology is being used for clinical patient management as well as health care administration. For the materiel manager, literature searches can provide additional information, and access to research and other data to assist in making objective, informed, defensible purchasing decisions.

Nursing case management: affecting quality and cost

North Mississippi Health Services' nursing case management program has been deemed a success by all parties involved, especially the patients. High-risk patients with specific chronic health problems receive an enhanced level of care and experience significant reductions in cost, length of stay, and repeat hospitalizations. Quality of life for many of these patients is also improved. These outcomes are made possible by assigning a registered nurse to case manage or coordinate care for these patients.

Efficient approach to health care industry material resource management: an empirical research

The feasibility of JIT implementation in the health care industry was examined through in-depth case studies and survey research. Specifically, this research examined two different groups in the health care industry: health care institutions that have introduced JIT philosophy into their operations and those that have not. Based on this classification, the research reveals the different impacts that the introduction of JIT philosophy has had on the health care industry's inventory management, service quality, and competitiveness. According to the research result, the introduction of the JIT philosophy in the health care industry's material management system improved that system and reduced implementation problems even though the differences between the JH and the NJH were not high. However, this research found that great potentials exist for the successful implementation of JIT philosophy for material management even though most of the JIT in the health care industry is still in its early stages. Moreover, with the maturing of the stockless material management system, differences between the JH and the NJH groups will be even more significant.     

The Link Between Participation in Management Decision-Making and Quality of Patient Care as Perceived by Chinese Doctors

Abstract

This study examined whether and how participation by doctors in management decision-making was associated with patient care. A questionnaire survey was conducted in three hospitals operating in China. Staff members of the selected hospitals were invited to participate in the survey, measuring perceived quality of patient care, employee participation in management decisions, psychological empowerment and affective commitment. This study focuses on the results of the 160 doctors employed by the hospitals who completed the questionnaire. The study found that psychological empowerment and affective commitment mediated the relationship between participation in management decisions and the quality of patient care as perceived by the doctors. Implications are drawn for public management practice in Chinese health care settings.     

Evaluating an agile method for planning and controlling innovative projects

This article presents an extensive investigation carried out in two technology‐based companies of the São Carlos technological pole in Brazil. Based on this multiple case study and literature review, a method, entitled hereafter IVPM2, applying agile project management (APM) principles was developed. After the method implementation, a qualitative evaluation was carried out by a document analysis and questionnaire application. This article shows that the application of this method at the companies under investigation evidenced the benefits of using simple, iterative, visual, and agile techniques to plan and control innovative product projects combined with traditional project management best practices, such as standardization.     

Designing vendor evaluation systems: An empirical analysis

Companies today are increasing efforts to develop their vendor evaluation system (VES) to qualify and select the best suppliers, monitor their performance and foster continuous improvement. VES lies at the intersection of three disciplines: purchasing management, supply chain management, and performance management. The extant literature especially focuses on vendor rating tools from a mathematical modeling standpoint, whereas firms are mostly concerned with guidelines necessary to design and implement an effective VES. The present study develops an encompassing research framework to investigate VES by means of thirteen case studies. In particular, the paper investigates VES design in terms of strategic alignment, process configuration and execution, as well as corresponding benefits and costs, exploring how the combination of the previous elements determines company satisfaction. Three groups of VESs are identified, leading to different levels of satisfaction.     

The impact of buyer-supplier relationship quality and information management on industrial vending machine benefits in the healthcare industry

Despite the calls for a deeper understanding of SCM in the healthcare industry, theoretical research focused on healthcare buyer-supplier collaboration, specifically inventory management issues, remains nascent and fragmented. Although slow to change, healthcare organizations have begun to consider alternative inventory management systems to improve inventory control and patient care. Industrial vending machines (IVM) can help healthcare organizations address inventory management issues. Grounded in transaction cost economics and contingency theory, this research develops and empirically tests a model that highlights the critical role of information management in the link between buyer-supplier relationship quality and performance outcomes within the context of IVM implementation and use in the healthcare industry. Based on survey data from healthcare managers, results indicate that both information management and relationship quality are tied to a series of benefits in the context of collaborative buyer-supplier IVM agreements.     

SIMPLY A QUESTION OF CULTURAL BARRIERS? THE SEARCH FOR NEW PERSPECTIVES IN THE TRANSFER OF JAPANESE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

This paper discusses the transfer of management practices from parent companies in Japan into the operations of overseas subsidiaries of Japanese enterprises. the literature reviewed as well as the findings of case studies on human resource management practices in Japanese manufacturing firms in Australia suggest that key but rather high-cost practices associated with Japanese management including tenured employment, seniority-based remuneration and the provision of extensive welfare benefits are absent in overseas Japanese firms. On the other hand, relatively low-cost practices such as internal training, internal promotion and job rotation have been generally introduced into the firms researched. It appears, therefore, that the transfer of Japanese management practices is primarily affected by economic considerations rather than socio-cultural constraints as it has frequently been argued in the literature. Thus, the development of new theoretical frameworks explaining the transfer (or its absence) of Japanese management practices is essential. the paper takes a small step in this direction by suggesting that the overseas expansion of Japanese subcontracting networks including large-scale corporations as well as smaller size firms, produces conditions leading to the marginalization of segments of the local labour force and the emergence of the core-peripheral workforce dichotomy at the international level.

Environmental Strategies,Upgrading and Competitive Advantage in Global Value Chains

The literature is increasingly focusing on how firms are improving their environmental performances and promoting green strategies to transform environmental constraints into new drivers of competitive advantage. This paper contributes to the literature by expanding knowledge about environmental management at the value chain level by exploring the concept of environmental upgrading and its implications in terms of economic upgrading and greening of industries. Leveraging on the global value chain and environmental managerial literature, the paper develops an integrated theoretical framework to analyse environmental upgrading trajectories and their implications in terms of firms' green strategies based on case studies in the Italian home‐furnishing industry. Empirical evidence suggests that firms develop green strategies to reduce environmental impacts while achieving economic benefits and competitiveness, which may be internal to the firm but also apply to value chains, with different implications in terms of bargaining power and value appropriation. Design of financial incentives and payment schemes in healthcare systems: A review

In this paper, we review the existing studies on the design of financial incentives and payment mechanisms for healthcare service providers, which have been published in the literature of operations research & management science. We classify these studies in two ways: first, by the care provider focused on: physicians or hospitals; and next, by categorizing payment/incentive schemes as retrospective or prospective models under each care provider group. The problem setting, including the geographic background and research methodology, are briefly discussed for each paper, as are the findings with regard to accessibility, quality, efficiency, and the facilitation of integration and collaboration, if reported. We also provide a detailed discussion of potential research problems that would offer promising avenues for future study.     

视频案例教学在管理学课程教学中的应用探析

视频案例教学是信息时代教师教学的重要工具之一，其实践性应用正逐步得到推广和普及。本文首先对视频案例教学中存在的问题进行了分析，进而对西方有关视频案例教学的相关研究进行了文献梳理，对视频案例教学的相关概念、视频案例在教学过程中的作用及视频案例在教学中的应用进行了讨论，最后针对管理学课程教学提出几点启示和建议：视频案例的构建要遵循分段和有序原则，注意教学中的师生互动，多种媒介结合使用等。     

Maximizing value in healthcare partnerships: A case examining an inter-organizational relationship in the public and non-profit sectors

Healthcare organizations around the world are striving to find the right balance between using their resources effectively and providing personalized care to patients. Health care is shifting from a reactive, towards a more person-centric approach to improve health outcomes. To achieve quality improvements and efficiencies, health care organizations are forming inter-organizational relationships. Despite the benefits, little is known about how organizations capture value from strategic partnership. In this context, this paper aims to examine the processes that occur as part of a public and non-profit sector relationship within health care that directly relate to how the partnering organization acts to capture value. Using a qualitative case study of an Australian public-sector health service partnership, the study employs a value mapping framework to distinguish between different types of value (captured, missed, destroyed, and opportunity), and presents an integrated model consisting of three process phases: (1) inter-organizational cooperation effort, (2) organizational effect, and (3) social value. The study highlights the potential for negative and unintended consequences and discusses implications for management.
