Strategy and Suggestion on the Development of Credit Reporting Industry in China

Credit reporting industry of China can＇t satisfy the demand of quick economicdevelopment. Considering the condition and requirement for development of credit reporting, this paper firstly discusses preliminary problems related to credit reporting, such as law and regulation, credit information sharing and industry management. Then we study the problems of how to carry out the development of credit reporting system, including which credit reporting pattern, private or public credit reporting, to be adopted, roles of government, etc. At the end of the paper, some relative suggestions about credit legislation, establishment and development of credit system are presented.     

Regional Development of Manufacturing Industry in the Eastern and Midwestern Regions of China——Based on the Theory of “Home Market Effects”

“新经济地理理论”强调规模经济是地区贸易和国际贸易的驱动力,这种力量被克鲁格曼称为“本地市场效应”(Home Market Effects).本地市场效应理论不仅具有重要的理论意义,而且具有现实的经济意义.借助时间序列分析方法,笔者重点实证检验了中国东、中西部地区相关制造业的本地市场效应.检验结果表明:多数制造业部门在中国东、中西部区域经济发展中,本地需求规模起到了主要作用,企业劳动生产率和固定成本对本地市场效应的向心力和离心力作用.因此,在追求未来区域经济和谐发展的过程中,注重培育相关产业的本地市场效应十分重要.     

Political Economy of Industrial Development in Vietnam’s Telecommunications Industry: A Rent Management Analysis

This article contributes to the current debate in economics on the uses and benefits of rents and rent seeking. On the one hand, public choice and neoliberal scholars highlight the redistributive and damaging aspects of rent seeking, thus rendering the policy suggestion to completely eradicate rents and rent seeking in an economy. On the other hand, institutional and development economists point out the inherent theoretical inconsistencies shown in the earlier models, and suggest that certain types of rent and rent seeking could be growth-enhancing. Using the Developmental Rent Management Analysis, this article assesses the industrial development of the telecommunications industry in Vietnam using two case studies. Qualitative research points out a number of rent management factors contributing both to the industry’s failure before the early 2000s and its subsequent success thereafter. The successful development of the telecommunications industry was fundamentally based on (i) favorable political support for rent creation, (ii) an effective structure of rent allocation and implementation, and (iii) credible incentives and pressures that encouraged local firms’ industrial upgrading. The Vietnamese experience suggests that rents can be developmental, conceivably side-by-side with rent seeking, cronyism and corruption.

On China＇s Sustainable Development of Energy—Opportunity for the China＇s Nuclear Power Industry

According to the poficy of reforming the power industry and accelerating the power construction of our country, by 2020, the national power consumption will be up to 3.6-3.7 trillion kilowatt-hours, the installed power-generating capacity is more than 800 million kilowatts. Therefore, the development of the China‘s nuclear power industry faces good international and domestic environments and good historical opportunities. From the point of national energy security, economic development, and resource distribution, it is analyzed that China must develop the nuclear power in a more cost-effective style in this paper.     

An Empirical Analysis of the Effects on Firms’ Economic Performance of Implementing Environmental Management Systems

This paper investigates whether environmental management system (EMS) implementation influences a firm’s value added, one of the indices of economic performance. Because it is expected that EMS implementation increases a firm’s value added through an increase in demand and an improvement in productivity, a simple model to identify how these effects influence a firm’s value added is developed and is empirically investigated using panel data for Japanese manufacturing firms in the period 1996–2007. The main findings are as follows. For the full sample, EMS implementation increases a firm’s value added through an increase in demand and improvement in productivity. Among these firms, however, the positive effect of the implementation through an increase in demand mainly exists for export-oriented firms. At the industry level, the effects of EMS implementation vary among different industries. These results empirically prove that there are plural paths for EMS implementation to improve a firm’s economic performance.     

What Role Does the Political Environment Play in Economic Development? —A Case Study of Fujian Province

Uncertainty induced by the political environment affects investment risk, and thus affects investment decisions, which have a close relationship with economic development. This paper investigates the economic cost of political instability using the case study of the tense relationship across-Strait in China. We use a synthetic control method to better model the counterfactual analysis of this case study. The intense situation of the relations across-Strait has great influence on the economic development of Fujian province. Fujian province is the closest province in proximity to Taiwan and also possesses the greatest preferential policies for Taiwanese direct investment. The empirical results of this study reveal that during 2001-2008 Fujian province’s average annual loss in GDP per capita was 682.54 yuan. In other words, GDP per capita in Fujian has declined about 12.1 percent annually during this period compared with GDP per capita as calculated by the synthetic control method.

Journey into the Unknown? Economic Consequences of Factor Market Integration under Increasing Returns to Scale

What are the dynamic consequences of comprehensive integration shocks? The answer to this question appears all but trivial. A dynamic macroeconomic model is set up of a small open economy with capital mobility, migration and increasing returns to scale. The model features multiple equilibria as well as (local and global) indeterminacy. Despite its simplicity, the model creates a rich set of plausible implications. This paper clarifies the mechanics that may lead an integrating economy to the good or to the bad equilibrium by showing how fundamentals and expectations interact in the process of equilibrium selection. The model is applied to replicate two striking empirical characteristics of macroeconomic development in East Germany since 1990.
