新世纪经济史学的新趋势--第13届世界经济史大会侧记

Economic history of Taiwan: a survey

This article surveys research on Taiwan's economic history for the past fifteen years, covering a period from approximately the eighteenth to early twentieth century. It discusses the works of economists as well as studies by researchers in history and other fields. The topics selected for the survey are: change of Taiwan's per capita GDP in the long-term; trade and development; aborigine property rights; and institutional change in the early Japanese colonial period.

本文是对经济史学理论的研究。全文分两部分。第一部分谈历史观,回 溯经济史学史,介绍西方的历史哲学,比较中西方的历史观,探究理性发展的道路,对理性主义作了反思。第二部分着重探讨经济史方法论问题,其中包括实证主义与相关问题、经济学理论与经济史研究、结构主义和整体史观、经济计量学方法、新制度学派经济史理论,并阐发了经济发展、制度变迁和社会与文化思想变迁的关系。     

International monetary issues and the developing countries: a survey

This review of the academic and official literature relating to international monetary issues and the developing countries concentrates on three matters: the appropriateness of conventional fiscal, monetary and exchange-rate measures for balance-of-payments adjustment in developing countries; the need of developing countries for international liquidity and the adequacy of supply to them; and the monetary legitimacy and technique of linking international liquidity creation and development aid. It describes the opportunity which the breakdown of the Bretton Woods system in 1971, and the subsequent establishment of the Committee of Twenty, have provided for developing countries to have a voice in international monetary affairs; and it indicates a number of areas for further research and study at the policy level.     

Explorations in monetary history: A survey of the literature

Monetary economists have long been interested in economic history as a laboratory for the testing of theory. This paper surveys recent work in monetary history within the context of the modern quantity theory of money and the new classical macroeconomics. Topics surveyed include the development of historical monetary statistics and the determinants of money supply and money demand; historical uses of Granger-Sims causality tests of the relationships between money, prices, and output; historical studies of the secular behavior of velocity; the Great Depression; financial crises; historical evidence for the long-run and short-run neutrality of money; and domestic and international aspects of monetary standards. Each topic surveyed concludes with an evaluation and an agenda for future research.     

Economic History of Asia: comparative perspectives

This article surveys studies that provide a comparative perspective on the economic history of Asia. The available paradigms tend to be extrapolations of the relatively well-researched long-term development of Japan and China. It remains to be seen whether these apply to other Asian countries, but they are likely to further comparative research that will help to focus scholarship on the crucial factors in understanding long-term economic development in Asia.
