Using basic research as a catalyst to exploit new technology-based innovations - a case study

The difficulties related to the commercialization, or even to the introduction, of new technologies and solutions to common problems are well documented. The paper presents a case on how to introduce new technology to a complex research environment, in order to catalyse its commercialization. The central theme of the approach is on understanding all the possible applications and implications that the new technology shares when implemented to replace conventional solutions. The potential customer of the new technology and the related technological domains must be mapped systematically to establish technological trajectories which overlap with the possible applications. This mapping provides the framework for detailed application analysis with pointers to the right people responsible for the potential application area.The results produced indicate that three characteristic application classes for a new technology can be mapped. Special solutions pinpoint a non-standard application area where the new design is being implemented as a prototype. Research and development based applications require collaboration with the customer as the new technology may assist in achieving the goals set for the future. System applications emphasize the use of the new technology as part of a complete and widely used conventional system. A thorough case study is documented to demonstrate the classification of alternative application areas of a new technology. Also, the evolution of a new technology through different application classes is discussed. The case technology is related to high-speed electrical machines and the potential user is CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics.

The importance of efficient use in the adoption of technology: A micro panel data analysis

Even after the introduction of the new rice technology (Green revolution) about more than two decades ago, the food shortage problem has not decreased significantly in many developing countries. Obviously, there can be no dispute over the importance of the new rice technology in bringing about improvements in agricultural productivity. But, there are factors other than the choice of technology which are equally important, and a neglect of these factors may lead to a complete negation of any possible gains in productivity arising from the use of new technology. One such factor is the efficient use of the technology. This paper examines farm-specific application of the new rice technology by using a micro-level panel data from a South Indian district. The results show a wide variation in the efficient use of the technology by the sample farmers. Extension and education were identified as two major constraining factors.The refereeing process of this paper was handled through N.R. Adam.

A systematic approach to prioritizing R&D projects based on customer-perceived value using opinion mining

As product development has recently emphasized user innovation, it should necessarily reflect customer-perceived value, as well as technological value itself. However, while previous studies for technology planning have focused on analyzing the potential of technology, they have not considered the customer-perceived value that technology can create in a new product. Therefore, this research suggests a new approach to assessing the level of technology and evaluating R&D projects, by investigating customer-perceived value on technology through the use of the structural equation model and opinion mining. For this, the assessment framework is developed in terms of technology, product quality, and customer satisfaction, respectively, by investigating a variety of databases on each factor. The relationship between technology level and customer satisfaction is analyzed, using structural equation model and opinion mining. Based on the results, a strategy for technology development is established through gap analysis and simulation, after selecting and evaluating technologies that need to be developed. The proposed approach is applied to the real case of a moving system, in particular an automobile door, and we obtained that an R&D project for hinge-related technology would be promising, enhancing the customer satisfaction. It can suggest a future direction for new technology development. This paper contributes to enhancing the efficiency of technology planning based on the customer-perceived value, enabling the launch of new R&D projects.

A two-way relationship between multi-level technological change and organisational characteristics-cases involving the development of heavy hybrid buses

This paper analyses inter- and intra-organisational interaction in cases of product development, which involves significantly new technologies that affect core product sub-systems. The analysis shows that in such cases, there is a need to collaborate with suppliers to learn about the new technology. Moreover, provided that the firm's existing technology is still relevant, there is a need to integrate the new technology with existing technologies. Therefore, close supplier interaction has to be associated with close intra-organisational interaction. However, even a case where there is a limited need to integrate the new technology with existing technologies, there is a need to justify the new technology internally and negotiate the process of adopting it within the organisation. The paper thus demonstrates a two-way relationship between organisational characteristics and multi-level technological change. On the one hand, different types of technological changes demand different kinds of R&D organisations and supplier relationships. On the other hand, decisions to implement technological changes are influenced by existing organisational structures and product development philosophies.

The discipline of management of technology,based on considerations related to technology

Based on a critical approach to the discipline of management of technology, this paper raises some questions regarding how well suited different perceptions of technology and management of technology are for managing technology in a world enriched by complexity and diversity. It is argued that state-of-the-art perceptions of technology and management of technology have evolved over the years to include more and more issues. However, three current challenges, new understanding of organisation, strategy, and management, point to a number of discussions for management of technology at this point in time. We therefore argue that a perception of technology should take into account the human aspects of technology, the irrational view of technology as socially constructed, should contribute to the new, nonhierarchical organisation, and make it possible to use the complexity and diversity of the business environment proactively.

Optimal response to a next generation new product introduction: to imitate or to leapfrog?

In this paper, we study the choice of technology levels and timing of the introduction of new technologies in a market in which customer sophistication increases over time. Faced with the introduction of a new generation product, a firm can either imitate or leapfrog it. If the new product is introduced optimally, we show that the optimal response is to imitate it. This is because the technology leader's best strategy is to set a technology level that makes imitation the best response. We also derive decision rules for the timing of introduction of new technologies. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
