Several studies find that bond rating downgrades cause negative valuation effects. Other studies find that signals conveyed by earnings releases, earnings forecasts, bankruptcies, and stock offerings of individual firms can be transmitted to their corresponding industries. By combining the two sets of studies, we hypothesize that bond rating changes may contain relevant information not only about the firm, but also about the corresponding industry. We find significantly negative valuation effects for rating downgrades, which are transmitted throughout the industry. Furthermore, we find that intra-industry effects depend on particular characteristics of the bond downgrade, the downgraded firm, and industry rivals. Specifically, the negative intra-industry effects are more pronounced when (1) the downgraded firm experiences a more severe share price response to the bond rating downgrade, (2) the downgraded firm is dominant in the industry, (3) the downgraded firm is more closely related to its rivals in the industry, and (4) the downgrade is due to a deterioration in the firm's financial prospects. 相似文献

We examine the effect of 269 cross‐border listings on rivals in the listing and domestic markets and find that U.S. rivals experience significant gains whereas domestic rivals do not. Both competitive and information effects are important in explaining the reaction of U.S. rivals. Regarding the competitive effects, the reaction of rivals is less favorable when listings originate in developed countries and more favorable when listing firms do not have prior operating presence in the United States. The maritime industry provides an interesting case study of the design and implementation of drug-testing programs in the
transportation industry during the 1980s. It is clear that such programs were designed and implemented less because of empirical
evidence of safety problems than for political reasons. The results in the maritime industry are indicative of a program that
is expensive to operate, intrusive with regard to employee privacy, and which will have little or no impact on safety. Focusing
such programs on the issue of impairment rather than on the issue of drug usage per se is likely to improve the outcome of
the programs.

Muslim immigrants to Europe display distinctive attitudes toward women in a wide range of survey data. This study investigates whether this translates into distinctive behavior. Relying on a dictator game in France and an identification strategy that isolates the effect of religion from typical confounds such as race, we compare the donations of matched Christian and Muslim immigrants and rooted French to in‐group and out‐group men vs. women. Our results indicate that Muslim immigrant participants deviate from Christian immigrant and rooted French participants in their behavior toward women: while the latter favor women over men, Muslim immigrants favor men over women. 相似文献

Framing has been widely shown to affect decision making. In this paper, we investigate experimentally whether, and to what extent, cooperative behaviour in a Game of Chicken may be impacted by a very basic change in the labelling of the strategies. Our within‐subject experimental design involves two treatments. The only difference between them is that we introduce either a socially‐oriented wording (I cooperate/I do not cooperate) or colours (red/blue) to designate strategies. The level of cooperation appears to be higher in the socially‐oriented context, but only when uncertainty as regards the type of the partner is manipulated, and especially among females. 相似文献

A premature death unexpectedly brings a life and a career to their end, leading to substantial welfare losses. We study the retirement decision in an economy with risky lifetime and compare the laissez‐faire with egalitarian social optima. We consider two social objectives: (1) the maximin on expected lifetime welfare, allowing for a compensation for unequal life expectancies, and (2) the maximin on realized lifetime welfare, allowing for a compensation for unequal lifetimes. The latter optimum involves, in general, decreasing lifetime consumption profiles as well as raising the retirement age. Many states in the US have considered adopting ‘English-only’ legislation since the early 1980s. This paper argues that this legislation has a variety of expected and unexpected outcomes. Using the 1980 and 1990 Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS), this study finds that Asian immigrants in general and Hispanic immigrants who arrived to the US prior to 1970 acquired more English fluency on average during the 1980s when residing in states that passed English-only (EO) legislation compared to their similar peers. The passage of such legislation also appears to have distorted residence decisions as well as the relative quality of immigrants between EO and non-EO states. 相似文献

Though uninsured depositors are recognized as a source of market discipline, the possible disciplinary effect of decisions
made by fully insured depositors have gone largely unexamined. Using proprietary administrative deposit data at the account
level, this paper analyzes depositor behavior at a recently failed institution. The results suggest that although uninsured
deposits exited at a greater rate than insured deposits, the vast majority of deposits withdrawn were fully insured. Among
types of deposit accounts, the rates of withdrawal for fully insured individual, joint, and trust accounts were relatively
high. Uninsured business account owners were highly sensitive to the bank's deteriorating condition. In contrast, owners of
uninsured individual retirement accounts effectively exerted no market discipline.
