This paper argues that Ronald Coase's major contributions to economic theory are best understood in terms of the distinct method he used to build more realistic models of choice. We call his method the benchmark-comparison method. It consists of building models of choice and then using them as benchmarks in the further investigation of economic interaction, either by comparing the benchmark models with observed interaction or by building additional models of choice, which may themselves function as benchmarks. The paper first describes the method then demonstrates how Coase used it in his two most famous papers. We go on to show how an understanding of the method confirms Coase's own statements about the continuity of his thought. Finally, we assess Coase's critique of Milton Friedman's positivist methodology and discuss a recent paper on Coase's methodology. 相似文献

Despite the growing importance of sustainable management of human resources, human resource management and leadership research on mutuality in the employment relationship has proceeded in a parallel fashion. Drawing on self‐determination theory, this study proposes an integrative model of human growth by addressing two interrelated questions: (a) how and why experienced service‐oriented high‐performance work systems (HPWS) and unit service leadership relate to psychological health and service performance and (b) whether thriving at work and psychological health serially mediate the relationships between the two contextual antecedents and service performance. Our findings revealed that experienced service‐oriented HPWS and unit service leadership related to service performance but indirectly through thriving at work. However, experienced service‐oriented HPWS but not unit service leadership related to psychological health through thriving at work. Furthermore, thriving at work and psychological health serially mediated the relationship between experienced service‐oriented HPWS (but not unit service leadership) and service performance. 相似文献

Technological advances in satellite communications and changes in regulatory philosophy in the USA came together at the end of the 1970s to foster a new medium — direct broadcasting by satellite (DBS). DBS, similar to other new television distribution systems, holds the promise not only of serving the people who cannot be reached by conventional television systems, but also of offering diverse programming to existing television audiences. However, the potential problems raised by the FCC's interim DBS regulations might jeopardize the economic viability and the development of future DBS systems in the USA, and might affect the interests of DBS audiences. 相似文献

Guanxi is known to be an important feature of Chinese society, and while studies of the subject are voluminous, the present study attempts to explore two critical aspects that tend to be neglected. First, previous studies have mostly dealt with guanxi in business activities, but we analyze the meanings of guanxi in the context of ordinary people. More importantly, even though guanxi has routinely been attributed to Confucianism, it begs the more fundamental question of why Chinese society has developed Confucianism and why the latter has become the dominant ideology over the centuries. We provide a plausible account of this important question from both sociological and economic perspectives. Secondly, we illustrate the general implications of guanxi in Chinese society, in particular relating guanxi to the development of democracy and of the rule of law. Consequently, its significance in Chinese society is actually more important than what has been suggested in the literature. Finally, we present some preliminary empirical evidence, based on survey results, of the importance of guanxi in contemporary Chinese society. 相似文献

This study developed a decision tree framework to predict and distinguish employee responses to problematic working conditions. In this framework, job satisfaction and self-efficacy were antecedent variables; five responses from the modified EVLN typology were used as dependent variables. Data from 367 police officers in Taiwan were analyzed to examine the linear and quadratic relationships between job satisfaction and each of the five responses. The sample was further divided into six groups according to individual job satisfaction and self-efficacy. In each group, specific response patterns were analyzed through paired sample t-tests. The pattern analysis results partially supported the prediction of decision tree framework. 相似文献

Abstract. Coase once remarked that 'a theory serves as a base for thinking', but he never explained explicitly what he meant or developed the idea. Cheung, a friend of Coase for several decades, has inadvertently taken up the task. With his widely read literary economic essays, Cheung forcefully demonstrates the analytical power of economics and almost single-handedly launched a unique literary tradition in the Chinese-speaking world. If the economist can help improve the efficiency of resource allocation by advising policy makers, then his helping the general public to acquire the economic way of thinking would have an even more profound impact. 相似文献

This study investigates the psychological process of how authentic leadership affects employee voice behaviors. The theoretical
model of this study proposes that employee positive mood and leader–member exchange (LMX) quality mediate the relationship
between authentic leadership and voice behavior, while the procedural justice climate moderates the mediation effects of positive
mood and LMX quality. Multi-level data from 70 workgroups of a real estate agent company in Taiwan support all hypotheses.
This study reveals the cross-level effects of authentic leadership, and provides practical suggestions to help employees express

Napa is a renowned region for wine tourism and demonstrates how wine can be an instrument to develop tourism. The purpose of this research is to identify the critical success factors that have shaped the area's rise and growth, and its unique competitiveness in both the domestic and global marketplaces for wine tourism destinations. The findings from the research provide the foundation for a proposed conceptual model of success factors in wine tourism research and as insight to practitioners/suppliers.
