Community resilience is a term that describes the community's ability to function amidst crises or disruptions. Community resilience is perceived as a fundamental element in emergency preparedness and as a mean of ensuring social stability in the face of crises, including disasters. However, there is a paucity of empiric evidence for this conjecture. This paper demonstrates the use of the Conjoint Community Resilience Assessment Measurement (CCRAM) for estimating the ability of a community to be resilient in the face of disaster. Six factors of community resilience were identified based on a study conducted in nine small to medium size towns (N = 886): Leadership, collective efficacy, preparedness, place attachment, social trust and social relationship. Multiple logistic regressions yielded the CCRAM protective factors for perceived community resilience. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis confirmed the quality of the CCRAM as a diagnostic tool for perceived community resilience. The CCRAM tool is presented as a potential provider of information for authorities and decision makers as an aid for foreseeing and planning towards the challenges present during emergency times. 相似文献

Interest in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has proliferated in academic and business circles alike. In the context
of CSR, the spotlight has traditionally focused on the role of the private sector particularly in view of its wealth and global
reach. Other actors have recently begun to assume more visible roles in the context of CSR, including Non-governmental organizations
(NGOs) which have acquired increasing prominence on the socio-economic landscape. This article examines five partnerships
between businesses and NGOs in a developing country context that fall in the realm of CSR. The article starts with a literature
review, delineating foundational underpinnings that have to be carefully designed and crafted to promote the success of collaborative
ventures. An empirical study of five selected partnerships between businesses and NGOs in Lebanon is then presented, allowing
to derive interesting insights into types of existing alliances, their relational characteristics as well as salient factors

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Theory and Practice in a Developing Country Context 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
After providing an overview of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) research in different contexts, and noting the varied
methodologies adopted, two robust CSR conceptualizations – one by Carroll (1979, ‘A Three-Dimensional Conceptual Model of
Corporate Performance’, The Academy of Management Review
4(4), 497–505) and the other by Wood (1991, ‘Corporate Social Performance Revisited’, The Academy of Management Review
16(4), 691–717) – have been adopted for this research and their integration explored. Using this newly synthesized framework,
the research critically examines the CSR approach and philosophy of eight companies that are considered active in CSR in the
Lebanese context. The findings suggest the lack of a systematic, focused, and institutionalized approach to CSR and that the
understanding and practice of CSR in Lebanon are still grounded in the context of philanthropic action. The findings are qualified
within the framework of existing contextual realities and relevant implications drawn accordingly.
Dr. Jamali is Assistant Professor of Management at the Olayan School of Business, American University of Beirut. She holds
a BA in Public Administartion from the American University of Beirut, and a Ph.D. in Social Policy and Administration, from
the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. Her research interests encompass corporate social responsibility, public private
partnerships, learning organizations and women issues. She worked as an expert consultant on projects funded by the World
Bank, the US Agency for International Development, NGOs, and other regional and local public and private firms. She is the
author of numerous studies and international peer reviewed publications in various international journals, including the Journal
of Management Development, the International Journal of Public Sector Management, the International Journal of Quality and
Reliability Management, Business Process Management Journal, Public Works, Management and Policy and Women in Management Review.
Ramez Mirshak Graduated with honors from the American University in Cairo (AUC) with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration
in February 2001, then worked for two years in Egypt in the field of marketing and management. In 2004–2005, pursued his Masters
of Business Administration at the American University of Beirut (AUB), researching primarily issues relating to change management
and corporate social responsibility under the supervision of Dr. Dima Jamali, then joined a leading international financial

Research summary : Building on economic geography and institutional theory, we develop and test theory relating geographic variables to the strength of corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagement and the cost of equity capital. For a large sample of U.S. firms over the period 1998–2009, we find strong and robust evidence that firms located in areas characterized by high levels of local CSR density score higher in CSR engagement. In addition, firms located close to major cities and financial centers exhibit higher CSR engagement compared to firms located in more remote areas. Moreover, the effect of CSR engagement on reducing equity financing costs is even greater for firms in high CSR density areas than for firms in low CSR density areas. Managerial summary : Does the location of CSR engagement by firms affect the strength of CSR engagement by their neighbors? Does the geography of engagement have an impact on financial performance? Our findings show that a firm's CSR engagement increases in areas where there is dense CSR engagement and when it is located near large cities. In these areas, norms, values, and knowledge related to CSR are transmitted to firms through face‐to‐face meetings and frequent social interactions with groups such as peers, labor unions, news media, universities, and community organizations, which tend to be concentrated in large cities. Our findings further highlight that CSR engagement reduces equity financing costs for firms in areas where CSR is widely practiced. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Venture Capital Valuation,Partial Adjustment,and Underpricing: Behavioral Bias or Information Production? 下载免费PDF全文
Using a sample of venture capital (VC)‐backed initial public offerings (IPOs), we analyze the role played by perceived valuation changes on IPO underpricing. We find that perceived valuation change from the last pre‐IPO VC round to the IPO affects IPO underpricing in a nonlinear way. Further analysis indicates that information‐based theories, not behavioral biases, explain this nonlinearity. We also find that the previously documented partial adjustment effect and its nonlinear impact on IPO underpricing are related to the trajectory of the perceived valuation changes, which stands in stark contrast to prior evidence of the importance of behavioral biases. 相似文献

The continuous wavelet transform analysis may provide a rich and flexible framework for the analysis of time series which exhibit less stable statistical properties, such as the ones describing the dynamic trajectory of capital markets. In contrast to the Fourier analysis, wavelet transform preserves information on both time and frequency. We provide a summary of the most important features of this framework. By involving the concept of coherence as well as its partial and multiple forms, we analyse the connections between Santiago Stock Exchange, Mexican Stock Exchange and BM&FBOVESPA São Paulo Stock Exchange, for a time span which covers the 23 September 2003–12 March 2014 period. We highlight the existence of several significant forces of regional integration and of a short- to medium-run synchronization process between these markets. We conclude that deeper structural and institutional reforms are required in order to enhance the sustainable development and more profound integration of these markets. 相似文献

This paper capitalizes on an institutional perspective to analyze corporate social responsibility (CSR) orientations in the
Lebanese context. Specifically, the paper compiles a new theoretical framework drawing on a multi-level model of institutional
flows by Scott (Institutions and organizations: ideas and interests, 2008) and the explicit/implicit CSR model by Matten and Moon (Acad Manag Rev 33(2):404–424, 2008). This new theoretical framework is then used to explore the CSR convergence versus divergence question in a developing country
context. The findings highlight the usefulness of the compiled multi-layered institutional framework and the varied nuances
and profound insights it offers in analyzing CSR in context. They also suggest that a cosmetic level of global convergence
in explicit CSR may materialize in light of mimetic isomorphic pressures, but that the path dependence hypothesis is indeed
salient in light of national history trajectories and socio-politico configurations. The findings correspond most closely
to patterns of CSR crossvergence, combining elements of both convergence and divergence, and reflecting in complex hybridized

The issue of accountants' role in decision-making has been the center of attention of lots of studies in the last decade but never did it get the adequate coverage in Lebanon. This paper studies to what extent accountants are involved in the managerial decision-making in Lebanon. Two hundred experienced accountants from all over the country were randomly selected for a questionnaire survey. This survey provides evidence as to what factors contribute to the variance of influence accountants have in managerial decision-making. The results from the questionnaires varied, but we conclude that accountants' involvement in new product development (NPD), the skills that accountants have, their role in the financial analysis of the firm, and how much the finn they work for encourages them to advice on business decisions affect the degree of contribution an accountant has to decision-making. The findings of this research could be used as a reference to help in understanding the role of accounting in Lebanon by various finns and organizations. 相似文献

Through a multilevel view, this article challenges the dominant assumption in the literature suggesting that family employees will receive more compensation than their non-family peers, which will violate the latter group justice perceptions and will lead them to lower their inputs to retrieve equity. We start by discussing how competing socioemotional priorities combine with the degree of collectivism at the societal level to affect which group will bifurcated compensation favor. We suggest that embeddedness in a collectivist culture will generate a strong desire and a moral obligation to cater to the financial well-being of family members, hence leading to bifurcated compensation favoring family employees. In individualist cultures, however, the family will accord high importance to achieving family prominence, which leads to bifurcated compensation favoring non-family employees. Moving forward, we discuss how nepotism types shape the effect of bifurcated compensation on the under-privileged group work inputs and how this relationship is moderated by the extent of power distance embedded in society. Theoretical and empirical implications are discussed at the end of the paper. 相似文献
