This paper is an introduction to the special issue from the 3rd Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Research Conference held in
Washington, D.C., in 2008. The paper has three objectives. First, to discuss the importance of the three stages of economic
development, the factor-driven stage, the efficiency-driven stage and the innovation-driven stage. Second, to examine the empirical evidence on the relationship between stages of economic development and entrepreneurship.
Third, to present a summary of the papers in the context of the theory.

Capital Mobility, Agglomeration and Corporate Tax Rates: Is the Race to the Bottom for Real? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Based on a data set for 19 OECD countries for the period 19812001,we estimate the impact of FDI on corporate tax rates, wherechanges in FDI are a measure for changes in capital mobility. So far the literature has been concerned with the related butrather different question as to the sensitivity of FDI to taxrates. Our article takes an opposite perspective and asks whatthe impact of capital mobility is on corporate tax rates. Indoing so, we explicitly take the role of agglomeration intoaccount. In theory, core countries can afford a higher tax ratecompared to peripheral countries. In our estimation strategy,we instrument capital mobility to deal with reverse causality. The main conclusion is that increased international capitalmobility, measured by FDI flows, implies a lower corporate taxrate. But we also find that agglomeration matters: core countrieshave a higher corporate tax rate than peripheral countries. If there is a race to the bottom, it seems that it is more realfor some countries than others. Sustainable land use planning is crucial for realizing the aim of food security and for combating land degradation in the Sahel. A participatory land use planning workshop was organised in a village in the eastern region of Burkina Faso to investigate land use problems, their causes, effects and possible solutions. Participatory research tools and GIS were combined to get insight into possible conflicts or synergies between different land use options as mapped by different ethnic groups. Pictograms were used to locate alternative land use options on the map, after which they were digitised for analysis with GIS. The workshop confirms the importance of integrating scientific and local knowledge to develop concrete options for sustainable land use that fit to local realities and aspirations. Local people are knowledgeable about the driving forces behind land degradation, they take actions to combat the effects of degradation, and they have concrete ideas about alternative land use options. The use of GIS proved its added value in the participatory process of integrated land use planning. The maps that were produced also facilitate discussions between community members, researchers and government representatives at the regional level, both regarding current land use problems and regarding alternative options as perceived by the local population. 相似文献

Entrepreneurship,export orientation,and economic growth 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper the relationship between a country’s prevalence of new ventures and its rate of economic growth is investigated,
while taking into account new ventures’ export orientation. It is generally acknowledged that new venture creation as well
as export activity may both be important strategies for achieving national economic growth. However, to our knowledge no attempt
has been made to investigate empirically the role of export-driven new ventures in economic growth. We focus on the national
level and use data for a sample of 34 countries over the period 2002–2008. Our results suggest that, on top of a positive
relation between entrepreneurial activity in general and subsequent macroeconomic growth, there is an additional positive
effect of export-oriented early-stage entrepreneurship in higher-income countries. However, there is no such additional effect
in lower-income countries. 相似文献

Prior research investigates the role of start-up costs and taxes with regard to entrepreneurship. Yet, little distinction is made regarding the type of entrepreneurship, particularly innovative versus non-innovative entrepreneurship. We shall argue that start-up costs and taxes are associated in different ways with innovative versus non-innovative entrepreneurship. Taxes being recurring costs should mainly relate to innovative entrepreneurship, whereas start-up costs being one-off costs should mainly relate to non-innovative entrepreneurship. Analyzing a dataset of 632,116 individuals, including 43,223 entrepreneurs from 53 countries, we can partially confirm our predictions. Corporate taxes show a negative relationship with innovative entrepreneurship, whereas income taxes seem to have no relationship. High start-up costs have a positive relationship with innovative entrepreneurship, although this finding only holds true in cross-sectional investigations. Our paper contributes to the discussion on how governmental regulation and taxes relate to entrepreneurship. 相似文献

This paper explores differences in the proportion of export-oriented early-stage entrepreneurial activity in 12 Asian countries.
Drawing on varieties of capitalism theory, we find that Asian countries with high quality institutions are more likely to
have higher proportions of young export-oriented firms. However, analysis on a 51 country data set indicates that Asian countries
have significantly fewer young export-oriented firms than do non-Asian countries. Furthermore, the multi-country study reveals
that countries with higher proportions of export-oriented entrepreneurial activity tend to have flexible industrial relations,
high quality vocational training, and confrontational labor–employer relations, however the proportion of export-oriented
new ventures is not related to the quality of corporate governance and inter-firm relations.

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are known to face barriers which limit their ability to grow. We build on resource dependency theory and the resource-based view to investigate how SMEs are able to achieve venture growth in the face of these constraints by adopting internationalization and inter-firm collaboration strategies. Based on a large sample of European SMEs, our research demonstrates the importance of distinguishing between specific dimensions of internationalization and inter-firm collaborations, in particular between exporting and importing, and between formal and informal collaborations – as well as context-specificity of these strategies with respect to the types of constraints SMEs face. 相似文献

Developments within social and exact sciences take place because scientists engage in scientific practices that allow them to further expand and refine the scientific concepts within their scientific disciplines. There is disagreement among scientists as to what the essential practices are that allow scientific concepts within a scientific discipline to expand and evolve. One group looks at conceptual expansion as something that is being constrained by rational practices. Another group, however, suggests that conceptual expansion proceeds along the lines of ‘everything goes’. The goal of this paper is to test whether scientific concepts expand in a rational way within the field of organizational behaviour. We will use organizational climate and culture as examples. The essence of this study consists of two core concepts: one within organizational climate and one within organizational culture. It appears that several conceptual variations are added around these core concepts. The variations are constrained by rational scientific practices. In other terms, there is evidence that the field of organizational behaviour develops rationally 相似文献

FDI and the relevance of spatial linkages: do third-country effects matter for Dutch FDI? 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The aim of this paper is to test for the relevance of spatial linkages for Dutch (outbound) foreign direct investment (FDI).
We estimate a spatial lag model for Dutch FDI to 18 host countries. After controlling for fixed effects, we find for our sample
period 1984–2004 that third-country effects matter. Apart from our benchmark spatial lag model, we also estimate various alternative
models by looking at European host FDI countries only, by dividing FDI into industry and services FDI, and by estimating a
spatial error model.

Knowledge spillovers and new ventures’ export orientation 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Dirk?De?Clercq Jolanda?HesselsEmail author André?van?Stel 《Small Business Economics》2008,31(3):283-303
We draw on the knowledge spillover literature to suggest that a country’s proportion of export-oriented new ventures represents
an outcome of knowledge spillovers that stem from foreign direct investment (FDI) and international trade (export spillovers)
as well as a source of knowledge spillovers (entrepreneurship spillovers). To test the hypotheses, we use macrolevel data
from 34 countries during the period 2002–2005. We find that the relationship between FDI and international trade on the one
hand and a country’s proportion of export-oriented new ventures on the other differs for higher- and lower-income countries.
In addition, a country’s proportion of export-oriented new ventures affects the subsequent emergence of new businesses.
