An Entrepreneurial System View of New Venture Creation

This paper reports the results of a two-phase study that explores new venture creation within the context of an entrepreneurial system. First, a genealogy of high-technology companies is presented depicting a high spin-off rate resulting from the presence of seven incubator organizations. Second, semantic structure analysis ( Spradley 1980 ) based on semi-structured interviews with founders is used to develop a taxonomy. This taxonomy depicts the relationship among components in one entrepreneurial system, Boulder County, Colorado, that encourages, supports, and enhances regional entrepreneurial activity. Findings indicate that incubator organizations, spin-offs, informal and formal networks, the physical infrastructure, and the culture of the region are related uniquely and interact to form a system conducive for dense high-technology entrepreneurial activity. Additionally, greater rates of new venture formation were found following critical moments in the life of incubator organizations.     

Hybrid Choice Models: Progress and Challenges

We discuss the development of predictive choice models that go beyond the random utility model in its narrowest formulation. Such approaches incorporate several elements of cognitive process that have been identified as important to the choice process, including strong dependence on history and context, perception formation, and latent constraints. A flexible and practical hybrid choice model is presented that integrates many types of discrete choice modeling methods, draws on different types of data, and allows for flexible disturbances and explicit modeling of latent psychological explanatory variables, heterogeneity, and latent segmentation. Both progress and challenges related to the development of the hybrid choice model are presented.     

TOWARDS A VALUE-NEUTRAL POSITIVE SCIENCE OF ACCOUNTING: A REPLY

The main criticisms of "A Value-Neutral Positive Science of Accounting" relate to three issues: (1) The status of scientific knowledge and the 'superiority' of the scientific method; (2) The role of empirical research; and (3) The values implicit in scientific research. These are both fundamental and controversial, and will hopefully be pursued further in the accounting literature. However, debate in terms of cliches aimed at a manufactured stereotype of science, and individual values, is unlikely to be productive. This Reply attempts to show that such criticisms are exaggerated misrepresentations of the original paper in the hqte that future contributors will consider them more thoroughly.     

An equilibrium existence theorem without complete or transitive preferences

The Walrasian equilibrium existence theorem is reproved without the assumptions of complete of transitive preferences.     

Sophisticated voting with information for two voting functions

The necessary and sufficient conditions for a single rational voter to reveal a sophisticated preference ordering under the Borda and Kemeny voting functions are presented. Algorithms for determining the dominant strategic ballot are given for a key voter having perfect information regarding the true preference orderings of the other voters. An example illustrating the stated concepts is provided.     

A decision support system for area-wide water quality planning†

The Generalized Planning System is presented as the framework for implementation of a decision support system for area-wide water quality planning. Special attention is given to the method of data organization, a method of system interface for nonprogramming planners, and to the need for system flexibility that allows adaptation to changing conditions.
