Good information is necessary for markets to allocate resources efficiently. Tobacco is a demerit good; smoking endangers smokers but also exerts externalities on non‐smokers. Public policies, however, foster misinformation, are contradictory and damage public health. Current policies also deny feedback from the tobacco industry and reduce consumer information about tobacco products that could substantially reduce the harmful effects of smoking.  相似文献

This article revolves around the debate surrounding the lack of a coherent definition for corporate social responsibility (CSR). I make use of Jacques Derrida’s theorizing on contested meaning to argue that CSR’s ambiguity is actually necessary in light of its functional role as a “supplement” to corporate profit-seeking. As a discourse that refuses to conclusively resolve the tension between profit-seeking and prosociality, CSR expresses an important critical perspective which demands that firms act responsibly, while retaining the overall corporate frame of shareholder supremacy. CSR does this by ambivalently affirming both profit-seeking and prosociality, a necessary contradiction. Attempts to reduce CSR’s ambiguity can thus only succeed by undermining its viability as a normative discourse that captures how certain elements of society understand how firms should act. The analysis suggests that greater scholarly attention is needed with regard to the material discursive environments within which discourses such as CSR are deployed. A discursive approach to research could thus benefit future practitioners, who have to act according to fluid standards of responsibility that cannot be authoritatively defined, but which can be better understood than they are at present.  相似文献

Abstract Debate over the effects of public versus private health care finance persists in both academic and policy circles. This paper presents the results of a revealed preference laboratory experiment that tests how characteristics of the public health system affect a subject's willingness‐to‐pay (WTP) for parallel private health insurance. Consistent with the theoretical predictions of Cuff et al. (2010), subjects’ average WTP is lower and the size of the private insurance sector smaller when the public system allocates health care based on need rather than randomly and when the probability of receiving health care from the public system is high.  相似文献

This article gives some exploratory results from estimating a consumer surplus type equation which features a number of economic and demographic variables as regressors. We calculate an income elasticity for the maximum surplus that individuals would ever perceive themselves to be getting by being allowed to buy at a set price. The results also show that those who attend the cinema are significantly less inclined to generate a surplus in flexible price events markets whilst young adults offer to pay quite a large amount more for their heavily desired entertainment. This suggests that part of the burden of a shift in ticket pricing methods may be borne by the parents of young adults.  相似文献

During the Bretton Woods era, OECD countries grew at historicallyunprecedented rates. This Golden Age has many possible explanations,ranging from the return to liberal policies in internationaltrade to a backlog of profitable growth opportunities afterthe neglect of the 1930s and wartime damage. Eichengreen (1996)has argued that the proximate cause of the rapid growth washigh investment, and that this high investment was made possibleby certain institutions that were particularly well suited toreconstruction and growth. On the domestic side, these institutionsled to high investment rates and moderate wage claims. Thispaper interprets the interaction between unions and firms asa coordination game. The risk-dominant equilibrium is selectedvia a global game argument. The effects on farm incomes and consumer prices of elimination of the special export program and both an immediate and phased elimination of the direct subsidy with compensatory increases in support prices are examined. The supply of milk is assumed to be verticle at a level determined by the amount of quota which in turn is set so that butter supplies and demand balance at the support price. The analysis then is concentrated on the demand side which is represented by the demands for 13 categories of dairy products at the consumer level. The demands are represented in a linear programming model to simulate changing relative prices of individual products caused by the changing support prices. Dropping the special export program unambiguously leads to gains in Canadian welfare. Both an immediate and phased reduction of the direct subsidy requires either a large increase in consumer prices or decrease in farm income. All policy alternatives require a reduction of quota. Gradually eliminating the direct subsidy has the advantage that growth in demand due increases in population and per capita incomes will offset the reduction of quota due to the policy. We examine the effect of options trading volume on the stock price response to earnings announcements over the period 1996–2007. Contrary to previous studies, we find no significant difference in the immediate stock price response to earnings information announcements in samples split between firms with listed options and firms without listed options. However, within the sample of firms with listed options stratified by options volume, we find that higher options trading volume reduces the immediate stock price response to earnings announcements. This conforms with evidence that stock prices of high options trading volume firms have anticipated and pre-empted some earnings information in the pre-announcement period. We also find that higher abnormal options trading volume around earnings announcements hastens the stock price adjustment to earnings news and reduces post-earnings announcement drift.  相似文献
