Abstract

Process tracing data help researchers understand how yellow pages advertisement characteristics influence consumer information processing behavior. In a laboratory experiment eye movement data were collected while consumers chose businesses from telephone directories. Consumers scan listings in alphabetic order. Their scan is not exhaustive. As a result, some ads are never seen. Consumers noticed more than 93% of the quarter-page display ads but only 26% of the plain listings. They perceived color ads before ads without color, noticed more color ads than noncolor ads, and viewed color ads 21% longer than equivalent ads without color. Also, they viewed 42% more bold listings than plain listings. Consumers spent 54% more time viewing ads for businesses they ended up choosing, which demonstrates the importance of attention for subsequent choice behavior.     

Some Clues about Near-Term Impact

It is argued that downloads may be useful as an indicators of the impacts journal articles make in their early years following publication. The 25 most-downloaded articles for the Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce for 2008 are presented. This gives some clues about foci of recent interests, and perhaps impacts, in the realm of multiparticipant computing.     

Creating interactive spreadsheets to provide immediate feedback

Features available with electronic spreadsheets enable accounting educators to create interactive spreadsheets that provide students with immediate feedback regarding the accuracy of their solutions. Providing immediate feedback using an answer-until-correct approach can help students acquire and retain knowledge. In this approach students open an incomplete spreadsheet and create formulas to complete the accounting problem. Correct solutions are denoted by a change in font color. Security features prevent students from locating the correct answers stored in an adjacent area. Problems illustrated in this paper relate to principles of financial accounting. However, interactive spreadsheets can also be used in other accounting courses such as managerial, cost, and intermediate accounting.     

HERD INVENTORY AND SLAUGHTER SUPPLY RESPONSE OF BOTSWANA BEEF CATTLE PRODUCERS

A statistical model composed of rational distributed lags was used to estimate cattle inventory and cattle slaughter in the livestock sector of the Republic of Botswana. The impact of range and biological conditions, government infrastructure, technology, and cattle prices were tested in the initial maintained hypotheses. Results revealed that a polynomial rational lag structure, or cyclical effect, characterised the behaviour of herd inventories specific to changes in cattle prices. Contemporaneous decisions to market slaughter cattle were affected by the long-term cycle as well as the more direct influence of slaughter prices and range conditions within a one to two year period. The responsiveness of these sectors to changes in cattle prices is qualified within the biological and climatic constraints, and customs of the tribal and commercial cattle producing economies. It appears that the significance of the price-elasticities stands in contrast to the findings of other studies.
