Buchanan and Tullok (The calculus of consent: logical foundations of constitutional democracy. University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, 1962) argued that the optimal k-majority rule should minimize the sum of external costs and decision costs. Dougherty et al. (Public Choice, 163(1–2):31–52, 2015) formalized their approach using various groups of voters. In this study, we analyze the optimal k-majority rule in terms of expected utility and compare our results to Dougherty et al. (2015), which focuses on costs alone. Specifically, we replace Buchanan and Tullock’s external cost function with an external utility function that accounts for both the benefits and costs of enacting proposals. We find that analyzing k-majority rules in terms of utility, rather than costs, affects the optima. Furthermore, in terms of utility, the optimal k-majority rule can vary depending on the group one expects to be in during a vote. With some interesting exceptions, individuals from groups that favor the proposal often find small k-majority rules optimal. Synopsis In his 1964 paper, William Hamilton wrote that inclusive fitness trumps direct fitness if, and only if, the effect of interactions among siblings on their parent’s fitness is ‘zero’. Kin selection models have succeeded only because they have ignored the fact that, if an altruist dies saving two siblings, the ‘zero impact on their parent’s fitness’ constraint is violated. Imagine a parent with three offspring. If two offspring drown, parental fitness is 1. On the other hand, if one altruistic offspring dies saving its two drowning siblings, parental fitness doubles to 2. Thus, direct fitness trumps inclusive fitness as an explanation for the evolution of altruism. In other words, parents that produce some portion of altruistic offspring willing to die to save some of their siblings (who would die without the intervention of the altruist) will realize greater fitness than parents producing no altruists. Skew selection, a bioeconomic extension of Michael Ghiselin’s (1974) parental exploitation model, is presented to explain the evolution of altruism from a direct fitness point of view. 相似文献

The analysis of trade-restricting policies under uncertainty has typically argued in favour of the specific tariff over alternative commercial policies such as the ad valorem tariff and the quota, when the raising of revenue and maintenance of consumer's welfare are the policy objectives. This paper reconsiders this result. It is demonstrated that, when the shape of the welfare probability distribution is considered explicitly, the quota may be the dominant trade-restricting policy. E-commerce not only has tremendous potential for growth but also poses unique challenges for both incumbents and new entrants.
By examining drivers of firm performance in e-commerce from a capabilities perspective, the authors conceptualize three firm
capabilities that are critical for superior firm performance in e-commerce: information technology capability, strategic flexibility,
and trust-building capability. The extent and nature of market orientation is conceptualized as a platform for leveraging
e-commerce capabilities. The authors test the effects of e-commerce capabilities on performance (e.g., relative profits, sales,
return on investment) using data from 122 e-brokerage service providers. The results indicate that information technology
capability and strategic flexibility affect performance given the right market orientation.

The authors’ research in Hungary during the period of transition to a market economy provides an opportunity to examine the
evolving relationships between consumer product knowledge and its antecedents, including advertising, personal search, interpersonal
sources, and brand experience. Their findings, based on survey data collected in Budapest in 1992 and 1998, indicate that
the market information variables explain more variance in consumer knowledge later rather than earlier in the transition.
Advertising is an important predictor of consumer knowledge later but not earlier in the transition, personal search is important
at both times, and interpersonal sources are not important in either time period; brand experience is negatively related to
knowledge earlier in the transition and positively related later in the transition. This study allows one to begin to understand
the boundary conditions associated with studies conducted in developed economies. Managerial implications for firms investing
in transitional economies are presented.

It is becoming increasingly apparent from the literature that marketers need to consider customer-level information when they
generate a marketing strategy for the firm. In this article, the authors develop a customer-focused framework that uses a
marketing strategy with an overall objective of maximized financial performance. This strategy is driven by seven customer-level
marketing tactics and shows how actual customer data can be used to generate an actionable marketing strategy leading to optimal
levels of profitability, customer equity, and shareholder value. In addition, the authors discuss a successful implementation
of this strategy for several business-to-business and business-to-consumer firms and offer insights as to how to customize
an implementation strategy for any firm, along with presenting potential challenges a firm may encounter during the implementation
process. Several suggestions for future research are offered to explore and harness this newly available evidence.

This article develops and tests a conceptual model of the transfer process whereby perceived similarity organized around shared
goals facilitates the transfer of knowledge and affect from a parent brand to an extension of that brand. Empirical results,
based on two well-known brands and two hypothetical product extensions for each brand, demonstrate that the availability of
well-formed, goal-derived categories associated with a parent brand establishes an organizing framework for consumers' assessments
of similarity thatfacilitates the transfer of consumer knowledge and attitude from the parent brand to a brand extension in
another product category. This facilitating effect of similarity does not occur in the absence of goal-derived categories.
The results also reveal how marketing communication can be used to facilitate the transfer process by framing similarity in
terms of common goals. Implications are discussed for the organization of consumer knowledge and affect across product categories
and for understanding prior research findings on brand extension.
