This article explores the implications of ‘networked’ and ‘flexible’ organisations for the work and skills of professionals/ Drawing on material from four different case studies, it reviews work that is outsourced (involving IT professionals and housing benefit caseworkers), work that is done by teachers contracted to a temporary employment agency and work organised through an inter‐firm network (chemical production workers). In each case work that was outsourced was managed very differently to that undertaken in‐house, with managerial monitoring replacing and reducing employees' discretion. New staff in these networks had fewer skills when hired and were given access to a narrower range of skills than their predecessors. By contrast, the production staff directly employed on permanent contracts in the inter‐firm network were given (and took) significant amounts of responsibility, with positive results for both their skills and the work processed. Yet, despite the negative impact they have on skills, outsourcing and subcontracting are a far more common means of securing flexibility than organisational collaboration. 相似文献

The St. John d'el Rey Mining Companywas a British mining company in Brazil. Its experiences demonstratethat, property rights were not under-specified; they were over-specifiedand varying provisions for rights were mutually inconsistent.Precise laws protected capital investment to such an extentthat dissolving partnerships became problematic. Conclusions This study has analyzed the long run determinants of the ratio of currency to M1 and M2 over the period 1920–80. For both ratios, its results confirm Cagan's well-known findings on the importance of deposit yields and tax rates. Unlike Cagan, who did not attempt to construct a proxy variable for the ratio of currency-intensive to total transactions, the ratio of spending on nondurables and services to total bank clearings was used in this study as such a proxy and found to be a better explanatory variable than expected real per capita income. At times, movements in this variable were an important contributor to changes in both money ratios. In addition, movements in the ratio of teenagers to total population, a variable not considered by Cagan, had a role in explaining the 1961–73 rise in C/M1.The finding that alterations in the tax rates change the money multiplier, and hence the money stock, in the opposite direction serves as an offset to the argument advanced recently that tax cuts, since they may increase the demand for money as well as (more familiarly) the rate of desired spending, may actually be contractionary.The views expressed in this paper are those of the authors and not those of the Congressional Research Service or the Library of Congress. 相似文献

A web‐based survey was completed by 130 faculty and staff from a university located in the south‐eastern United States. The purposes of this study were to investigate: (a) consumer characteristics related to online shopping; (b) benefits of online shopping as perceived by online shoppers; and (c) concerns about online shopping as perceived by non‐online shoppers. Responses were analysed using SPSS for tests of chi‐square. Findings suggest that the differences between online shoppers and non‐online shoppers correspond with Rogers’ 1 categories of adopters, and that the educational needs of consumers also differ based on their previous experience with online shopping. 相似文献

This paper explores the link between cultural behavioural traits, the potential effect of industrialisation and multiple domains of job satisfaction, utilising survey data collected from public and private service sector employees in Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya in the North East Region (NER) of India. Results from ordered probit regressions demonstrate a statistically significant impact of both, extrinsic and intrinsic moderating factors on Indian employees' job satisfaction. In view of India's widely reported collectivistic cultural traits, which are assumed to emphasise primarily the importance of extrinsic job aspects, our findings are surprising. They suggest that in the wake of India's significant economic developments the impact of intrinsic job rewards has played ‘catch-up’ with that of their extrinsic counterparts. As such, the study provides evidence in support of embracing human resource management (HRM) practices that incentivise Indian employees not only through their traditional methods aimed at extrinsic job rewards but also by explicitly addressing individual ambitions, needs and aspirations. 相似文献
