A point optimal test for heteroscedastic disturbances

A new test for additive heteroscedasticity in the disturbances of the linear regression model is proposed. Power functions of various forms of the new test are compared empirically with those of currently favoured tests for a range of heteroscedastic models. The results highlight the power advantage of a test which is MP1 at a central point in the alternative hypothesis parameter space. The main conclusion is that the recommended version of the new test is generally more powerful than existing tests against medium and severe heteroscedasticity, whereas the King and Szroeter tests perform better against weak heteroscedasticity.

The paper evaluates tax policy options designed to reduce distortions to savings behavior that occur when administered interest rates are set beneath market equilibrium levels. While the removal of controls on interest rates might be the best option, political, legal or institutional circumstances might well preclude this solution. It suggests that consumption (or sales) taxes can be designed so that, in the short term, the rate of return to saving can be changed to approximate the market-determined interest rate. The main advantage of the measure is that it can provide (a) time to develop appropriate legal and institutional structures for financial deregulation, and (b) an additional policy instrument that allows the burden of adjustment, in a stabilization policy setting, to be distributed over more than one instrument.     

Impact of narrative versus factual print ad copy on product evaluation: The mediating role of ad message involvement

The relative impact of narrative versus factual message strategies on product evaluation was explored. The role of ad message involvement (AMI) as a mediator was also investigated. Narrative versus factual print ad copy resulted in more favorable product evaluations for two fictitious brands, one each from the cell phone and sunglasses product categories. Narrative print ad copy also elicited higher ad message involvement which, in turn, mediate the differential effect of narrative versus factual copy on product evaluations. The study demonstrated one of the major pathways through which the relatively more persuasive effects of narrative versus factual print ad copy appears to operate. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
