A two-period model in which communication restrictions preclude the usual revelation representation is analyzed, and the communication policies take on the appearance of “income smoothing.” The driving force is the information content of the “smoothed” or manipulated series, relative to its counterpart were manipulation not possible. Various possibilities arise, depending on the underlying stochastic structure: performance measure manipulation might be socially efficient, or not; and when it is best to invite and motivate this manipulation, the optimal policy itself can take on a variety of forms. 相似文献

Do larger markets offer better products? The question has implications for theories of cities and theories of market organization. We document that in the restaurant industry, where quality is produced largely with variable costs, the range of qualities on offer increases in market size. In daily newspapers, where quality is produced with fixed costs, the average quality of products increases with market size, but the market does not offer much additional variety as it grows large. This study compared attitudes toward money of Mexican- and Anglo-American consumers. Based on the Hispanic/Mexican-American literature, hypotheses were generated for four dimensions of a money attitude scale (MAS) developed by Yamauchi and Templer (1982). Mexican-Americans were found to have lower scores on a Retention/Time dimension that reflects willingness to delay spending money to achieve gratification. Contrary to previous studies, Mexican-Americans were found to have lower scores on a Quality dimension, calling into question an assumption found in much of the literature that Hispanic consumers prefer high prestige goods/services. Hypotheses pertaining to Power/Prestige and Distrust/Anxiety dimensions were also not confirmed suggesting further reservations about Hispanic consumer characterizations found in the consumer behavior literature. 相似文献

Retail outlets and finance companies were the first businesses to offer consumer installment credit, and for many years they enjoyed a virtual monopoly in that area. This situation has changed. There has been a gradual but continual decrease in their percentage of market share, and a corresponding increase in that held by commercial banks and credit unions. Abstract. This paper examines the information content of revenue recognition rules in a series of environments, ranging from an abstract disclosure setting to one of disclosure in the presence of moral hazard and self-reporting by an informed agent. The emphasis is on conceptualization of recognition issues, ranging across financial and labor markets, and the simplification required to force the analysis into a workable and familiar model. It is shown that the class of elliptical distributions extend the Tobin 14 separation theorem, Bawa's 2 rules of ordering uncertain prospects, Ross's 12 mutual fund separation theorems, and the results of the CAPM to non-normal distributions, which are not necessarily stable. Further, the mean-covariance matrix framework is generalized to a mean-characteristic matrix framework in which the characteristic matrix is the basis for a spread or risk measure, and a generalized equilibrium pricing equation is arrived at.
