A BSTRACT . The study shows that French Canadians continue to suffer from entry discrimination in the National Hockey League. At the time of the draft, the future offensive performance of French Canadian (and European) players is underestimated. The addition of various measures of robustness and defensive play makes no difference. This study also takes into account the location of the teams that drafted the players. It seems that American teams discriminate against French Canadian players, while English Canada teams discriminate against Europeans. The teams from the Province of Quebec did not appear to discriminate in favour of French Canadians.  相似文献

This paper studies how the replacement rate, defined as the ratio of disposable income when unemployed to expected disposable income if beginning to work, affects individuals’ transition rate from unemployment. Linked register data, representing a local Finnish labour market in 1996, are analysed with piece-wise constant exponential hazard models. Results suggest that the effect of the replacement rate and, thus, of “unemployment traps”, is fairly modest. It does not seem to change with time spent unemployed. The impact on the transition rate into employment is lower than on the transition rate out of the labour force. Unemployment insurance recipients are found to be less sensitive to changes in the replacement rate than are unemployment assistance recipients.  相似文献

This paper examines the relative efficiency of randomized complete block design as compared with that of completely randomized design. The most widely used measure of relative efficiency considers only the error variances of the two designs, therefore it does not provide the complete information concerning the sensitivity of the experiment in the final results. We study three alternative criteria related to the sensitivity issue and design planning consideration. The proposed relative measures employ the p -value, Scheffé confidence interval estimation and power of both designs. The distinct feature of this study is the focus on the estimated relative efficiency measures and their relation with the coefficient of partial determination between responses and block effects, given that treatment effects are present in the models. Furthermore, informative visual representations and numerical assessments of various aspects of their properties are also presented.  相似文献

In this study, we demonstrate that the average reporting lag of Belgian interim reports is large but has decreased slightly over the years 1991–1998. Contrary to US findings, we show that the disclosure of interim reports containing bad (good) news is not systematically delayed (speeded up). Interim reports are value relevant since good (bad) news, according to a naïve earnings expectations model, induces positive (negative) abnormal returns. The 'short term' timeliness of the information disclosure, however, seems not to matter at all.  相似文献

This paper argues that standards of living are a meaningful measure of competitiveness. It views comparisons with the performance of other regions, and in particular with the US, as an evaluation of the distance to the “technology frontier” and the potential for improvements. Productivity and external competitiveness developments are reviewed from a sectoral perspective. A forward looking dimension is given by a brief presentation of the revised “Lisbon Strategy” and the new industrial policy approach proposed by the European Commission.   相似文献

The debate concerning permissibility and use of options in Islamic finance is ongoing, and the issue is far from settled. Current analyses on this issue appear to focus on taking of unnecessary risks ( gharar), the perceived lack of a physical asset in an options contract, and the possibility of exploitation of the ignorant. To the extent that these factors are involved, options are not permitted under Islamic teachings (the Shariah). In this article, we investigate whether options may be permitted for hedging purposes in Islamic finance. We use equity options as an example in our analysis. After providing a brief overview of options markets, we review the existing literature and critically examine other work such as the religious decrees (fatwas). We also provide two examples, one each of call and put options, to illustrate the managerial issue of use of options for hedging purposes. Our analysis shows that options may be permitted for hedging purposes in Islamic finance as long as the underlying economic activities are themselves permissible (halal) from an Islamic point of view. The analysis also indicates that one of the key issues is related to unnecessary risk taking. The avoidance or reduction of such risks in hedging situations is largely dependent on the settlement and clearing function of the exchanges trading options, which effectively provides a guarantee of delivery. Mutual consent for entering into or canceling contracts and the issue of intangible assets also play a role in determining if options are permissible under the Shariah. We conclude the article by urging experts of Islamic jurisprudence to understand the theory and mechanics of options and use group ijitihad (consensus opinion of Islamic scholars) in conjunction with academics and experts in financial markets and instruments on this vital issue in contemporary finance for the benefit of the Islamic world as well as those trading with the Islamic world. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

New Political Economy has something very important in common with welfare economics: its focus on static, technical efficiency criteria to judge the rationality of a social, political or economic order. This often leads theorists to perceive their objects of research as well-defined problems to which clear-cut solutions can be found and prescribed as policy proposals, addressed at the policymaker or the democratic sovereign. This perspective frequently excludes important empirical phenomena from the research agenda. Although, for example, certain well-defined informational asymmetries are frequently modeled, fundamental knowledge problems such as ignorance of the true model of the economy are usually ignored. In the present paper, this approach is criticized from a Hayekian point of view, with an emphasis on the problems of "scientism" (i.e., the inappropriate transfer of methods from the natural to the social sciences) and irremediably imperfect knowledge, troubling both the agents in the theoretical model and the theorist. Furthermore, it is argued and illustrated with two examples that an extension of Public Choice's research agenda along Hayekian lines may be fruitful, because it leads to a fresh perception even of such problems that already have been extensively researched within the traditional framework.  相似文献

Does economic transition necessitate a profound change in the inter-industry wage structure? This paper argues that principles of wage determination in centrally planned economies were not basically different from those prevailing in market economies. Even if the center became involved in wage setting, reward for human capital and the compensating differential had to be taken into consideration. Moreover, market power led to rent-sharing via wage bargaining and efficiency wages. Hence, this paper claims that wages in socialist economies were determined by similar factors to those in market economies. This is supported by comparison of inter-industry wage structures between socialist and capitalist countries and by results of the estimation of the wage equation for Poland. There is a noticeable degree of similarity in wage structures generated by both systems.I started this paper when I was a research visitor at the Centre of Economic Performance, London School of Economics and completed it when I was a visiting fellow at Princeton University.
