In the Great Recession, the automotive industry has been one of the hardest hit sectors, along with the housing and financial industries. As the largest and most cyclical consumer spending sector, the automotive sector has historically been important for economic recovery after every postwar recession. Will it be the same this time? Will consumer demand for new vehicles stay depressed in a prolonged deleveraging process? In this paper, we present an analysis of the fundamental factors that determine long-term vehicle demand, together with the factors that drive its cyclical fluctuations. We believe the recovery of the auto industry is inevitable and that it will again become an important driver of the mid-term U.S. recovery. However, a quick return to the precrisis peak is unlikely, given the slow recovery of employment and housing markets and higher energy prices. 相似文献

This study examines the relative competitiveness of online and physical bookstores. Online bookstores have the advantage of being able to provide a wide range of books while minimizing inventory costs, but customers must wait several days for their books. Physical bookstores allow consumers to immediately obtain their books, but consumers must pay a transportation cost to visit the store. We can find the condition such that online bookstores charge a lower price than physical bookstores and take a larger market share, and attract a higher proportion of consumers who prefer variety. The aim of this article is to understand customers’ perceptions regarding the project management performance and the perceived benefits if the customers perceived the supplier to be the best or the second-best systems delivery project supplier. This research investigates 2,191 system delivery projects in the facilities management industry. Exploratory factor analysis was employed on the project management variables. The testing of the hypotheses was done with partial least squares (PLS) structural equation modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS. The findings show a significant relationship between the commissioning and the perceived benefits, independent of whether the company was perceived to be best or second best in the industry. The proposal stage was perceived to be significantly related to perceived benefits provided by the outcome of the project (the product) when the company was the second-best supplier. Inherent structure in systems delivery projects included three phases, consisting of the proposal, installation, and commissioning. Also, the perceived project management performance in the commissioning stage was significantly related to the perceived benefits provided by the outcome of the project (the product) when the supplier was perceived to be the best and the second best in the industry. This case has been developed for an introductory management accounting course at the undergraduate and MBA levels. Although the setting is relatively simple, it illustrates several management accounting issues that are relevant to firms of every size that produce a product or service under competitive pressures and capacity constraints. The case also integrates several topics that are often viewed as abstract by the students. Specifically, it deals with the concepts around cost‐volume profit analysis in a realistic environment, the tension between short‐term and long‐term decisions, discounted cash flow analysis, the impact of managerial incentives and compensation on decision making and the impact of operating leverage on profitability. The case was used successfully several times in an introductory course at the MBA level. Surveys of the students reveal that the case has contributed significantly to their learning and has clarified the concepts introduced in the case. 相似文献

The Role of Auditing in Corporate Governance in Australia and New Zealand: A Research Synthesis 下载免费PDF全文
Corporate governance is of growing importance in Australia, New Zealand and all over the world. Corporate governance interacts with auditing and it is useful to understand how corporate governance and auditing affect companies. A related issue is whether better governance is a substitute for auditing or a complement. Previous studies of that issue have had mixed results. This review article provides a synthesis of Australian and New Zealand research about corporate governance and auditing that assesses what has been found and examines issues that can be explored using multiple studies. We conclude that despite extensive research, there is still considerable uncertainty about how corporate governance mechanisms are related to auditing and how auditing is associated with corporate governance. We conclude that recommendations for better governance (beyond a minimum level) are not yet supported by evidence. The results are intended to be helpful in providing advice about policy in Australia and New Zealand, and in determining directions for new research. 相似文献

The aim of this study is to understand more about how identification of international opportunities differs between native and immigrant entrepreneurs. Based on a survey of 116 immigrant and 864 native Norwegian entrepreneurs with newly registered firms, we show that immigrant entrepreneurs are more likely to identify international opportunities than native entrepreneurs are. We reveal important differences in the identification process between native and immigrant entrepreneurs. Whereas general human capital has a significant positive effect on international opportunity identification for native entrepreneurs, we cannot find the same effect among immigrant entrepreneurs. Moreover, although financial capital positively influences international opportunity identification among native entrepreneurs, the same effect is significantly negative among immigrant entrepreneurs. Based on these findings, we conclude that native and immigrant entrepreneurs do not utilise the same resources to identify international opportunities. This study contributes to the literature on international entrepreneurship by documenting significant differences in how native and immigrant entrepreneurs identify international opportunities. It also contributes to immigrant entrepreneurship literature by bringing the opportunity-based view of entrepreneurship into the field. 相似文献

Although many studies report positive effects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on customer attitudes, recent literature shows that the effectiveness of CSR initiatives critically varies among consumers, brands, and companies. Using 1375 customer responses about 93 brands in 18 industries, we examine how perceived CSR relates to customer attitudes and actual retention 2 years later, and specifically how this relationship may be contingent on brand characteristics. Our results indicate that perceived CSR can indeed compensate for the absence of a strong brand or smaller advertising budgets, but not for lack of innovativeness. Companies that simultaneously do good and innovate are rewarded with more positive customer attitudes and higher levels of customer retention. 相似文献

The relation between consumers’ attitude and behaviour is of importance in designing marketing and public policy measures.
However, many empirical studies find only low effects of attitudes on behaviour. In this paper, we suggest that the conflicting
evidence on the attitude-behaviour link is partly due to only extreme attitudes impacting behaviour. That is, possible non-linearities
not detected by standard linear models could occur in the relationship between attitudes and behaviour. We present and compare
alternative model specifications to assess the non-linear relationship. We test our view using empirical examples relating
to the link between environmental concerns and the purchase of organic products, and the link between privacy concerns and
the possession of loyalty cards. We find strong support for the appearance of a non-linear relationship between environmental
concern and the purchase of organic products, while only weak support for such a relationship between privacy concern and
the possession of loyalty cards.

As highly influential health consumers, the importance of the patient's voice is portrayed in the literature, leading to new directions in heath policy and practice. The authors' experience of patient partnership in the context of medical education has provided us with an opportunity to develop an understanding of what patient partnership in education should be about and how this can be implemented in a sustainable manner within undergraduate curriculum. This viewpoint outlines the context for our philosophy of providing students with the opportunity to engage with patients' stories and needs, and to graduate students ready to conduct consultations in a patient centred manner. The Patient Partner Program is the vehicle by which this teaching and learning approach occurs. The Patient Partner Program recruits actual volunteer community patients to be educationally engaged with senior medical students, participating in regular weekly small group teaching encounters. The contribution of these patients is significant and there is evidence that patients themselves recognize the importance of their role in the programme. We believe the strength of the Patient Partner Program lies in the nurturing of relationships and the engagement of those involved. The challenges of achieving and maintaining true patient partnership are acknowledged including the students' perception of their learning needs as they move towards their junior doctor role, and providing students with meaningful formative feedback. These challenges should not be deterrents for pursuing partnership with patients in an educational setting. 相似文献
