Understanding the factors related to concerns over generically engineered food products: are national differences real?

Along with the rapid introduction of genetically engineered (GE) foods into the marketplace have come concerns about possible risks associated with this new technology. This study expands on previous research by exploring the relationships between certain sociodemographic, attitudinal and behavioural variables and North American college students’ levels of concern over GE foods. Six index scales are created from the data and a series of anova s are conducted, and displayed visually using bar graphs, to examine the relationships between the explanatory variable and the students’ levels of concern. The findings indicate that attitudinal and behavioural variables should be included in future models for predicting levels of concern for GE foods in addition to the sociodemographic variables currently used.     

BUSINESS ETHICS IN RUSSIA: Business Ethics in a New Russia

As indicated in the previous article, a Russian-sponsored conference on business ethics was recently held in Moscow. Another participant from the USA, Professor Joanne B. Ciulla, comments here on what could prove to be a new beginning for business in Russia. Professor Ciulla is an Associate Editor of this Review and occupies the Coston Family Chair in Leadership and Ethics at the University of Richmond, Virginia.     

ESTIMATING THE IMPACT OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL GAMES ON LOCAL AIR POLLUTION

Professional sporting events attract millions of fans to urban areas each year as they cheer on their favorite teams. While benefits, such as increased tax revenues and economic development, are often cited as reasons to host a professional sports franchise, the public and private costs receive much less attention. This paper uses air quality readings from the Environmental Protection Agency and Major League Baseball schedules to estimate the impact of Major League Baseball games on local air pollution. The results suggest that attendance at a Major League Baseball game has a statistically significant but negligible impact on local air pollution. (JEL Q53, R11)     

Accounting for postretirement benefits: early adopters of SFAS 106

A study of companies that adopted SFAS 106 early reveals the companies generally have not funded retiree health benefits. The timing of a firm's adoption of the accounting standard is affected by a number of variables specific to that firm.     

Stakeholder dialogue and organisational learning: changing relationships between companies and NGOs

This article presents a critical examination of the process of stakeholder dialogue in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) field. It utilises data from a three-year research project into stakeholder dialogue processes to discuss three central themes: first, what is meant by the term 'dialogue', both from a theoretical perspective and from its practical application within CSR; second, the challenges of creating effective dialogue; and third, measuring and assessing the potential outcomes of dialogue. In providing a critical overview of these themes, the article examines the nature of organisational learning through stakeholder engagement and dialogue. It questions the motives behind engagement in dialogue and highlights some of the potential challenges for organisational learning posed by opting for a stakeholder dialogue approach. It argues that organisations engaging in stakeholder dialogue must have a clear understanding of the implications of undertaking a dialogue process and have a long-term perspective regarding the outcomes and learning likely to emerge from it. While stakeholder dialogue may produce significant results, it is argued, many of these may be difficult to quantify on a short-term basis.     

What helps? Women engineers' accounts of staying on

We have considerable understanding of the obstacles that women engineers encounter and the reasons that they leave the field, but we know less about what enables them to remain. Adopting an interpretivist approach, this article examines how a group of British women engineers in two FTSE 100 companies account for “staying on” in their male‐dominated work settings. We delineate four specific forms of help that facilitate women's retention in the field. We argue that exposure to help leads to women developing a habitus that enables them to continue working in engineering. To conclude, we draw on our findings to outline HR practices that will facilitate supportive relationships in the workplace and pave the way towards developing more positive organisational climates.
