Agricultural Industrialization: A Metaeconomics Look at the Metaphors by Which We Live

Agriculture continues to be driven by rapid technological change on the base of a particular kind of value system. This path produces an abundance and variety of high-quality food and success for many. It also produces externalities, not the least of which is the sense of gloom among youth who might otherwise pursue food system careers. Perhaps we need to be carefully examining the values implicit within the invisible hand, subjecting it to scientific scrutiny. One alternative is a kind of metaeconomics that focuses on moral inquiry, recognizing both a self-interest and a joint others-interest in the outcomes.

This article is concerned with British trade union membership statistics. It provides three different estimates of trade union density and considers their meaning and significance. It also assesses the reliability of union membership figures, and finally it provides fresh data on the unemployed membership of trade unions.     

Reinforcement versus balance response in sequential choice

Psychologists often explore the impact of one act on a subsequent related act. With an eye to the marketing literature, this paper explores two properties of sequential choices that involve the resolution of competing goals. Reinforcement occurs when the goals driving the first choice are made stronger by that choice and result in a congruent subsequent choice. Balance occurs when the first choice satisfies or extinguishes the goals that led to the original decision, producing an incongruent subsequent choice. This review examines a number of psychological frameworks that account for reinforcement or balance responses in sequential choice and identifies theoretically relevant moderating variables that lead to either response.     

Broadband and contributions to economic growth: Lessons from the US experience

The connection between broadband deployment and economic prosperity in the United States has garnered public attention due to stimulus plan funding authorized in February 2009 for broadband planning and deployment initiatives. The importance of innovation for a nation's economic well-being is fairly well understood. Through a literature survey, this article analyzes the connection between information and communications technologies and economic growth, as well as the connection between broadband and economic growth. There appears to be a positive economic impact from expanded broadband deployment and adoption. However, various research challenges including methodological problems and access to sufficiently granular data have prevented the authors from drawing more definitive conclusions from the US broadband experience. Another finding is the time lag for businesses to effectively exploit innovative broadband applications.
