To help understand what enhances the prospects for heterodox work to have strong research impact, this article analyzes the pool of articles published in the Review of Social Economy in the past 15 years, aiming to identify what differentiates well‐cited articles from others. Well‐cited papers tend to be in areas of core concern in social economics (labor, health, social theory) and attract attention in related social sciences and policy fields. Yet about half the articles published in RoSE are not cited in another scholarly journal within three years of publication, suggesting that, as well done and interesting as these papers may be, problems like narrow focus seem to limit their influence on other people's work. The article's results suggest that increasing the impact of heterodox work requires articles to be interesting and accessible to intentionally broad audiences, and to prompt people to change their thinking. Better still if they open up channels of communication between diverse communities of scholars that are likely to be sustained.  相似文献

Nigeria has experienced high fertility and rapid populationgrowth for at least the past thirty years. Only recently havepublic authorities launched efforts to promote contraceptiveuse. In this article, individual women are linked to the characteristicsof the nearest health facility, pharmacy, and source of familyplanning to assess the relative importance of women's socioeconomicbackground and the characteristics of nearby services on contraceptiveuse. The results suggest that the limited levels of female schooling(and probably other factors affecting women's opportunity costof time) are constraining contraceptive use, especially in ruralareas. Another major constraint to increased contraceptive useis the low availability of family planning services in Nigeria.Broader availability of the pill and other methods in pharmaciesand of injectables and intrauterine devices (IUDs) in healthfacilities is likely to raise contraceptive use. Outpatientor consultation fees at nearby health facilities do not appearto be constraining demand for modern contraceptive methods.  相似文献

The enormous risk of commercializing inventions is not captured by standard valuation models and can cause their results to be wildly misleading. As a consequence, the valuation results seem irrelevant to managers and investors, and the models are not used in key business decisions. This article is about building relevant valuation models for patents and early-stage technologies.
The importance of valuing innovation goes beyond the details of dueling models. Numerous academic studies have placed innovation at the center of economic growth. Improved valuation models for patents and early-stage technologies can help to attract capital and facilitate transactions, thereby strengthening incentives for innovation.
As this review demonstrates, however, valuing patents and early-stage technologies is a difficult problem with no easy answer. One must choose and then customize a model to match the salient features of the application—and even then, the analysis will often provide at best a range of possible values. But even if quantitative real options models are likely to be of limited use in many cases, real options thinking has a major role to play in both "framing" the valuation and guiding the management of patents and early-stage technologies.  相似文献

Many employers have begun moving toward health care consumerism strategies designed to encourage employees to take more responsibility for their health care and the cost of that care. Recent surveys suggest ways employers can ensure their consumerism strategies succeed in engaging employees and, ultimately, encourage employees to change their behavior. This article describes what those surveys reveal about employer and employee perspectives on consumerism and suggests steps employers can take to align their interests with those of their employees in order to manage the demand for and use of health care.  相似文献

There are a number of compelling reasons to build a strategic supply chain map. However, widely accepted conventions for this kind of mapping do not yet exist. The strategic map provides a tool for linking corporate strategy to supply chain strategy and for helping to manage and modify the supply chain structure. Before the discipline addresses the process of building strategic supply chain maps, there is a need for mapping conventions and a framework for categorizing strategic supply chain maps.  相似文献

If a manager is evangelical, does it color the style he uses in his relationship with his subordinates? The paper sketches briefly the two familiar, historical ethical positions... the Protestant ethic and humanism and relates them to two styles of management. Then it points up the recent healthy growth of the evangelical movement, and the basic beliefs of evangelicals; then relates elements of these beliefs to the manager. A comparison of the three management ethics (Protestant, humanist, and evangelical) suggests some differences in the characteristics of managers who follow each ethic. There is increased evidence of the effect of the evangelical ethic in political, medical, and judicial life. Is it not logical to assume it is also affecting business and management?  相似文献

A bstract . Fringe benefits have increased rapidly during recent decades. While determinants of manufacturing workers' fringes have been investigated, little information is available about those of nonmanufacturing workers. In this study we investigate factors that determine the levels of fringes of office and nonoffice workers provided by private-sector nonmanufacturing establishments. The factors are classified by characteristics of employees (such as income, marginal tax rate, union status ), of firms (such as size, location and industry ), and other variables. Using regression analysis we find employee income, marginal tax rate, union status and firm size consistently and positively related to fringe benefits. Other variables'coefficients in the equation usually possess the sign predicted by the model but sometimes do not attain statistical significance at conventional levels. We conclude that economic models of fringe benefits accurately represent behavior in nonmanufacturing establishments.  相似文献
