American economic relations with the Federal Republic of Germany and with Japan

Disagreement on appropriate policies to reduce the American balance of payments deficit has been a major source of friction between the US, on the one hand, and the Federal Republic of Germany and Japan, on the other. Against this background Professor Bronfenbrenner Presents a theoretical analysis of how deficit countries may proceed to solve their problems, passing on to point out, in terms of this general analysis, what the US is doing and what Germany and Japan would like it to do.

     

A simulation model for evaluating a set of emergency vehicle base locations: development, validation, and usage.

This paper describes our experiences in developing a simulation model for evaluating a set of emergency response vehicle base locations. The project was undertaken jointly by the University of Arizona and the Tucson Fire Department. The issues of model development, data collection, model validation, and experimentation are discussed. The critical nature of the problem and the clients' lack of experience with mathematical models, made model validation the major step in gaining user acceptance. We show that looking solely at standard performance statistics such as the calls successfully serviced, may lead to the acceptance of an invalid model. We also show that the high level of detail used in many simulation models for evaluating base locations is unnecessary in the current case. An analysis evaluating two alternative sets of locations for the Tucson system is discussed.     

Bondholder Wealth Effects in Mergers and Acquisitions: New Evidence from the 1980s and 1990s

We examine the wealth effects of mergers and acquisitions on target and acquiring firm bondholders in the 1980s and 1990s. Consistent with a coinsurance effect, below investment grade target bonds earn significantly positive announcement period returns. By contrast, acquiring firm bonds earn negative announcement period returns. Additionally, target bonds have significantly larger returns when the target's rating is below the acquirer's, when the combination is anticipated to decrease target risk or leverage, and when the target's maturity is shorter than the acquirer's. Finally, we find that target and acquirer announcement period bond returns are significantly larger in the 1990s.     

INCOMPLETE DEMAND SYSTEMS AND SEMILOGARITHMIC DEMAND MODELS

The methodology of LaFrance and Hanemann for analysing the structure of incomplete demand systems is applied to models that are linear or logarithmic in quantities, prices and/or income. The structure of each model is presented when the implications of consumer choice theory are satisfied. The usefulness of the approach is illustrated. It is shown that considerable prior information is obtained from the theory of consumer choice when it is applied to this set of functional forms for demand equations.     

A systems approach to integrate manpower planning and operation

Manpower planning frequently involves aggregated planning. This paper addresses the importance of linking manpower planning with operational process. We developed a systems approach to integrate the gross level of manpower planning and the detailed level of policy execution. This integrated system could improve the effectiveness of policy making.     

Issues in Growing a Family Business: A Strategic Human Resource Model

The conceptual literature on family businesses suggests that family businesses have difficulty managing their human resources, especially when it concerns a family member or the transition from the founder to the successor. The authors empirically examined the assumptions raised in the conceptual literature regarding whether family businesses were experiencing human resource problems in growing their business and what factors enabled or constrained the ability of their businesses to grow. The authors used in-depth interviewing to collect data in order to emphasize the depth of the issue. Using content analysis with subject matter experts coding the data, the authors sought to mine the richness of data. Finally, the authors analyzed the data using Elliot Jaques' Stratified Systems Theory as a model to examine the strategic human resource issues and to draw some tentative conclusions.     

Reorienting consumer education using social learning theory: sustainable development via authentic consumer pedagogy

The paper illustrates the growing interest in understanding consumer behaviour through a social learning theory (SLT) lens, and explains the recently launched United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Then, the discussion turns to an overview of a recently developed ESD/SLT integrated theoretical framework, which is then applied to consumer education via an authentic pedagogy. The paper highlights the rich potential of authentic intellectual work in the form of observational learning by augmenting ESD within authentic consumer education curricula.     

The NHS: Quasi-market, Quasi-hierarchy and Quasi-network?

It has been argued that the British National Health Service (NHS) has moved from a hierarchical and bureaucratic organization to a market and, more recently, towards a network. The authors believe that this view is too simplistic: the three organizational forms have co-existed and continue to do so. It is more accurate to view moves over time as a changing mix between quasi-hierarchies, quasi-markets and quasi-networks.
