Using microdata from the 1998 and 1993 Nicaraguan Living Standards Measurement Survey, this paper analyzes the relative size and attractiveness of formal and informal sector employment. Switching regression models of the formal/informal sector employment choice indicate that education across years and gender are the primary determinants of formal sector participation. Furthermore, the formal sector is characterized by positive selection. The results for the informal sector are less definitive, but are also suggestive of positive selection. These findings imply that the informal and formal sectors in Nicaragua contribute positively to the overall economy by attracting those individuals best suited for (in)formal sector employment. 相似文献

This paper presents early evidence on the employment effects of state minimum wage increases enacted between January 2013 and January 2015. As of 2015, we estimate that relatively large minimum wage increases (defined as those exceeding $1) reduced employment among low‐skilled population groups by just over 1 percentage point. Smaller minimum wage increases, as well as increases linked to inflation indexation provisions, appear to have had much smaller (and possibly positive) effects on employment over our sample period. The estimates thus raise the potential importance of nonlinearities in the minimum wage's effects, which are consistent with standard models of the labor market. (JEL H11, J08, J23) 相似文献

Following the approach of the classic 1974 marital-role influence study of Davis and Rigaux, the present study focuses on
differences in decision making (i.e., joint, husband dominated, wife dominated) across 24 product categories as a function
of two key factors. These factors are stage of the decision process (i.e., problem recognition, information search, and the
final decision) and culture (People’s Republic of China and the United States). The Jacobson Marital-Role Egalitarianism Scale
is included to further assess individual differences in husband and wife traditionality-modernism. The major findings are
that emphasis on joint, husband-dominated, and wife-dominated decisions vary by stage and by stage-culture interaction. Practical
implications are presented with suggestions for future research.

Companies implement preferred supplier programs to reduce their vendor relationships to a reasonable few. Consequently, vendors
who do not effectively manage their customer-based relationships are strong candidates for deletion from a customer’s list
of long-term suppliers. The emergence of preferred supplier programs suggests that businesses are beginning to formally recognize
and reward differences between their qualified vendors. Vendor stratification is proposed as a framework for understanding
the evolution of preferred vendor programs. With the growing interest in relationship marketing, a study was conducted to
empirically examine the extent to which businesses use relationship quality perceptions to differentiate their qualified vendors.
The findings support the notion that relationship quality is a higher-order construct that can be used as a basis for developing
vendor stratification systems. The article concludes with a discussion of the managerial and research implications of the
study findings.

The existence of downward nominal wage rigidity has been abundantly documented, but what are its economic implications? This paper demonstrates that, even when wages are allocative, downward wage rigidity can be consistent with weak macroeconomic effects. Firms have an incentive to compress wage increases as well as wage cuts when downward wage rigidity binds. By neglecting compression of wage increases, previous literature may have overstated the costs of downward wage rigidity to firms. Using micro-data from the US and Great Britain, I find that the evidence for the compression of wage increases when downward wage rigidity binds. Accounting for this reduces the estimated increase in aggregate wage growth due to wage rigidity to be much closer to zero. These results suggest that downward wage rigidity may not provide a strong argument against the targeting of low inflation rates. 相似文献

We examine capital expenditures in multi-segment firms before and after the “perfect storm” that affected pension plans between 2000 and 2002, when bond yields and stock prices both fell precipitously. Our sample of firms went from having overfunded to underfunded pension plans as a result of the storm. We examine the segment-level relation between investment, Tobin's q, and cash flow both before and after the event. We find mixed evidence on the change in the relation between investment and q, which may be a result of measurement error in q. We find stronger evidence for the conclusion that after the pension storm, firms with underfunded pension plans directed more investment towards segments that produce higher cash flow. 相似文献

Do the low long‐run average returns of equity issuers reflect underperformance due to mispricing or the risk characteristics of the issuing firms? We shed new light on this question by examining how institutional lenders price loans of equity issuing firms. Accounting for standard risk factors, we find that equity issuing firms' expected debt return is equivalent to the expected debt return of nonissuing firms, implying that institutional lenders perceive equity issuers to be as risky as similar nonissuing firms. In general, institutional lenders perceive small and high book‐to‐market borrowers as systematically riskier than larger borrowers with low book‐to‐market ratios, consistent with the asset pricing approach in Fama and French (1993) . Finally, we find that firms' expected debt returns decline after equity offerings, consistent with recent theoretical arguments suggesting that firm risk should decline following an equity offering. Overall, our analysis provides novel evidence consistent with risk‐based explanations for the observed equity returns following IPOs and SEOs. 相似文献

This article provides an integrative conceptual framework and propositional inventory to help more fully understand this multifaceted phenomenon. It is proposed that there are three sources of entry-order information that work through various psychological processes and affect multiple decision process variables. This study was undertaken to investigate the inclusion of a kosher claim in an advertisement for a familiar and unfamiliar
brand of breakfast cereal. Results showed that, as hypothesized, for the familiar brand a kosher third party endorsement led
to significantly more kosher attribute-related thoughts, more favorable product attitude and greater purchase intention. For
the unfamiliar brand, no significant impact upon these dependent measures was observed given a kosher endorsement. Findings
are interpreted from a cognitive perspective regarding the salience of the kosher attribute in a product familiarity context.
