The effects of the Paris climate agreement on stock markets: evidence from the German stock market

We investigate the effects of the 2016 Paris Climate Agreement on the German stock market by considering the impact of 20 announcements pertaining to the Agreement on 17 industries. The event study methodology is used for this purpose, together with several robustness tests, such as the nonparametric rank test and non-parametric conditional distribution approach. The change in systematic risk following the announcements is captured by using various risk models. In general, we find that the Paris Climate Agreement is achieving its objectives in the short run. Our results show that the announcements affected polluting industries in terms of risk and return. Furthermore, we observe two distinct diamond risk structures when (1) Conference of the Parties (COP) 21 took place, and (2) the Agreement came into force.     

Archipelago's move towards exchange status: An analysis of Archipelago trading in NYSE and NASDAQ stocks

Archipelago began reporting trades and quotes to the Pacific Stock Exchange in 2002 for NYSE-listed securities and in 2003 for NASDAQ-listed securities. These events mark the time that Archipelago began migrating stocks from its ECN platform to the exchange platform, thereby becoming a stand-alone exchange. We examine the impact of becoming a stand-alone exchange on execution quality and market share of Archipelago to gain insight into its ability to compete for order flow in NYSE and NASDAQ stocks. We find that the change has a positive effect on Archipelago's execution quality for NYSE stocks, while it has a negative effect for NASDAQ stocks. A possible explanation is that Archipelago lost the large pool of liquidity that SuperMontage provided when it became a stand-alone exchange, and that loss may offset any gain associated with having exchange status. Overall, exchange status helped Archipelago slowly make headway in the NYSE-listed securities arena.     

The effects of entrepreneurial orientation and marketing information on the performance of SMEs

In this study, we investigate the effects of entrepreneurial orientation and marketing information on the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises. We build and test a causal model using data obtained from Singaporean entrepreneurs and find support for most of our hypotheses. The results indicate that entrepreneurial orientation plays an influential role on the acquisition and utilization of marketing information, and also has a direct effect on firm performance. The utilization of information regarding marketing mix decisions (particularly the Promotion and Place elements) positively affects firm performance, and it partially mediates the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance. The implications and future research directions are discussed.     

International briefing 18: training and development in Vietnam

Vietnam provides a typical case of an emerging economy, which has attempted to develop the country and join the world economic mainstream with a highly agricultural base, large and young labour force, and a dynamically growing private sector. After a long period of quantitative growth, it is now focusing on achieving quality of development, with a view to balance economic growth and quality of life improvement for its population. Education has been chosen to be the key plank in the successful implementation of this strategy. This article reviews the general socio‐economic background of the country, the high need for skilled labour, the structure of its educational system, the pitfalls at the high education level, and its strategy to overhaul the whole system in order to ensure quality from the input phase of the development process.     

Development of human resource management in Vietnam: A semantic analysis

The present study offers a logical understanding of the development of human resource management (HRM) in Vietnam over the past 30 years. While previous studies have examined the adoption of HR practices, there remains a need to understand the current state of HRM development in Vietnam. Using a semantic analysis approach, we systematically analyzed the themes and concepts from 100 journal articles related to HRM in Vietnam, selected from academic databases between 1984 and 2013. The main study findings show that the development of HRM is associated with the key stages of economic development in Vietnam.

Inflation Volatility with Regime Switching

This paper presents a new approach to model U.S. inflation dynamics by allowing regime switching in an unobserved components stochastic volatility framework. We use a modified particle filter to construct likelihood and estimate the model using MLE. The number of regimes is determined based on a bootstrap. We find that a model with three regimes and regime‐dependent constant volatilities has superior performance. In addition, we show that since 2000:II, U.S. inflation has entered a regime with moderate volatility where most of the volatility comes from transitory shocks.

ABSTRACT

The Solow growth model was extended to account for the graft by corrupt individuals from domestic savings, which could have been used for productive capital accumulation, the productive stock of capital to be augmented by foreign direct investment (FDI), and the expatriation by FDI international investors. The results indicate that higher levels of FDI inflows, savings rates, and more advanced technology embedded productive capital would result in higher steady-state per capita productive capital to labor ratio. The graft from domestic savings, expatriation of FDI, and growth rate of labor negatively affect steady-state per capita productive capital to labor ratio.     

Enhancing Business Relationship Quality Through Cultural Sensitization

An understanding of and adaptation to differences in culture in foreign countries can help exporters to reduce the distance between parties in an export relationship and enhance the quality of the relationship. This research investigates the impact of 2 cultural factors, namely, exporter cultural sensitivity and exporter ethnocentrism, on business relationship quality between transitioning economy–based exporters and their foreign importers and, subsequently, export performance. Using a systematic sample of 297 exporting firms in Vietnam we find that exporter cultural sensitivity has a positive effect, and ethnocentrism has a negative effect, on relationship quality. Furthermore, relationship quality enhances the performance of exporters.     

Antidumping Regulations: Anti‐Competitive and Anti‐Export

In a Bertrand duopoly model, it is shown that an antidumping regulation can be strategically exploited by the home firm to reduce the degree of competition in the home market. The home firm commits not to export to the foreign market which gives the foreign firm a monopoly in its own market. As a result the foreign firm will increase its price allowing the home firm to increase its price and its profits. If the products are sufficiently close substitutes then the higher profits in the home market are large enough to compensate for the loss of profits on exports.
