This paper reports on the results of a survey and qualitative analysis on the teaching of ‘Basic Design’ in schools of design
and architecture located in 22 countries. In the context of this research work, Basic Design means the teaching and learning
of design fundamentals that may also be commonly referred to as the Principles of Two- and Three-dimensional Design. The body
of knowledge associated with Basic Design may be regarded as part of the general theory of teaching and learning design as
practiced in many design schools and which has its origins in the classical design schools such as the Bauhaus. In the author’s
perception and practice, the pedagogy of Basic Design promotes a holistic, creative and experimental methodology that develops
the learning style and cognitive abilities of students with respect to the fundamental principles of design. This includes
an understanding of the elements of shape, colour, texture, light, and rhythm in a manner complementary but usually unrelated
to the common design methods teaching approach. As is well known among design practitioners, including architects and industrial
designers, a deep understanding of the purpose of these fundamental design elements and principles is still relevant to contemporary
design practice. The main objective of the research described in this paper was to determine the status and development of
Basic Design pedagogy in a significant number of contemporary design schools. On the basis of the results of two surveys conducted
in 2001–2002, this paper will identify and illustrate interesting aspects concerning the programmes and organisation of courses
delivered by teachers of ‘Basic Design’. This work will also survey the viewpoints of Basic Design teachers in elementary
years of design courses and of those teaching design through projects during the subsequent years of the same courses. Interestingly,
the design project teachers surveyed in this research expressed a desire to be more involved in the teaching of Basic Design
fundamentals which indicates strongly that Basic Design principles are still relevant in contemporary design education terms

In this pedagogical contribution the authors extend the traditional three-class tariff employed in the French passenger railway system with the more resonant story of the service quality variations associated with the three passenger classes of the ill-fated RMS Titanic. In doing so, they provide economics instructors with an opportunity to integrate the well-known motion picture Titanic (Cameron and Landau 1997) into the teaching of economics. This paper utilizes a thought experiment conducted by the Bank of Italy to estimate absolute and relative risk aversion along with absolute and relative prudence for a broad cross-section of Italian households. Upper and lower bounds are calculated for each parameter, and comparisons are made across socio-demographic groups. Despite the importance of supply chains within today's economy, we know little about how the knowledge of supply chains can contribute to superior performance at the firm level. Building on the resource-based view, knowledge-based view and strategic choice theory, we develop hypotheses linking two knowledge-driven supply chain phenomena (i.e., knowledge development capacity and intellectual capital), innovation–cost strategy, and action to firm-level performance. Using survey and archival data from 489 firms, we found that performance is influenced by how well knowledge development capacity and intellectual capital efforts complement alternative chain strategies. More specifically, each strategy type requires different constellations of knowledge development capacity and intellectual capital to enhance action and create superior firm performance. These results highlight the importance of supply chain phenomena for firm-level performance, and more broadly, the value of supply chains as a competitive weapon in contemporary firms. 相似文献

Measuring the unmeasurable: an application of uncertainty quantification to Treasury bond portfolios
We extract from the yield curve a new measure of fundamental economic uncertainty, based on McDiarmid’s diameter and related methods for optimal uncertainty quantification (OUQ). OUQ seeks analytical bounds on a system’s behaviour, even where aspects of the underlying data-generating process and system response function are not completely known. We use OUQ to stress test a simple fixed-income portfolio, certifying its safety—i.e. that potential losses will be ‘small’ in an appropriate sense. The results give explicit tradeoffs between: scenario count, maximum loss, test horizon, and confidence level. Abstract: We examine how the introduction of single-stock futures impacts short sale costs and short interest levels in the underlying spot market. We find that short selling in the underling securities declines, after futures are introduced, the cost of borrowing stock for short sales declines and the available unborrowed supply of lendable shares increases. These results are consistent with futures exchanges providing a low-cost substitute market for establishing short positions. Microstructure evidence also suggests that the lower cost and greater ease of short selling via futures markets draws informed traders from the spot market. 相似文献
