In this paper we introduce the stability threshold that quantifies the minimal returns to size sufficient to prevent credible secession threats by regions of the country. Severity of internal tension
has been linked to degree of polarization of citizens’ preferences and characteristics. We show that the increasing degree of polarization does not, in general, raise
the stability threshold, even though this hypothesis holds in some asymptotic sense. We also examine the question of the number
of smaller countries to be created if the unity of the large country is not sustainable, and investigate the link between
this number and the degree of the country polarization.

This paper addresses the problems of untruthful reporting, distortion and gaming of data and performance measures. It explores this relatively neglected area in the principal‐agent framework and also tries to assess whether the level of organizational decentralization has some effect on the scope of these problems. We develop a multi‐level game theoretical model showing that agents are key players, and that monitoring and sanctioning for gaming should be included in the explicit contract between principals and subordinates in every level of the organization. In this paper we investigate the question of how many coalitions of a given relative size would block a non-Warlasian allocation in large finite economies. It is shown that in finite economies, if a Pareto optimal allocation is bounded away from being Walrasian, then, for any two numbers α and β between 0 and 1, the proportion of blocking coalitions in the set of all coalitions with relative size between α and β, is arbitrarily close to 1/2, as the number of individuals in the economy becomes large. 相似文献

This study explores 134 articles on agility and flexibility research published in the top-nine international business (IB) journals. Accordingly, we critically analyze, map and structure flexibility and agility research in IB, and synthesize the findings into an integrative framework. The paper identifies a wide range of definitions of the concept and a lot of work on its conceptualization. However, studies at the individual and institutional levels of analyses are scarce, and the concept is under-theorized, as there is a dearth of real theoretical underpinnings in this research stream. AbstractRecent studies have started exploring the linkages between organisational ambidexterity (OA) and HRM practices. OA is noted as a critical resource in achieving product, process, and business model innovations. By adopting an inductive case study of a US MNC subsidiary in India, we found empowerment-focused HRM practices were being used for exploration of new ideas and efficiency-focused HRM practices were adopted for the exploitation of the organisation’s existing strengths. Empowerment-focused HRM practices created a culture of openness and risk-taking, which facilitated the creation of an ambidextrous context. Further, ambidextrous learning was moderated by the adoption of a managerial/leadership style that focused on ‘mirroring competencies’ between the parent operation and its subsidiary. HRM practices were aimed at developing behaviours that valued the team-based co-development of graphic processor designs by means of a ‘parallel processing’ approach to product development. Additionally, the HRM practice of offering intrinsic employee rewards and both informal and formal training facilitated OA in delivering product innovation. This study represents a pioneering exploration of multiple levels of analysis (individual, functional, and organisational) for product innovation through the lenses of ambidexterity, innovation, and HRM practices. We consider decision-making under risk in which random events affect the value of the portfolio multiplicatively, rather than additively. In this case, a higher variability in the rate of return not only is associated with a higher risk, a bad property, but also engenders a higher expected return, a good property. As a result, certain expected utility maximizing investors, namely those with the lowest risk aversion, will prefer some portfolios with higher variances in the rate of return over others with lower ones. Project management is a developing area in the service industry, as more unique and customer-tailored services are being developed. This paper presents a benchmarking research study, aimed at improving project planning capabilities in the service industry. Based on data collected from 275 project managers from several industries, including 79 from the service sector, project management strengths and weaknesses within the service industry were investigated. It was found that project managers from the service sector excel in cost and procurement planning processes, compared to project managers from other industries. On the other hand, project managers from the service sector achieve the worst score in quality management processes. Moreover, in the service industry quality management was found to have the most significant impact on project success. Hence, managers in the service sector would benefit from acquiring proper knowledge and techniques relating to quality management in the planning phase of projects. It was also found that the success level of projects performed in the service sector depends most on the qualifications of the project manager. A project manager in the service sector gets very little support from the organisation itself. Support processes should focus on the main weaknesses of the service industry, mainly ‘developing project management procedures’ and ‘increasing the extent of training of their project managers’. A longstanding debate exists in both academic literature and popular culture about whether non-informative marketing tactics
are manipulative. However, given that we tend to believe that some marketing tactics are manipulative and some are not, the
question that marketers, their critics, and consumers need to ask themselves is that of how to actually determine whether
any particular marketing tactic is manipulative and whether a given manipulative tactic is, in fact, immoral. This article
proposes to operationalize criteria that can be used by marketers for making such determinations and attempts to provide some
clarification toward our under- standing of the concept of manipulation and the conditions for the moral acceptability of
manipulative marketing practices. It argues that a marketing tactic is manipulative if it is intended to motivate by undermining
what the marketer believes is his/her audience’s normal decision-making process either by deception or by playing on a vulnerability
that the marketer believes exists in his/her audience’s normal decision-making process. Such a tactic is morally objectionable

In this paper we examine a group formation problem, where heterogeneous individuals partitioned themselves into communities, each choosing its own public project from the given space of feasible projects. The model is that of “horizontal product differentiation” where individuals display distinct preferences over the policy space. We consider the notion of “efficient” configuration that minimizes the total project-related costs and aggregate personalized costs of all individuals, and “sustainable” configurations, those are immune against breakaways by subgroups of individuals. We study a class of optimization problems involving linked recursive preferences in a continuous‐time Brownian setting. Such links can arise when preferences depend directly on the level or volatility of wealth, in principal–agent (optimal compensation) problems with moral hazard, and when the impact of social influences on preferences is modeled via utility (and utility diffusion) externalities. We characterize the necessary first‐order conditions, which are also sufficient under additional conditions ensuring concavity.
