This paper presents empirical evidence on the relationship between diversification and profitability. The data set used in the analysis includes data on 55 U.S. corporations who participated in phase II of the project on Profit Impact of Market Strategy (PIMS).Following upon the pioneering work of Carl Kaysen, complex indices of diversification are developed. Cross sectional regression analyses indicate a statistically significant positive association between measures of corporate diversification and measures of business profitability (return on investment or profit margin on sales). These relationships are insensitive to variations in the treatment of outliers, and do not appear to be accounting artifacts. 相似文献

There has been growing interest in both management and marketing regarding how individuals become identified with organizations
and how organizations attempt to manage these identifications. The authors present a framework built on explicit and implicit
points of convergence in research conducted in both these disciplines. In their review of the management and marketing literatures,
the authors suggest three fundamental mechanisms, or “bases”, for managing organizational identification: relational, behavioral,
and symbolic. Furthermore, the authors argue that how an individual is affiliated with an organization will impact the relative
influence of these identification management bases. The authors conclude by suggesting how management and marketing scholars
can create a theoretical space for future interdisciplinary work Such a change would involve moving away from “employees”
versus “customers” as a prime division between the fields and moving toward a more fine-grained approach that emphasizes the
unique characteristics of individual-organizational relationships.

issues related to workplace attachment and identification, work orientation, and the experience of employees who find work

Michael G. Pratt (mpratt@uiuc.edu) is a James F. Towey Fellow and an associate professor of management at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. His articles have appeared in leading management outlets, includingAdministrative Science Quarterly, theAcademy of Management Journal, theAcademy of Management Review, andResearch in Organizational Behavior. He recently coedited (with Anat Rafaeli) a book titledArtifacts and Organizations: Beyond Mere Symbolism (Lawrence Erlbaum, 2005). His current research examines issues of organizational attachment (e.g., identification and commitment),
multiple identities and meaning, and intuition. Dr. Pratt’s work focuses largely on professionals in both traditional and

The purpose of this article is to determine market orientation’s relative impact on small-business performance, compared to
other influences, in an integrated model using longitudinal data. Contrary to expectations based on the management literature,
the results indicate weak causal relationships between market environment, small-firm structure, and small-firm strategy.
The results further indicate weak influences of these variables, but strong and consistent influences of market orientation,
on various measures of small-firm performance. Contrary to expectations based on business policy literature, relative product
quality and new product success were not significant influences on profitability, perhaps due to the significant influence
of market orientation on these variables. In addition, although increases in growth/share had a significant short-term influence
on increases in profitability, high levels of previous years’ firm growth/share had a negative influence on current profitability.
The previous year’s level of firm coordinating systems and market competitive intensity has a significant impact on the level

Using an innovative dataset built by merging survey and administrative data, we provide new estimates of intergenerational earnings’ inequality between fathers and sons in Italy, extending previous evidence in several directions. We rely on the TSTSLS method to predict fathers’ earnings and compute intergenerational elasticities and imputed rank–rank slopes, trying to reduce estimation biases. Confirming previous evidence, we find that Italy is characterized by a high intergenerational inequality in cross-country comparison. Extending previous analyses, we show that the intergenerational association increases when sons at older ages and multi-annual averages of pseudo-fathers’ and sons’ earnings are considered. We also find that the intergenerational persistence differs across geographical macro-areas and is high also for daughters, especially when family earnings are considered. Furthermore, estimates where possible mediating factors of the parental influence are included among the covariates show that a high intergenerational association persists when sons’ education and occupation are controlled for. 相似文献

This paper investigates the effects of actual and hypothetical changes in league structure on match attendances for English rugby league. An empirical match attendance model is used to generate simulated attendances under various alternative structural regimes.The simulations are used to compare the effects on attendances of having larger and smaller divisions, and of having regionalised lower divisions or divisions whose membership is determined solely by playing quality. A limited form of regionalisation emerges as a positive recommendation. The model is also used to decompose the changes in average attendance, following the 1996 reorganisation, into components attributable to the change of structure, changes in team performance, and other factors. 相似文献

selection theory is perceived across several disciplines. When we focus on the zone of agreement among the commentators, Landa’s
article provides an important example of convergent cultural evolution. When we focus on the zone of disagreement, we find
a snapshot of the current status of the group selection controversy that goes beyond narrow scientific issues and requires
a ‘truth and reconciliation’ process to resolve, as discussed in my series of blogs titled “Truth and Reconciliation for Group
Selection” (Wilson , 2009) and briefly summarized here.

The objective of this paper is to carry out a counterfactual analysis of the impact of alternative exchange rate regimes on the volatility of the nominal effective exchange rate (NEER) and the bilateral rate against the US dollar for nine East Asian countries after the Asian financial crisis. Our hypothetical regimes include a unilateral basket peg (UBP), a common basket peg (CBP) and a hard peg against the dollar. We find that a UBP would minimise effective exchange rate volatility for all countries and provides the highest regime gains compared to actual. Although the gains for a CBP are always less than those for a UBP, the absolute differences between the two regimes appear to be small. In terms of the bilateral relationship against the dollar, the gains from a UBP or CBP could be quite significant for the non‐dollar peggers since a fall in effective instability would be accompanied by a fall in bilateral instability. 相似文献

Laser scanning is a very efficient way to generate realistic, high-resolution digital models of 3-D geological outcrops. This paper discusses the methodologies involved in the creation and analysis of virtual outcrops, based on laser scanner data. The visualisation of the laser scanner data as a photorealistic 3-D object is described. Geological features picked out on the virtual outcrop (e.g. fractures, faults or bedding planes) can be extrapolated outward, into space, and inward, into the subsurface, using tension surfaces. 相似文献

Most models of international trade assume extremes of factor mobility between productive uses. From perfectly mobile factors in the Heckscher–Ohlin model, to fixed capital and mobile labor in the Ricardo–Viner–Jones model, factors are assumed to move costlessly or not at all. In reality, factors are neither perfectly mobile nor fixed. This paper considers costs of reallocating factors between industries, deriving a measure of adjustment costs due to factor specificity in a two‐period model of a firm's input allocation decision. The degrees of specificity for labor and capital are then estimated based on data for 15 industries in 16 countries covering eight years. Estimating a system of nonlinear first‐order conditions using a three‐stage least squares technique, I find that recently reallocated factors are indeed less productive. Labor is 14% less productive in the period after reallocation, while capital productivity falls by 43%. Thereafter, capital, unlike labor, moves quickly toward full productivity. 相似文献
